Fox Searchlight has acquired the life rights to Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle along with rights to the UK musical I Dreamed A Dream that’s based on her story. The plan is to combine the two to develop a re-imagined filmed version of the musical. Lucas Webb, who pursued the project for Searchlight out of London, tells me the aspiration is to do “a sensitive and honest biopic infused with music.” It’s early stages and no director or screenwriter has been attached, but the project is “front and center,” says Webb.
Boyle’s Britain’s Got Talent audition in 2009, singing the Les Misérables lament I Dreamed A Dream, catapulted her to overnight Internet stardom. Her first album that same year became the best-selling UK debut record of all time. A jukebox musical, I Dreamed A Dream is produced by Michael Harrison and spans Boyle’s life from infancy in a working class town in northern Scotland through to how she learned to deal with the onset of sudden international fame. I Dreamed A Dream started its regional UK tour in March this year to strong reviews and will transfer to Australia next year before heading to the West End.

God help us all. Susan Boyle is an average singer. If it wasn’t for the fact she looked terrible when she walked on stage and then sang okay, she would have been long forgotten. Way to celebrate mediocrity.
So who says she is an average singer? Perhaps you just don’t have a good ear for music. And obviously you have not listened to any of her recordings. But it may interest you to know that some of the biggest names in the business have paid tribute to her amazing talent. Her latest album, Standing Ovation, is just released and it is absolutely stunning.
Hmmm..I’m more than an “average singer” and I don’t have 18 million in sales and #1 sales in 30 countries. Might just be a bit more than initial looks involved here. And she indeed brushes up very well. I’m expecting this film to bring the message of determination and goodness to a wider audience. Also may it be an anti-bullying message to a world obviously so in need of one. Suggestion: Try listening to all of Ms. Boyle’s albums.
This has become such a tired, worn out, and highly disproved cliche. Recycled since 2009. So wrong it doesn’t deserve anyone’s time to argue. 18 million people feel differently, she looks good and sings beautifully, so I think it’s time for you to give up and let it be.
How account for the many famous pros (singers) who praised her….people like Streisand and Gaga and others…these people don’t know music?
There are a lot of people who don’t appreciate real music. Sorry for them. They are really missing out on a tremendous talent in Susan. And she is a very attractive woman when she has makeup on, which she seldom wears. Many ” Glamour?” gals would look worse without all the surgerys, and tons of makeup. I love her natural look,
Sounds like a combination of Blood Brothers and Billy Elliot, according to the reviews of the play. Could be a winner if they get the right director and cast.
Glad to hear that the Musical may be going to the West End. Elaine C. Smith’s star performance deserves it.
Glad they are making this. I think that dude can really sing!
A movie about an overweight, unattractive English housewife? Nah. It’ll end up being Scarlett Johansson in San Francisco and she’s, hmmm, I’m going to say magazine editor. And she hooks up with Chris Hemsworth. Adorable moppet optional. Johansson will prepare for the role by not plucking her eyebrows for a week.
There’s some singing, Simon Cowell does a cameo, and we close on the wedding where Scarlett sings her own wedding song while walking down the aisle. Cue rose petals, swell the music and we’re out.
Fox Searchlight made ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Slumdog Millionare’. They’ll treat the story seriously as it deserves. The musical got great reviews in the UK and a movie will allow more scope to tell her story.
The stage musical was produced by Michael Harrison AND BY Speur Co which is owned by Susan Boyle
I have seen the play and it was brilliant! I am hoping the movie will treat the inspiring story of this incredible woman with the same sensitivity and insight. She is one of the premier singers of our day That coupled with her moving story should make for a fantastic movie if the script is well written and a competent director is used.
Perhaps Quentin Tarantino directing Lindsay Lohan in the lead?
Imelda Staunton for a leading role! The girl deserves some awards recognition!
Great news! What a fantastic movie this will be and a true one at that. Susan’s story is so inspirational. And Susan, herself, brings joy to fans all over the world with her stunning voice and her marvelous personality. I just love her. I saw the IDAD musical four times in Scotland and loved it. Unbelievable to see that show unfold with just a few actors taking various roles. Spectacular! And Elaine C. Smith, on stage the entire time, was totally “Susan”, so convincing, and wonderful. Anxiously awaiting the movie and the musical in the USA.
If the press is to be believed, Susan prefers Julie Walters as the lead in the film.
Who? I thought she preferred Elaine C. Smith.
You’ve got me really curious. Can you please name one or two singers that you like and think are above average. I’d love to have a listen to someone you think is better than Susan Boyle. Thanks.
Susan Boyle: sure, she can sing okay – but this was about someone ordinary doing something extraordinary – there’s a real story there whether you like it or not. And she’s wacky, come on… this has got musical written all over it… Another piece of genius by Lucas Webb as far as I’m concerned. There’s plenty of diamonds in the subo story, bring it on Fox Searchlight, looking forward to it! And later, Subo in 3D
>And she’s wacky
Perhaps Clint Eastwood directing Sean Penn in drag in the lead?
I always smh over these folks whom listen ONLY to maybe 3 or 4 songs at most of Susan Boyles-immediately “conclude” they know what she is capable of vocally & in the meantime her REAL fans are well aware of at least 60 songs on Youtube alone all sung by Susan & when played side by side ,one can only conclude with “She really IS the best singer in the world” because of her incredible Range , Vocal power & strength and ever changing versatility that no other artist has displayed. Her new cd STANDING OVATION proves this. As far as the Movie , the MUSICAL is utterly superb & no wonder Fox Searchlight wanted to capitalize on it.Its a story that can inpsire sooo many especially those whom have been severly BULLIED & know what it feels like. But even non Susan fans will be drawn to it just to see the acting then hopefully have their own eyes opened to see more of what her True fans have always known.
Susan can absolutely sing, but more important than that, she has the ability to touch hearts,& penetrate deep into the soul of the listener…………… A lot of people get it, & a lot of people don’t, but a lot more people WIII get it, so BRING ON THE FILM!
Susan’s story is a mixture of sadness & joy, so representative of all of us, she gives us all hope that “If you can dream it, you can achieve it” if you but BELIEVE , then there is no stopping you, whatever the obstacles that come your way…………. Susan has proven that to all of us, but more importantly, she has proven it TO HERSELF, TRULY AN INSPIRATION………..
