SUNDAY 7 AM, 6TH UPDATE (Top Ten grosses below): Total moviegoing this weekend is $138.3M,
which is a healthy +21% from last year. The good news is that as Hurricane Sandy recovery continued, Saturday became a big attendance day. Going into this weekend, less than 100 movie theaters on the East Coast remained off the grid on Friday. But that number went down as the power came on. The even better news was that NYC biz in particular was very strong – despite continuing transportation problems but because of cabin fever. ”Clearly, folks need and have an escape valve from the misery of Sandy – namely the movies,” one top distribution exec tells me.
Overall weekend domestic box office was led by Disney’s well-reviewed 3D blockbuster Wreck-It Ralph (playing in 3,752 theaters) whose gross went up a huge +58% from Friday to Saturday for an expected $50.0M through Sunday. It’s the biggest non-holiday opening for a Disney Animation Studios
title. Clearly here’s a brand new original franchise for the Mouse House. This action toon went into Friday accounting for 20% of all online ticket sales at Fandango and MovieTickets. Yet there was some flopsweat by Disney not just because of the storm variable but because family tracking has been unreliable of late. (Remember Frankenweenie, anyone?) “I think they’re going to get enough teens to supplement the family audience and pop a real number,” a rival studio exec told me ahead of time. Pic did. Audiences gave Wreck-It Ralph an ‘A’ Cinemascore which should bode well for positive word of mouth and playability through the Thanksgiving holiday as there is little family competition in the marketplace until then. The toon infused from 30-plus years of video game history so target audience wasn’t just kids but also adults and game enthusiasts as well as males and females. (I always think the movie industry doesn’t understand how many gals play video games…) Fix-It Felix Jr classic-style game consoles toured the country, with stops at Comic-Con, gamer-focused events like Classic Gaming Expo and PAX Prime, as well as colleges, family events, Disney Parks, etc. The trailer debuted at E3 in June while the film itself had a strong presence at Comic-Con in July, including a Hall H panel with director Rich Moore and voice cast John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman. As for its marketing campaign, Wreck-It Ralph had a huge Olympic integration, plus promotional partnerships with Subway, Nesquik, Gamefly, Netgear, Costco, and Lego. Global press junket in mid-October featured immersive experiences in the game’s worlds, followed by a special gaming press day in San Francisco in conjunction with Sega, Disney Mobile and Activision. The world premiere was held at the El Capitan Theatre on October 29. For animation fans and cinephiles, toon is playing in theaters with Paperman, a black-and-white 3D short film that features an innovative new hybrid of hand-drawn and CG animation.
Of course the Disney family fare swamped this weekend’s other newcomers which are debuting in only 1/2 as many theaters. But Paramount’s well-reviewed Flight (1,900 locations) enjoyed a +31% bump from Friday to Saturday and opened #2 with a surprise $25M this weekend. That’s enormous considering its medium theater count. Just think how many stars can’t even open pics to
$20M with 3,000+ theaters. But Denzel Washington has a very loyal adult fanbase, and the pic from credited screenwriter John Gatins had good reviews despite (or because of) a bleak back half. Expectedly, movie is very soft with teens. But it received an ’A-’ CinemaScore which will help keep it overperforming tracking and stirring Oscar buzz. It’s certainly been a while since director Robert Zemeckis had a hit like this. Even better for Paramount, which has only released one live action pic since May (Paranormal Activity 4), is the fact that Flight cost only $31M. “That was the ground rule that everyone bought into.” Paramount gave it a release pattern similar to its 2010′s The Fighter which had a similar budget, dark story and awards chatter. As for marketing, Paramount launched the Flight trailer in June on Prometheus. “Our strategy was to aim our efforts at sophisticated moviegoers and have a strong push for men and African Americans,” a studio exec explains to me. Flight campaign kicked off for all four presidential debates’ TV coverage. That early awareness stunt led to an exclusive promotion on CBS. A heavy African-American push was made on BET, VH1 and urban radio) as well as VH1′s Basketball Wives whose reality cast screened the film and waxed enthusiastically about Denzel in a promotional spot. Of course there were big sports buys and lots of media. Flight had its world premiere Closing Night of the New York Film Festival on October 14th. Then Paramount and EPIX hosted an encore presentation in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles with audiences on the West Coast participating in a Q&A with Zemeckis, Washington, Don Cheadle, and John Goodman. Denzel appeared on Letterman, and Zemeckis on Fallon, for the first time those shows ever broadcast without an audience. Zemeckis also traveled the festival circuit (Chicago International Film Festival, Philadelphia Film Festival). Online, Paramount utilized a Twitter Promoted Trend, reaching 39M unique users in one day then added heavy African American targeting.
