This is a second international trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the action sequel that Paramount pushed back from a prime summer bow this year to March 29, 2013. At the time the studio said it was delaying the pic to add 3D. But it turned out after some digging by Nikki Finke that reshoots were needed after mediocre test scores and the poor decision to kill off Channing Tatum, who has turned into a big star since the first movie thanks to 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike. Now he’s most definitely back, as the new trailer makes clear:

I was all set to see this movie in June, but now that the date has been pushed back, the movie has been altered and Channing Tatum is going to be in it more, I’m going to skip it. Given that this is a guy movie, I don’t think I’ll be alone.
No you are by yourself
my interest has certainly waned, yes.
Yes, because why would guys want to see Duke in a G.I. Joe movie?
I’m confused… looks like he’s still killed off in the first act. Unless he comes back a surprise at the end. I can just hear the O.S. — “Someone call for backup?” turn around and surprise!
Looks like The Rock’s character from “The Fast and the Furious” franchise hooked up with Bruce Willis’s from “Red” to cameo their way through a straight-to-video “Tekken” sequel.
How exactly does this new trailer make it clear that they expanded Tatum’s role? It’s the same scene that was in the earlier trailer from last year. The trailer in its entirety is almost exactly the same as well. If there have been new scenes added, they are certainly not obvious. My guess is that Tatum filmed one extra scene where his character awakens out of a coma instead having him die. Keeping his character alive is more about the possible box office success of a third film where he will presumably retake a starring role.
[blockquote]Now he’s most definitely back, as the new trailer makes clear:[/blockquote]
Are you being sarcastic or don’t you know who Tatum is? This trailer is almost identical to the earlier trailers. The biggest change is the music, but Tatum isn’t in any more scenes than he was before.
If he wasn’t killed off, thn where is he
Maybe he’ll be said to be in a coma and be revealed to be okay at the end of the movie–his screen time will still be limited, but it at least leaves the door open to a return in another sequel.
If this is the case, it would be a neat coincidence, as this also happened to his character in the original cartoon: in the feature-length animated G.I. Joe movie from 1987, Duke was also killed off, but because of negative reactions from parents when Optimus Prime was killed off in the Transformers animated movie, they redubbed the dialogue so that Duke was only “in a coma” and recovered offscreen at the end of the film.
The more I see of this (expanded) trailer, the less I’m interested. Could the reshoots have made it worse? I think it was a colossal mistake to not release this film on the original date when people were jazzed to see it. It’s now lost all momentum and the trailer is almost the same, making the film feel like leftovers.
And who wants to pay full price for leftovers?
This has all the depth of a top 40 song, only I feel like I heard the song a year ago and I’m kind of sick of it now. They will use this as an example of what NOT to do with a tentpole for years to come.
I still can’t believe they went to all this trouble just to expand the role of a popular actor. I *like* Tatum, but this is ridiculous.
