More than a decade after Boy Meets World ended its seven-season run on ABC, its sibling the Disney Channel is eying a sequel series. The channel has closed a deal with Boy Meets World co-creator/executive produced Michael Jacobs for the project, titled Girl Meets World, which is in early stages of development. It centers on the preteen daughter of Cory (Ben Savage) and Topanga (Danielle Fishel), who married on the original series, and tells the story from her point of view. According to TVLine, which broke the news, Disney Channel is trying to get Savage and Fishel to reprise their roles.
Rebooting old series by focusing on the offspring of characters from the original show has become popular recently with TNT’s Dallas and two comedies in development for next season, CBS’ Beverly Hills Cop, centered on the son of Axel Foley, and The Brady Bunch, about the son of Bobby Brady.

This is actually a great idea and it will be a hit show. But it only works if they get Ben and Danielle without them it’s worthless. They also need me to be the girl’s teacher.
Feeeeeneyyyyyy!
I used to love this show I’m so glad they’re bringing it back. My only concern is that this show would probably fit better on Abc Family or Abc. Disney Channel only appeals to kids and they are not going to know about Boy Meets World. The original also appealed to teens in the later seasons anyways.
Disney has not had good programming since Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire.
so true bro, Disney channel has gone down hill since like 2005, no more great tv original movies either…
Dude, you nailed it! All the originals from Underwraps, Get a Clue, Twitches and so many more that were a Disney Friday night staple in my childhood and early teens! The shows these days are rubbish!
Gravity Falls.
Finally our childhood is coming back! At least one old Disney Channel is back! I’m thrilled!!! I wanted part of my childhood back and wishes can come true.
Great idea! Such a huge fan of BMW! My kids watch it before school in the morning on ABC Family. I think this would better fit for ABC Family. Could be paired with Melissa and Joey! A blast from the 90′s past! I hope in the development process this gets transferred to ABC Family!
BMW was my absolute favorite show growing up. And actually I did discover it through the Disney Channel syndication of it so I can see why it would appear on that network. I just hope it’s not TOO kiddie (BMW is still enjoyable even now that I’m adult) and I also hope it’s not too girl-centric (BMW was appealing to both genders I think). And yeah Savage and Fishel have to reprise or this is worthless.
Also Rider Strong would have to at least have a small role on the show since any scenario where Shawn and Cory didn’t stay friends just wouldn’t make any sense.
Forget that. Didn’t ABC already start trying to get TGIF back with Last Man Standing and Malibu Country? Put this show on ABC where they’ll have freedom to cross boundaries that disney channel won’t. Disney channel didn’t even show certain episodes of Boy Meets World in repeats just for this very reason. I don’t want a sugar coated BMW, give me the real deal.
Awesome news, made my day! U have to get back Ben and Danielle to reprise their parts. I do wish this would be transferred to ABC, but hey, at least some form of the awesome 90′s show I watched is coming back. Gotta make it appealing to both genders though Disney. Also: get Shawn and Mr. Feeney back…thanks!
Michael Jacobs is back, yay.
Worried Disney could ruin original canon :/
BOY MEETS WORLD had itself a strange run. It took many different forms. While the main cast stayed (mostly) the same, the characters and tone of the show changed dramatically through the years. It began as almost a WONDER YEARS-Light, wherein the stories were grounded and real from a 6th grader’s POV. There was a true sweetness and heart to it. Then they jumped to middle school, and it was more focused on the kids they encountered there and Cory’s friend Shawn being taken in by the cool, Fonzie-like teacher Nick Turner. Season later it was (for the third time) revamped wherein Turner disappeared, the parents were almost written out of the show, and it was about high school hi-jinx. As well, brother Eric got dumbed down in a weird way, from being a normal, good-looking slacker to mentally retarded and cartoonish. Soon the show dove into new territory. It abandoned storylines out of the blue (Turner, Minkus, Parents) and randomly everyone was the same age going to college. Eric attended school with Cory and Shawn, sister Morgan (throughout the seasons) existed, then didn’t exist, then did again with a new actress, then the parents had a new kid though it wasn’t a major storyline, and throughout it all their ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER, MR. FEENEY, went to middle school, high school, and then college with them. By college the show was only about the kids: Shawn and his girlfriend, Cory and Topanga, and Eric and a rotating group of his roommates. By this point, Eric was outlandish and surreal almost, and everyone else was just played for laughs. The show was a completely different beast than it’s original incarnation. Weird stuff. But that being said, as a result of the show’s inability to ever find itself, it can again be whatever it wants. This should work, be nostalgic, and I look forward to it.
