For a third time since it was conceived, TNT‘s new Dallas series will have to adjust its storylines to account for the absence of one of its signature characters, J.R. Ewing. And while the first two times the preparations turned out to be contingency plans that were never enacted, this time the show is forced to write off the villainous oilman following the death of the actor who’s portrayed the iconic character over the span of 35 years.
Related: R.I.P. Larry Hagman
Larry Hagman, who died Friday at age 81 from cancer complications, was in Dallas filming Season 2 of TNT’s Dallas. He had completed shooting a number of episodes — believed to be six — before his death, and will appear in the 15-episode Season 2 of the series, slated to premiere January 28. As of now things are fluid, and it is unclear how his passing will affect the production on the show, which was scheduled to resume following the Thanksgiving break. Extending the hiatus or scheduling one in the near future is a possibility so the writers can rework the scripts for the remaining episodes without Hagman and, more importantly, create a proper sendoff for J.R. The larger-than-life character was already at the heart of one of the most famous episodes of television as the November 1980 Dallas episode that resolved the series’ “Who shot J.R.?” cliffhanger remains the second-most-watched telecast of all time. J.R.’s farewell episode on the new Dallas will likely attract legions of fans of the iconic character.
Actually, Hagman almost didn’t make it to the Dallas sequel on TNT. J.R. had a prominent presence in developer/executive producer Cynthia Cidre’s original pilot script. But after months of a stalemate between Hagman and the project’s producer Warner Bros over money, Cidre wrote an alternative script that didn’t include Hagman, with J.R. represented only through archive footage from the original series. Fortunately for J.R. fans, the actor and the studio finally came to terms and that alternative script was never used.
Then last October, as Dallas was in the final stages of pre-production on its first-season order, Hagman announced that he had been diagnosed with what the actor described as a “very common and treatable” form of cancer. As a result, he was scheduled to only appear in the first three episodes plus the pilot. His future participation was in doubt and dependent on his treatment. Luckily, he was able to do all 10 episodes from the show’s first season.

i can not see how they can recast…my best suggestion would be to bring in the other brother…gary (knots landing) and have him have a chip on his shoulder and be the new bad guy..would allow other knots characters to come in also. so sad this happened i was so enjoying seeing jr again…wow just horrible ..i will miss larry for sure.
0% chance of a recast. Not sure why you even mention it. And no, Gary won’t be the new bad guy. That’d be totally contradictory to his character.
If Gary comes back pissed off enough for his treatment by the family and realizing JR is gone…oh yeah, this would make a great plot twist. But Ted Shackleford is on some soap during the day…contractual obligations might be a prob. Would love to seer Gary take on Cliff ?Barnes w John Ross’s help…
well he has been RECAST before..in the i dream of jeannie movies he was recast….so it is not an absurd idea. and when gary was drinking, if you remember, he was a real bastard…who knows what he has been up to since we last saw him. It is all in the writing…
and one final thought..this show has a history of recasting …miss ellie was recast in the midst of the show, so it would not be something new to the show.
I stand by my 0% chance of recast. Yes, they’ve recast, but they WILL NOT recast JR EWING!!
Dallas did recast Miss Ellie, but it was a botched job all the way around. Poor Donna Reed came on board for one season, but Larry H. couldn’t get past Barbara B.G. as his on-screen Mom, and made life somewhat uncomfortable for Miss Reed. Finally, Larry prevailed on Miss Bel Geddes to come back to the role she originated, and after much prodding ($$$), she did. But poor Donna Reed found out she was fired in the popular press, without a single call from the producers or the network. A shabby chapter in an otherwise stellar original run for CBS and then production company Lorimar (prior to Warner Bros TV absorbing them in the 1990′s).
Bobby definitely needs an antagonist to his protagonist and though Larry Hagman (J.R.) will go in the Dallas Hall of Fame and no one will ever take his place and he surely will be missed (I watched the original Dallas), there still needs to be a J.R. character and I think Christopher Walken would be a good second best if he’s available; he has the right moxy for the role.
I loved Larry Hagman as JR. Instead of just writing him out how about, how about someone shots JR, but this time they were successful. Use of shadows and stand in’s would work. I will watch all year to find out who did it and winds up in prison for life. Be plenty of suspects.
That is a great idea. I love the new show and will really miss Jr.
One day, Dallas no doubt will be given the reboot treatment but for this series – no recasting.
I must agree with Alan. JR Ewing should die in his sleep and created a new bad guy to replace him. It could be another son of Jock Ewing that no one didn’t know about. I just can’t wait to see the new season of Dallas in January 2013.
It is not a good idea recasting and it should not have been that much of a surprise that Larry Hagman may have to be written out at some future date. A great shame that he has died, but he is 81 and could not have been in good health with throat cancer and a long history or ill health since 1992. He can easily be written out and has only made 6 episodes in any event. A new ending should be done as a tribute to such a great guy and a great baddy. He will be sadly missed and I send my condolances to his family and all the cast members, his close friends. Bringing in another brother to replace him would not work and would not be good as a tribute to J R. The show now is about the new generation, so allow poor J R to rest in peace and please do not replace him. YNWA
i agree not to replace J.R. he is irreplasable. The people in the show could go and visit him at a cimetery , talk about him and gradually we would get use to his disapearance.
monik from canada
Of course, all of us who were fans of both versions of “Dallas” (old and new) were saddened by Larry Hagman’s passing. He continued to be active right up to his death as recent photos showed.