With just a 15% drop in its 4th weekend, Ben Afflecks Oscar-buzzed Argo from Warner Bros was mixing it up for #3 and #4 with Universal’s The Man With The Iron Fists (1,868 theaters) whose meh reviews helped sink its debut to a disappointing $8.2M this weekend. But that’s a more optimistic number than other studios’ $7.6M. Pic ended up with only a ‘C+’ CinemaScore which hurt word of mouth: Saturday’s gross was flat from Friday’s. Featuring MMA personality Cung Le,
Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu and marking the directorial debut of RZA, he co-wrote with Eli Roth who also produced. But, c’mon, how many times have we seen hip hop artists crash and burn on their big screen projects? But not for lack of trying. ‘Presented by’ Quentin Tarantino, he was the film’s ‘creative godfather’ and marketed the fighting pic directly to the UFC homepage right in the wheelhouse of its target demo. Apparently, that’s a tiny number. Tracking was strongest with older males and ethnic moviegoers; exit polling showed the audience was 64% male vs. 36% female, and 47% aged 30 years and older vs. 53% under age 30. But grosses were on the low range of expectations. Good thing the pic cost only $15M. Universal explains it gave RZA a chance based on his lifelong kung fu fascination after he served as an on-set apprentice to several filmmakers over the years. The studio calls it “a low-risk project that is more a labor of love for an arriving new film artist than a potential big moneymaker for the studio.” Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman produced. On November 12th, Universal will begin rolling out the film out internationally where it might perform better. The trailer launched with Uni’s Savages in July. The TV campaign kicked off with sponsorships of both the BET Hip Hop Awards and WWE star Dave Bautista’s MMA debut. Promos ran with the release of the new “Assassin’s Creed” video game last Monday. Global street artists created outdoor tearaway posters. The Black Keys collaborated with RZA on “The Baddest Man Alive” soundtrack song and the music video featured movie scenes. RZA visited 10 cities on an extensive PA tour where he performed with fellow members of the Wu Tang Clan and other hip-hop artists. Premieres were hosted in LA and NY. Hispanic outreach included an original Spanish-dub viral video while RZA did press at the Hispanic-owed Martial Arts History Museum in Burbank. African-American digital outreach placed RZA on Snoop Dogg’s YouTube channel. Partnerships with Machinima, Global Grind, UFC, IGN and Spotify created online awareness. An animated prequel was created by artist Eric Calderon and voiced by RZA.
The Wachowskis’ $100M-budget holdover Cloud Atlas distributed by Warner Bros remains a complete flop.

Iron Fists is a stinker. Lousy director, lousy script. I wonder if Tarantino will ever stop “presenting” all that crap for his buds.
Haha. The presenting bit made me ‘LOL’.
CG Animation continues to be on fire! It is the best, most consistent business to be in.
Both the TV biz and Feature Animation are the two golden geese of the entertainment industry right now. From a quality perspective, they’re better than ever. And, from an audience perspective, they just can’t get enough.
Raise your hand if you watched THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS and had no idea what was going on for 90% of the running time.
The press screening I was at was filled with constant laughter.
A key concern with Wreck-It Ralph is whether the subject matter will put off girls, similar to how boys were put off by The Princess and the Frog.
That said, it may be counteracted by the subject matter appealing to broader male demographics who wouldn’t usually be interested in watching a Disney film. This is one of the reasons Toy Story was such a big success.
I’m a girl. When I saw it had Zangief, I said I’M IN! Then again I’m an 80s/90s child who grew up gaming with an older bro….
Some day people will come to understand that nearly half of all people who play video games are women. (47% according to research published by the Entertainment Software Association in August of this year.)
But today is not that day.
I dont believe that number, in my experience it’s 10 to one boys.
Agreed. Also not believing that number.
Just came out of a viewing and have got to say that it’s an awesome flick for girls.
Silverman does an outstanding job as the female co-lead and if I had a daughter, I’d definitely want her to see it.
@Oliver You clearly haven’t seen the actual movie. Its meant for both boys and girls.
