HBO’s hot comedy Girls just wrapped production on its second season but the pay cable network is already looking ahead to a potential third season. I hear HBO is working on a deal to bring back executive producer Jenni Konner, who has been co-running the show with creator/star/executive producer Lena Dunham. Once Konner is locked in, the show is expected to move on to doing writer-staffing deals in anticipation of a pickup. Girls executive producer Judd Apatow hinted at the show’s pending renewal. “We’re about to shoot the third season of Girls,” he said in a video interview for The DP/30 Channel while promoting his new film, This Is 40.
Many networks and studios move in to make if-come deals with writer-producers of their hot shows before the official renewals in order to lock sought-after scribes and be able to hit the ground running when the pickup is made. “We’re looking forward to the launch of Season 2 and hope to have good news shortly thereafter,” HBO said in a statement. Season 2 of Girls premieres January 13.

They should sign them up for twelve seasons. This is the next Sex In the City, my friends. Just watch. With few comedies that are working on HBO, this one will hold the responsibility for awhile.
few comedies working? Hbo just had half of the comedy series nominations at Emmys. Something seems to be working. Just not your brain.
What a great take! If only people actually watched this show.
For such an iconic show, an awful lot of people can’t seem to learn the title. It’s Sex AND the City, not Sex In the City.
Uh, “hot?” Not even close. If not for the disgusting nepotism involved, this show wouldn’t have gotten a second season, let alone talk of a third.
How did the nepotism get them a second season? Is Lena Dunham related to someone at HBO?
yes if they had not picked it up Brian Williams would have pressured hbo? Do you know what nepotism is?
Love it when the spectators comment on industry politics they know nothing about.
He’s right – nobody cares about this show but her publicist and her parent’s friends. Get real, people.
I don’t get it. This show is a yawning bore. I could barely stomach five minutes let alone three seasons. HBO, what are you thinking??!!
GET over yourself. Girls is refreshing and innovative. HBO knows what they are doing.
Get over YOURSELF. Californication was refreshing and innovative, Girls is just moronic, pedantic garbage that appeals to no one outside NYC or the “born with a silver spoon up their asses” crowd.
Californication is on Showtime dear.
I hate nepotism and rich people but this is the best show on tv. Maybe you just hate women.
Obviously a lot of these comments are based soley on the pilot and not the first season as a whole, or even the first handful of episodes. Had half the people commenting had watched beyond the pilot they would realize how much of an oxymoron this comment is.

-1. Everyone on this board is upset because shes 20 something and making tons of money. Why is everyone so JELLY JELLY here?
As long as shows such as 90210 and tons of other crappy soap opera teen drenched dramas exist…I’ll applaud this one. At least she has the balls ( I cant think of anything else) to write and direct her episodes and be honest about how she feels. Not over saturated crap that most networks poop out.
Californication jumped the shark three seasons ago, pal. This show is one of the best things on TV right now.
+2
I like the Californication shout out. Overlooked. But I like Girls, too. Is that allowed?
Yes, it’s allowed and to be commended. You might of course be held in even higher regard for throwing in Skins (UK), The Thick of It and House of Lies, and loving them all too. “You might very well think that; I couldn’t possibly comment.” Francis Urquhart
And I, and most of the other people on earth, still plan on not watching…
Stop hating on talent, folks. Not everybody gets to live their dream. Get over it.
Californiacation is a great show to spank too. You mean you actually follow the storyline?
Dreadful show. HBO desperately trying to reach out beyond the 12 people who watch it and convince the world it’s a cool, watercooler series that everyone should be watching like in their heyday with Sex & The City and Entourage. Only thing is this plays like a bad video blog… and about as many people watch it. Without the Apatow pedigree, this show would be long gone.
Yeah, the show is okay, but I turn the channel everytime Kena shows her breasts. Keep your shirt on please…you’re funny, just not appealing to the human eye. I really turn away when she gets naked…she is so gross naked.
Funny girl though, both with humor and looks.
I meant “Lena” not “Kena”…
I wouldn’t have too much of a problem with a third season if they would try harder to keep more clothes on the whiny thick girl with entitlement issues.
