A California filmmaker and six others said to be behind the anti-Islam film Innocence Of Muslims have been sentenced to death in absentia by an Egyptian court. “The seven accused persons were convicted of insulting the Islamic religion through participating in producing and offering a movie that insults Islam and its prophet,” Egyptian Judge Saif al-Nasr Soliman said today, according to broadcast and wire service reports. The film, which ridiculed the Prophet Muhammad, sparked rioting, violence and deaths in 30 countries in the Mideast, Europe and Asia since it was released in September. Earlier this month, filmmaker Mark Basseley Youssef (aka Nakoula Basseley Nakoula) was sentenced to a year in prison in California for violating the terms of his probation stemming from a 2010 bank fraud conviction.

Will the Middle East EVER emerge from the 18th century? (Rhetorical)
18th? You mean 8th, don’t you?
the 8th? how about year zero?
Are these people on the same planet as the rest of us!?!”Sentenced to death”? For making a film-HELLO? What the hell is wrong with these people!? They feel their prophet is insulted in a film and their reaction-let’s kill them! Correct me if I’m wrong, but, that doesn’t sound very religious to me! The atrocities done by these people in the name of religion NEVER ceases to amaze me! They truly are a bunch of sickos!
might be a stupid question, but are these people actually held captive and will they actually be killed, or was it a trail to sentence them, even though they aren’t in custody?
See: “in absentia”
Where are all the free speech advocates?
Everyone is notoriously silent….
Yep – very interesting. Where was the ACLU when this filmmaker was dragged off to jail? I don’t agree with his movie’s message, but . . . . .it starting to look the director wasn’t so far off base. In a sad way, this whole crazy story has ‘proved’ his point about Islam better than his movie ever could.
As a Christian I used to be more sympathetic to the Muslims, but now . . . . is their faith so weak it can’t handle a stupid three mintue movie? This reaction doesn’t make sense.
First of all, can we please stop referring to Nakoula Basseley as a “filmmaker”? He isn’t. Not even close. His pathetic video is so poorly slapped together that it’s a miracle of a total lack of self-respect of Mr. Nakoula for himself to even upload it and show anywhere in public.
Second, on the other hand, the response of the Arab world actually proves that Nakoula has a point, as sad as it may be. The Muslims have shown over and over their intolerance for any criticism what-so-ever. From Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses to this latest example of death sentences on people for simply expressing their opinion. The fact that this is even happening in the 21st Century is a disgrace.
Such sweet irony. This guy makes an F level home movie that depicts Islam as pure evil and violence and the Muslims trip over themselves to prove him exactly right.
Egypt may not have freedom of speech, but the USA does. He should be punished for violating his probation but nothing more.
Is it a matter of convenience to blame a film or its maker(s) for the unlawful violence, rioting and deaths in those 30 countries? It may be more expedient to blame him rather than hold those rioters and murderers accountable for THEIR OWN ACTIONS, but expediency is not the basis of justice!