@mileshigh So? It’s irrelevant if he’s seen the movie or not because his comment deals with the fact that it might appeal more to boys and less girls will want to see it. If the marketing doesn’t appeal to girls they don’t see the movie, so his comment is correct.
Translation: “Deflect! Deflect! Deflect!”
din’t think flight is going to take off. they are cheating the marketing because they have to (no one will really want to see it if they sold it straight) but they aren’t doing it well. reviews seem to be there but seem to come with caveats. not really the movie you want as an escape.
God no, it’s “Leaving Las Vegas” with Denzel playing Nic Cage’s part. Hard, hard film to watch.
It was tracking like shit, but it’s obvious Today was a total win for Wreck it Ralph.
Tracking like shit? I think you better check your sources, Wreck-It Ralph was always expected to be a major hit and tracking was very high.
now that the power has been somewhat restored to downtown NYC..I wouldn’t be surprised to see if Clearview Chelsea and the Un Square theaters try to get up and running tomorrow..power was restored around 6 pm ET.
Excellent for ‘Flight’, with a 30M budget and low theater count, if that 8M holds, it will have a 10K+ PTA. IF the studio opts to expand it in the next few weeks and the ‘very dark story in the back half’ won’t ruin WOM, it could be another quality 100M hit. Too bad they didn’t go with a 3000+ OW, Skyfall and Lincoln will be stiff competition in the next two weeks, with a more appropriate wide release it could have made considerably more before those films.
That’s what comes of a film that the studio is giving up a huge amount of the rear of it.
Agree that SKYFALL is going to wipe all out next week. Won’t hit $100M, my guess is $75 domestic.
I thought Denzel was supposed to be a big star. If Flight cost only 30mil, what’s Denzel’s take? 5-6mil?
Apparently, you’ve never heard of the back end. Amateur hour.
You’re an idiot.
Many big stars not take less money up front and op for a backend deal. If they really believe in the film then they don’t take there usual pay. Besides with the economy unless you are talking one of the big franchises.. most stars are not making those 10s of millions. Studios can’t afford that. And if the movie is not a reasonable money maker. Those salaries are like flushing away funds.
If the movie does well, Denzel will make his money.
Denzel always gets his $20m + gross for commercial fare, but actors will do a movie that has Oscar potential for nothing. He’s worth $400m personally, so he doesn’t need the money and he is a huge movie star. One of the most consistent box office earners.
Denzel and Bob Z both worked for scale. They will be paid from the profits and they will both do very well on this it’s a great movie.
I just saw it and thought it was the best Bob Z. film in a while. Denzel is always most interesting when he’s at his smarmiest and this film surprised me at how smarmy he got. Good cast all around, actually.
They’ll make a big chunk a’ change off of this.
Wreck-It Ralph 55M this weekend. And prob a sequel.
For sure we already have the script. The sequel will be titled Suck-it-Ralph and it’s going to be a gay romance between Wreck it Ralph and Fix it Felix.
LOL
I just came from seeing Wreck it Ralph, and have to say it was the best animated film I have seen in years! Bravo Disney Animation!!!
Real stars get a lot more upfront. I guess Denzel is not that popular after all. Few of his movies make more abroad than domestic. Safe House was his biggest hit and it never even reached 150mil. He did not deserve an Oscar for Training Day.
troll.
Denzel definitely a real star. A LOT of people paid attention to ‘Magic Mike’ and how it shook out.
Since The Hurricane in ’99, the guy has done sixteen features – at least eleven were bonafide hits, and the others weren’t bombs, just mild grossers.
And it’s not like he’s doing these four-quadrant crowd pleasers, so obviously he doesn’t have that Will Smith or Johnny Depp list of mega-grossers.
He does adult movies. Adult movies aren’t made to gross $300-million.
Thank you for telling it like it is. This man couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag, and individually, has brought the ‘act’ of mugging to new heights.
Not to mention how far his head is up his ass…..
Saw Flight tonight. Fantastic movie and Denzel gets another Oscar nom.
The hater agrees with the troll.
At Amused – You are complete and utter idiot… Shut the fuck up dumbshit. You know not what you are saying. Any Oscar winning actor will tell you Denzel is one of the greatest actors ever.
I was actually surprised by how geared towards young girls it was, to the point where it almost seemed like false advertising. But the film was a lot of fun and surprisingly touching.