“Looking ahead to” and “in anticipation of a pickup” is not a lock. Okay compared to Game of Thrones this is a cheapie but the larger picture is the HBO model and the economy. Cable depending on where you live – is anywhere from $40-$100 month so that you can pick up HBO. If HBO goes to a direct pay model it will be hard for them to come in under $20 a month and that can be a lot in this economy. Too many people are dumping any pay TV and some even dumping TV all together. It really is the economy.
How come Lena Dunham gets naked each episode yet Danny McBride doesn’t have to lose his jock strap on Eastbound & Down?
To be fair, I’d rather Lena Dunham didn’t get naked every episodes *shudder*
I wonder who dies and who survives this season. Can’t wait!
Nervis Rex – I don’t remember Californication being nominated for 5 Emmys the first season it aired. I also think if you look, less people watch Californication than Girls. As for who a show is supposed to appeal to – who wrote the rule that every show has to appeal to everyone. And as for your comment that you love “when spectators comment on nous try politics they know nothing about” – please take this moment to educate us all then because I’m confused as to how a show that gets rave reviews, generates press, gets nominations etc is the fault of nepotism. I don’t understand how nepotism is how a show keeps getting ordered and keeps getting a network to send more money in a show because from they way you say it HBO must be spending more money because they want art from Lena’s parents, or maybe they are huge fans of Bad Company’s music (I do hear they play Shooting Star in the offices daily). Oh maybe they just want favorable press coverage from Brian Williams? Seriously, what are you talking about because by the number of posts you have made here – it certainly seems as if you have more of an axe to grind than anything else….
If your intelligent rebuke is confused about how nepotism generates LA/New York critical love, awards nominations, and press… I don’t think you really understand how that all works.
Not confused about how neopotism works at all – but please educate me how it works here KILLERTV. I think you are uneducated how the emmy nomination process works unless all those different people in all those different categories REALLY REALLY wanted a deal on some of Lena’s parent’s artwork. Television, movies, theater, music – it’s all subjective – just because you don’t like it – doesnt mean the ones who do are wrong or that there has to be some conspiracy as to why it is liked…..
Standing slow clap.
The first episode was really bad. Just terrible. But the rest of the season was fantastic. Looking forward to more of this show.
Amazing. They air one season of this crap, then film another season of yet more crap, and now they want to set up yet ANOTHER season of this crap?
HBO, have you lost your damn minds?
Firebrand–You have the best taste. You rail on hunger games, a book that sold 40 million copies to men and women, young and old–and made 700mm at the bo.
And now girls, a show that is nominated for every award under the sun. Everyone else, including the industry, the audience and the critics, are wrong. You are right. Keep believing that.
Why you mad, bro? Jealous?
Sex and The City had a HUGE following. It appealed to a wide swath of women and men all over the country. Girls is a niche show for insecure, upper middle class white girls in New York. Even in the uber narcissistic cocoon that is the entertainment industry, Lena stands out.
Hmmm…I worked on SATC, and mostly women watched it. And I’m a guy, and I really like “Girls” (the people, and the show).
The show is lame. Dumpy, know-it-all, girls with HPV. So what? HBO used to be the best. What happened? I’ll wait for CURB to come back. And so we’re clear…True Blood sucks and Game of Thrones is for dorks.
The show is aggressively mediocre, derivative and unfunny. Everyone knows its flaws but many are invested in denial that the business has fallen creatively.
I love how everyone calls Lena narcissistic. What makes her narcissistic? The fact that she writes, directs and stars in her own show? Don’t remember people saying that about Woody Allen or Larry David. Why because she is getting paid a lot to write a book? Well – I think the market dictated that. And her Obama video? She supported her candidate. No one called Meat Loaf narcissistic when he butchered America The Beautiful. I don’t understand why she is called narcissistic. Truly.
I cant believe this show got a second season! Its basically a poor womans version of sex and the city. You have the main character who also happens to be a writer. What a coincidence. Then you have her slutty British friend (Samantha), her roomate which is the normal everyday girl with a boyfriend (miranda) , and the prude who is a virgin (charlotte). The only difference is that these girls are poor. Instead of hanging out at fancy restaurants and uber trendy night clubs they hang out at bars drinking beers.
I’m 21 and a New Yorker. Everyone I know loves this show. I think Lena is doing a great job!