A lot of us who were fans of the old show were expecting a “Who Killed J.R.?” plot during season two anyway because this version is supposed to be centered around John Ross and Christopher. I would think that’s how Hagman would want J.R. to go out anyway, and it would be a fitting end to such a character like J.R.
I agree. We need JR to be shot again.(maybe the South American badguys) Larry would approve! “Who shot J.R. 2″ Perfect way to go.
Actually, if you brought back Gary and Ted Schakleford (who played him on Dallas and Knots Landing) were unavailable, I would look to have Meatloaf (who is a Dallas-area native) play Gary. He could bring a much edgier Gary into the mix.
Also, there are Gary’s twins, Bobby and Betsy from “Knots” who (are Lucy’s full siblings and) now would be in their late 20s. They could be brought in to spell trouble as could the character of Molly Whittaker, Gary’s now-adult daughter who was born at the very end of “Knots” in 1993 (a lot of people forget “Knots” outlived the original “Dallas” by two seasons).
Meatloaf as Gary Ewing? Only if they get Thin Lizzy to play Val.
Gary was already set to make several appearances this season, even before Hagman’s death. Valene will appear as well. But I don’t think he should be written as the villain.
I can’t imagine re-casting JR.
I expect there will be a “Where’s JR?” which will ultimately reveal his death & lead to John Ross, grieving, going off the deep end with Bobby moving into more of “Jock Ewing” roll sooner as tensions escalate between the cousins. It might be a good time to bring some other old characters back & I hope “Pam” shows up, if only to make sure “JR” is actually dead. I think Hagman would appreciate that.
It is sad about Larry passing. I will miss him. I agree that they should bring in Gary and Val and the other members of Knots Landing.
Michael Douglass…..
No, they should do it exactly the same way J.R.’s Daddy died… in a helicopter crash in Latin America looking for new oil fields!
Even though I know that JR won’t be killed off the same way as Jock Ewing, it brings back thoughts of my childhood tears watching that episode of Jock’s demise. Thinking back, it was so creative and well written and seeing somebody find that darn Lion? pendant made me bawl….
of course we’ll miss him!! but he can be replaced, lots of actors could do it, this is what they get for waiting more than 2o years to revive the series!!of course the originals are old ..duh..lol.
THE ONLY PERSON THAT CAN MAYBE REPLACE LARRY WOULD JAMES BROLIN
AND THEN HE WOULD HAVE TO STUDY THE CHARACTER VERY HARD TO
PULL IT OFF
james brolin would be a good idea at casting ,but maybe another brother or as jack ewing who the late dack rambo played in the 80′s.
Gary as a bad guy? yeah right,he was such a whiny wimp.Booby was a good guy but he still knew how to fight and was no where near being a whimp,Gary was just pathetic,no one will except him as a villian,if they tried everytime he pulled a dirty deed and smiled about it it would be laughable, nobody and I mean NOBODY has that wicked crap eaten grin like J.R. EWING!!!!!
How sad to hear of Larry Hagman’s passing. My heart goes out to his family and friends. I am fortunate to have met Larry once. We had such a nice chat with him. He had his beautiful personalized leather chair with him even.
Major Tony Nelson and of course J.R. Ewing will never be forgotten. They were two very popular TV characters brought to life by Mr. Hagman. Who else could make those two so unique? I can only think of one person, Larry Hagman.
There is no one else to play JR, so I hope TNT’s Dallas can add in a very special good bye to J.R. Ewing. Could there be a question of who killed JR once again? Then have the same character that did shoot JR before shoot him again. The first time didn’t work so why not a repeat after all these years?
Larry will be missed!!
The first person to shoot him (Kristin) died in the Ewing pool.
Sue Ellen’s sister, Kristin, was the one who shot JR. However, she later drown in the Southfork pool in season 4, so a repeat attempt is not possible.
Kristen (Sue Ellen’s sister) was the shooter, and she later drowned in the Southfork pool.
Drowned? I still say JR pushed her off the banister into the pool! He was looking at her holding that drink…
Ouch – that “heart going out” thing…….
Starting with a bit-part role in his mother, Mary Martin’s London production of “South Pacific” in 1950, he had one helluva run.
We’ll miss you J. R., er—-Larry.
i loved him rest in peace larry
RIP, Mr Hagman.
I think the only fitting send off for this iconic actor and iconic character is a replay of the “Who shot JR?” storyline. Let the character go out with the flair he’s always had, and use a variation of the storyline that was going to be used, had Mr Hagman not been able to come to contract terms those many years ago.
The Dallas people already have a solution that can be resurrected……just have junior wake up at the start of season two with his wife by his side amd say, “Honey, I just had the weirdest dream!”
