Fox has cut the 13-episode midseason order to new single-camera comedy The Goodwin Games to 7 episodes. The series will wrap production today when it finishes filming Episode 6 to fulfill its reduced pickup of six episodes plus the pilot. Fox already ordered supersized 24-episode seasons of Raising Hope, New Girl and freshman The Mindy Project as well as 19 episodes of new fall comedy Ben And Kate. The reduced order for Goodwin Games, which will likely alternate with Ben And Kate, will ensure 24-26 originals for each half-hour time period of Fox’s fledgeling Tuesday comedy block this season (unless the network opts for more trimming of current orders).
Goodwin Games, from the How I Met Your Mother trio of Carter Bays, Craig Thomas and Chris Harris and 20th TV, revolves around the three Goodwin siblings (Becki Newton, Scott Foley, T.J. Miller) who reconnect after the death of their father when he leaves them his fortune — but only if they agree to his terms. The project underwent casting changes after the pilot, with Miller replacing Jake Lacy and Kat Foster replacing Felisha Terrell.

This was one of the best pilots this year. Sweet, funny, smart. Huge mistake, Fox.
Heard the pilot was great, but that everything else has been resoundingly terrible. Not surprised to hear this, but it’s not fun for the crew.
The comment above must have been written by someone from Fox network, which has tried to sabotage this show since picking it up, due to it not being part of the “New Girl Brand.” (Read, clones like Ben and Kate.) Watch it if and when it actually airs. This show would have been a departure from Fox’s line-up, in the best way possible. Genuinely smart, funny and sweet.
Have to wonder where you “heard” this, because it’s false. If Fox actually airs it, I suspect people will see what the crew you’re pretending to sympathize with (which I was on) saw in the show — it wasn’t just another job, it was a job we were proud of on a daily basis. Really funny, sweet and above all smart work. Maybe smart was its downfall.
Notice how everyone here says how the show is soooo sweet, funny and smart. You’re not kidding anyone, wouldn’t be the first time a staff member boosts his show on here.
Hahaha, someone just told me about this. I wasn’t trying to hide that I worked on crew, I said that I did! It was not my show, nor am I a guy. Just a lady who lost a job I really loved on a sweet show I believed in, and I said it on here. What’s wrong with that?
You worked on a TV show. They get canceled all the time, regardless of how much the crew liked each other or how well people got along. It sucks, but it happens.
I completely agree w/ OP. Actually my favorite half-hour of all the pilots. I hope they give it a chance, it is absolutely one of the smartest, funniest and clever shows out there. Hoping for a viewing miracle – it really deserves a chance.
Unless they air it after American Idol, there’s no way this show will do any better than what Mindy and Ben and Kate are doing.
Must agree with you M.H. Have watched the Goodwin Games pilot multiple times already and laugh every time. It’s fantastic from start to finish. Big mistake.
Cutting it now seems almost wrong. Like ‘hey guys the episode you’re shooting right now is the last one’ its not going to have a real finale (and it seems like a show that would need one) and it makes Ben and Kate look like a priority when it shouldn’t be.
I would like to know when Client list is coming back
client list is already back in production on ep 2
So let me get this straight. A show that network brass believed in, by the creators of HIMYM, gets canned after 6 in what seems like a burn off. Now, this show could be awful, I have no idea…but how much worse could a show be than Mindy, Ben and Kate, and the extremely mediocre New Girl. I’m no writer, but it seems that high school kids could write better than the current shows that air…If I were a consultant to Fox, I would first get rid of the comedy executives, and then get rid of the whole tuesday block. Finally, when you set the bar low by claiming New Girl as a huge superhit, then you end up with junk. Call New Girl what it is — extremely average, be honest with yourselves, and maybe you can get some programming that is better. In all of this, I feel bad for the crew as well.
FOX is killing there new shows before they even premiere. The Mindy project was off the schedule for a month..Mob Doctor had no push from the network from the very start and now cutting an episode order for a show that will have no real chance. FOX better hope The Following hits but I have my doubts.
When I think of television comedy, I think of FOX!
FOX News, that is.
Ben & Kate will be canceled because it’s awful. Goodwin is so much better-it should be given a chance because it’s a show people will actually watch week to week.
I know absolutely nothing about this show, but it’s always nice to see FOX punch themselves in the balls! Keep programming, weaklings!
How shocking, a stupid decision from the good people who think we like The New Girl and Ben & Kate and Mindy.
Fox Execs are failed writers who have nothing but disdain for real writers. They do nothing but stifle creativity. Was really looking forward to watching this show.
Can this be picked up by another network or cable? I want to watch this.
I like Ben and Kate, but would gladly have The Mindy Project, New Girl, or any of Seth MacFarlane’s crap be cancelled to let The Goodwin Games succeed. In fact, this looks better than Ben and Kate. If only I was a network executive…
Fox buys a pitch, doesn’t trust their own instincts, notes it to death and cancels it before it airs. What a goddam travesty.
This is really a shame. Not many people feel good about what is going on over there at Fox. Kevin Reilly probably won’t be working in Hollywood in 2 years.
I just hope Kyle Killen doesn’t sell another show to a network. The man is too smart for Network TV… oh wait he already did. Damn! #whykylewhy #notrelevanttothisconversation #networktvisdead
This was a gimmick idea. The children compete in a different game every week to win their deceased father’s inheritance. Great pitch for a movie, but do we really want to watch 120 episodes of them playing Twister and Hungry, Hungry Hippos? I think 7 episodes is the exact number of episodes that an audience will say, “So wait, that’s it?” and move on.
I’m thrilled the cast and crew are posting their support here, but the reality is that this idea was unsustainable from the start.
you’re a moron…and I’m not cast or crew!
The game was threaded through the show, it wasn’t the focus of it. It was filled with great characters that you’d actually want to watch. Unfortunately, since it didn’t fit Fox’s idiotic idiot girl brand, it looks like America is gonna miss out on a truly original, hugely funny show that would keep them coming back week after week. This decision isn’t surprising coming from the people that think anyone in their right mind wants to watch Ben and Kate or Mindy.
WTF? Becki Newton and Scott Foley were incredible together.
Hi Kevin!
HA. So true.
Good try, D. But I think you are missing the point of the comments section. Who said it was cast and crew??
The only comedy at FOX right now is the joy of laughing at their unbelievably dumb decisions.
I have been at Fox for a while now and I am so disheartened by this decision. This show is better than any other comedy we have on the air. The creatives jumped through hoops to address asinine notes. If I have to hear another one of my colleagues say, “We need characters to be good at their jobs” or “We don’t want any conflict between characters” or “Less game” on a show that’s called The Goodwin _Games_, I will lose my mind. I am embarrassed on behalf of the network.
The only reason Ben And Kate remains on the air is that we are all afraid of Chernin.
This is just a shame. I’ll never understand why you buy a show, shoot a bunch of episodes and then kill it before it sees the light of day. There is so much crap on TV, I have a hard time believing Goodwin Games was that much worse than other shows. How I Met Your Mother is a great show, I was really looking forward to seeing this.
I don’t make my living watching tv, I make my living making tv. Last year I was on “New Girl”, this year I was on “The Goodwin Games”. The only way I can honestly put this is that “The Goodwin Games” was better in every way. Yes, there are some good people on “New Girl” but on “The Goodwin Games” there are NO horrible people. Can’t say that about “New Girl”.