What ever happened to me? I was on the show the first season then they forgot about me and they fired me. Please bring me back for this new series. Thank you Mr. Jacobs. Your long lost pal,
Don’t worry Minkus, I hear there was an OK future for you in the town of Tree Hill, NC. You’ll be fine if you stay away from the pretentious storylines.
Mr. Feeny is 85 years old. Even in this economy he would be retired. It would be great to have him on the show, but too sad if he died half way through the series run.
William Daniels is currently doing a recurring guest role on Grey’s Anatomy. I think he could come in for a guest role a few times and would be more than happy to. He’s never had anything but nice things to say about the BMW cast & crew.
at least with the same producer it has the possibility or being similar, but without same characters they might as well forget it
How about just run Boy Meets World again from the beginning?
They already do run the original series on MTV 2 on the afternoons.
And every morning at 7am and 7:30am on ABC Family.
Boy Meets World series is on from 7:00 a.m. till 9:30 a.m.on ABC Family Monday thru Friday.
This is great news. I have cuch fond memories of this show from when I was in my early teens. And maybe Fred Savage could direct a few episodes. He’s proven himself a first-rate sitcom director. Agree with commenter Matthews about how inconsistent (and sometimes sloppy) the show could be. But I still think this is a great idea, especially with solid, passionate writers behind it, and a strong cast.
Yessss!!! Hope it happens
Uh, yeah, Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel are available.
Let’s hope this doesn’t turn into another “The New Leave it The Beaver”/”Still The Beaver”.
Put this on ABC next fall.
TGIF IS BACK!
I disagree. I think the current Disney Channel audience will watch it and enjoy it as a brand new show while you also have the awesome legacy of the original show drawing in the older crowd with kids of their own. It’s genius I think!
In a world where Reboots seem to be the norm these days, It kinda doesn’t & does surprise me that BMW would have some sort of continuation. Having said that, this CAN work if a number of Core elements from the show were used properly. Having Ben & Danielle come back is a deal-breaking given, because it CAN’T be a show about Cory & Topanga’s Daughter WITHOUT them (It’s just common sense, but then again, this is Hollywood).
In order for the show to TRULY work, the following should happen:
1. Have the show air on “ABC Family” instead of the “Disney Channel”. “Family” already airs BMW reruns in the morning–MTV2 not withstanding–Having the Sequel there in Prime Time is a No Brainer.
2A. Have as much of the original CREW (Not necessarily cast) there as possible. I’m sure Michael Jacobs can get in touch with Bob Tischler, Jeff Menell & Jeff McCracken, (IMO, the people who turned the show Around after the awkward first few seasons) and have them try to re-create what made BMW great for GMW. At the same time…
2B. DO NOT turn GMW into what BMW turned into in the later years when it tried to mix episodes of bittersweet drama with the odd dose of slapsticky comic relief, The show Needs to establish its OWN identity. For instance, if this is about Cory’s Daughter, you DON’T HAVE TO have a Female “Shawn Hunter” to be her BFF. Nor do you need her to have a Boyfriend that’s a lot like Topanga (Especially in the way That character “Evolved” over the years). It’s OK to be different & pull things out of left field (But not too far out of Left).
3. The show is called “Girl Meets World”, meaning that while the show does exist in its own world, it doesn’t mean that they CAN’T acknowledge the world it came from–In other words, try to Limit the number of inevitable cast appearances from the “Old” show so that the “New” show can grow (It’s working for “Dallas”, it can work here). Besides, I think Will Fridele (“Eric Matthews”) is happier being off-camera doing voiceover work anyway.
There are a number of Other things that need to be done in order for this show to go without a hitch, but those are the CORE 3 & 1/2 things that must be paid special attention in order for the show to be a success.
I’m Happy they are doing a sequel, but worried it centers around a girl. It’s a great idea, but girl roles can be tricky, especially with shows today. If it is done, I hope they bring back Danielle and Ben, as well as appearances with fenny, definitely Shawn and Eric, as well as other. Mostly, I hope they can rebuild a great new cast and characters that are great as the original. I also hope the show somewhat stays true to it’s original and has the ability to become an original itself.