NO, NO, NO ! No more dreams !!I am totally supporting – as others are suggesting – a reworked “Who killed JR” story concept. Maybe it’s finally by the man he’s tormented all his life – Cliff, or if not have Katherine W come back to town to finish the job
Absolutely not! I don’t want to see Cliff get the last laugh on ol’JR. I want to see JR crush Cliff from beyond the grave.
yes exactly lol..
RIP Larry. I don’t know how the show will go beyond next season without him.
I can see how the show goes on. It’s sad that Larry has passed, but the show wasn’t about him. He was a supporting player. Yes, a major one, but it’s not the original Dallas where he was central. I can see his death being a huge new starting point for the show.
Read most of the comments published on various sites about Dallas. Most of them are about JR, who was absolutely integral to the show. We’ll see what happens.
My husband and I are so upset… Both being children of the 80′s and growing up on Dallas made us come to love JR. The new Dallas blew us away. My husband dressed as him at my
40th bday – 80′s party – bullet hole in his back and all. We are so sad to see this icon pass and can’t wait to see his Dallas send off! Rest in Peace Larry!
So very sad to hear of Larry Hagman’s death! From the UK and always been a fan. The first series of the new Dallas only finished here about 3 weeks ago. It won’t be the same without him. RIP
RIP LARRY, PATRICK AND LINDA PROB WILL NOT DO THE SHOW WITHOUT HIM AS THEY WERE WITH HIM WHEN HE PASSED.. WANNA TALK ABOUT TRUE FRIENDS TO THE END!!!
Wtf? Of course they will continue without him. They were by his side because they were long friends. So sad to see Larry go, but the show will go on.
As much as I’ll miss Larry, they should do another who KILLED JR. What a sendoff for JR. Loved that character. Toni
The best timer of comic one-liners in the business and the best advert for how to cope with serious illnesses. What a survivor. As he said of his character, JR, death would be the only deal he ever lost. Have one on us in heaven, Larry.
Rip larry:( this is horrible news. He was one of the best bad guys ever on tv. I dont know how they can go on. He can not ne replaced we all know that. But they should have a old.charrcter come back and be the new head bad guy.
RIP Major Nelson.
Larry Hagman was a damn good actor. R.I.P., indeed.
The show will not be the same without JR, he will be missed dearly.
The show will not be the same without JR, he will be dearly missed. But I love all the other characters and while it won’t be the same without JR, I’m sure the writers will think of a clever way to go on without JR. RIP Larry Hagman you are a true legend!
Every Friday Night I was glued to the TV set to watch Dallas for one hour I forgot about everything else I was part of the Ewing Family! Then 21 years later it came back to TNT on Wednesday nights and I was in Heaven watching it again! I was out with friends last night when I heard the news of Larry’s passing and I just couldn’t believe it I was sad big time! This actor was so much to me playing the greatest character ever on TV! I posted several pictures of larry on Facebook! No one knows the future of Dallas I hope it continues but there’s never ever gonna be a character like JREwing Again! RIP larry Hagman Thank you for all the wonderful episodes of Dallas!!!
With all the deserved talk of J.R. Ewing and his who shot jr legacy, I’d like to take a moment to point out how amazing Mr Hagman was in I Dream Of Jeannie. Some might remember the show as a trivial sitcom, but Major Nelson was one of the funniest comic foils performed. The shear comic physicality of the role, the slapstick alone was enough to do in lesser actors. My friends and I grew up on that show and laughed our assess off non stop. Godspeed Major Nelson, and say hello to Sammy Davis Jr
.
The show should continue in his honor. Patrick Duffy and Linda were his dearest friends and should carry on. Larry would want that. An amazing talent. RIP.
Rest in peace, Mr. Hagman. Not having met or known Hagman personally, I can only speak as a fan of his work and to that end, I am devastated that I will never get to witness the full storyline the writers and Mr. Hagman had in store for J.R. Ewing. It was a gift to see him return alongside Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray, and the rest of the original characters. I will still tune into the new Dallas beyond season 2, so long as they end and explain J.R.’s death in a meaningful way that adds to the fantastic storylines the writers, crew, and cast have delivered thus far.
Such terrible news, but at least you went out on top, Larry. Be at peace.
A lifelong fan,
Sean
I had the distinct pleasure of working with Mr. Hagman twice. He was an absolute blast. Funny as hell and more full of life than anyone I’ve ever met. It was an honor to work with and know him. May he rest in peace.
Could bring Gary and Val on as regulars to help bobby fight off john Ross and cliff barnes
He had his way of conducting business deals. He used a lot of extortion and blackmail to get what he wanted. I’m looking forward to season 2 to see the storyline how he died. I think that it will be written the same way when Jock passed away. In the show he always liked his bourbon and broads. And I’ll never forget his way with words.
Hagman was a fine actor – how he never won an Emmy for his work on Dallas is beyond me.
But he really is not at the center of the new series. He did not appear in every episode of the new series, and even when he did appear, it was just for a few scenes per episode. That show’s success will rise and fall on the backs of the younger cast.
Gary my ass. Gary will never be back. The show cannot last without Hagman.
Um, Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark have both already started filming. Gary and Valene were already set to be part of a major storyline this season even before this happened.
Gary is great!!!!
