James McAvoy is deep in negotiations to join DreamWorks’ WikiLeaks film, Deadline has confirmed. “It’s close to being done,” an insider said today. McAvoy would play Daniel Domscheit-Berg, the right-hand man to WikiLeaks boss Julian Assange. Domscheit-Berg’s book Inside WikiLeaks: My Time With Julian Assange At The World’s Most Dangerous Website is partially the basis for the film. The Twilight Saga’s Bill Condon will direct. DreamWorks also acquired WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy, by David Leigh and Luke Harding, for the film. Josh Singer wrote the script. Benedict Cumberbatch will play Assange in the as-yet-untitled film. And there is no shortage of WikiLeaks and Assange films on the horizon: Universal and Marc Shmuger have an Alex Gibney-directed documentary, while HBO, Universal and Megan Ellison are also working on WikiLeaks films. McAvoy is repped by UTA and United Agents.

Joel Kinnaman was a better fit for the -Berg role. Cumberbatch has worked with Mcavoy twice before and I’d have preferred him to build new on screen relationships as a leading man. I’m sure they have great chemistry but time its for Cumberbatch to step away from his comfort zone pals. Tired of Mcavoy and Fassbender’s faces appearing in everything
Very excited to see what Cumberbatch will do with Assange and the Epstein roles. He always crafts his characters brilliantly.
Or maybe Kinneman and Cumberbatch had a screen-test together and the producers/ director see no chemistry at all and they saw how good the dynamic between McAvoy and Cumberbatch is that’s why they chose James. I don’t think “comfort zone pals” can apply to this.
Well, for example, Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were in 4 movies together already. So? Sometimes actors have such a great chemistry it would be a shame not to use it when deep chemistry is needed to carry a movie.
I agree.
like Johnny deep & Helena Bonham Carter.
They are brilliant when acting together.
McAvoy and Cumberbatch will make a great combo.
I really love Mr. McAvoy’s work – never seen him give a bad performance. May have to check this out.