@Amused, you’re a hater!!
This is a great opening (if these early numbers pan out) for Flight, especially since it was only in 2000 theaters. It shows Washington’s box office prowless. Anyone trying to spin these numbers as bad must also think that Argo had a terrible opening.
Great opening for Ralph as well.
Man with the Iron Fists is so bad, it’s alarming. Crowd actually booed the film at the end, which is something I’ve rarely seen.
WOM is going to be toxic.
Saw Flight tonight. Yeah, the subject matter was dark, but so what? Not everything has to be a feel-good movie. I am 41 and was one of the younger ones in a packed theater, and the movie received some good applause at the end. That was the second mature movie I have seen in a month, which is a nice change from the usual. Argo, of course, was the other. Here’s hoping Lincoln is as good as it looks.
More illiterates than usual on the board this evening. Some basic linguistic syntax will serve you well, my friends.
After watching Flight, I still don’t understand why Paramount was so bearish on the film’s commercial prospects. Granted, the characters’ moralities are totally different from those depicted in the previews, but the formulaic story should play well with the complacent adult demo. It’s pretty mediocre, by the way.
I think you’re made of sunshine!
For those bashing THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS…Once you establish and become the mastermind behind one of the most influential and interesting groups in the history of rap music…and then try your hand in a completely different medium and perhaps come up short on your first try….then you may bash The RZA…but I will continue to be interested in anything he puts his hands on creatively, because he is, indeed, a great artist, and pretty much just awesome.
You don’t have to tell me, I loved NWA.
It’s not his fault. The blame goes entirely on Eli Roth. RZA is awesome at what he does. Roth is a hack.
If the movie sucks, it sucks. There’s no crying in baseball.
LMFAO at @Ryan S
@Bryan The ads feature the Sarah Silverman character and the poster has both her and Jane Lynch. When word of mouth gets out about how much more girly it is, ‘Ralph’ will do very well. They should’ve shown more scenes in the ads in the Candyland type game. A good majority of the movie takes place there.
If you think safe house is denz best movie you are blind
These numbers are very impressive for Flight and for those wondering about Denzel’s pay – he got a reduced front end for this movie.
@Ryan….Umm RZA is with the WuTangClan…
Um, no. You’re thinking of GZA.
Ummmm, no Wu Tang Clan. @Ryan are you on crack? GZA and RZA are cousins along with ODB, that helped form The Wu.
I think Ryan was kidding.
Hotel Transylvania still going strong.
I hope Jay Pharoh busts out his Denzel tonight for a Flight parody on SNL tonight.
Rich Moore worked alongside amazing talents like Brad Bird in the early years of the Simpsons and was considered by all to be an unquestioned peer to amazing talents like Brad Bird. He married computer animation to Matt Groening’s drawing style flawlessly in creating the look and feel of Futurama. Now, after waiting way too long, Hollywood finally gave Rich a feature, and there you see it – 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and a $50 million opening weekend. Do not wait so long to give Rich another movie, Hollywood!
I don’t give him quite so much credit as you do in “creating the look and feel of Futurama” (there are a lot of people who contributed to that), but Rich Moore–and everyone at Rough Draft Studios–is fantastic; I’m glad to see him get the chance to direct this movie, and I knew it would be a home run.
LMFAO amused!!! Check again the statistics: http://boxofficemojo.com/people/chart/?id=denzelwashington.htm
Actually his record is impressive for three factors:
1. He’s in his 50s. and still he has BO power. He gains 3.5 dollars for every dollar you paid him.
2. Since 1998, none of his films flopped. Even when the film wasn’t a bonafire hit, it made money.
3. Most of his films are adult movies. Like Pvt. Duke said before: The Adult movies aren’t made to gross $300 – millions. Those times are over now. So when an adult movie with low costs and good word of mouth made $100 millions is excellent
Truthteller – Maybe for you, because Denzel won two Oscars, two Golden Globes, a Silver Bear at Berlinale, a competitive Tony Award and respect for thespians like Robert DeNiro, Sean Penn and others.
They are just haters and trolls looking to stir the pot. I can understand a difference of opinion over Denzel’s acting style, but it boggles the mind when some dim-witted, knee-jerk contrarian can’t admit that he’s reliably bankable. The same kinds of comments cropped up when “Safe House” came out.
