It’s done: Jeff Zucker has been named president of CNN Worldwide. Turner Broadcasting System chairman and CEO Phil Kent made the announcement this morning. “Jeff’s experience as a news executive is unmatched for its breadth and success,” Kent said. “As a programmer, a brand-builder and a leader, he will bring energy and new thinking to CNN. I couldn’t be happier to welcome him or more excited about what he’ll accomplish here.” Long the leading contender to take over Jim Walton’s job at the ratings-challenged news network, Zucker joining CNN seemed a sure thing earlier this week. The former NBCUniversal CEO will take over in January.

Here’s the full announcement from CNN:
Jeff Zucker will join CNN Worldwide as president of the multi-platform global news enterprise, it was announced today by Phil Kent, chairman and CEO of CNN parent company Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. In January 2013, Zucker will assume executive oversight of a portfolio of 23 branded news and information businesses that includes CNN/U.S., CNN International, CNN.com and HLN and reaches more than 2 billion people in some 200 countries around the world. Zucker will report to Kent and will be based at CNN in New York.
Zucker started his 25-year career with NBC as a researcher for NBC Sports’ coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympic Games and rose to president and chief executive officer of NBC Universal. He was named executive producer of Today in January 1992; under his eight-year leadership, the program was the most-watched morning news show and the most profitable program on television. Zucker went on to executive-produce NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and the network’s coverage of the Persian Gulf War, the 1993 and 1997 presidential inaugurations and the 2000 elections. He was promoted to president of NBC Entertainment, president of the NBC Entertainment, News & Cable group and president and CEO of the NBC Universal Television Group. Currently, Zucker is executive producer of the syndicated daytime show Katie.
“Jeff’s experience as a news executive is unmatched for its breadth and success,” said Kent. “He built and sustained the number-one brand in morning news, and under his watch NBC’s signature news programming set a standard for quality and professionalism. As a programmer, a brand-builder and a leader, he will bring energy and new thinking to CNN. I couldn’t be happier to welcome him or more excited about what he’ll accomplish here.”
“I am thrilled to join the distinguished team of journalists across the worldwide platforms of CNN,” said Zucker. “The global reach and scale of the CNN brand is unparalleled in all of news. Outside of my family and the Miami Dolphins, there is nothing I am as passionate about as journalism. I spent the most rewarding years of my career as a journalist, and it’s where I look forward to spending many more. I am grateful to Phil Kent for this opportunity, and I’m excited to return to daily newsgathering and compelling storytelling in a place that values those above all else.”
The original 24-hour news network, CNN has the greatest reach of any domestic news network. The CNN brand on television extends to 100 million households in the U.S. and 265 million households abroad, with significant online and mobile reach and a global newsgathering network with 45 locations. CNN signatures include Anderson Cooper 360, The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, Piers Morgan Tonight, State of the Union, Amanpour and Quest Means Business, as well as award-winning documentaries, unrivaled breaking news coverage and peerless political reporting.
CNN Worldwide, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, is the most trusted source for news and information. Its reach extends to nine cable and satellite television networks; one private place-based network; two radio networks; wireless devices around the world; CNN Digital Network, the No. 1 network of news Web sites in the United States; CNN Newsource, the world’s most extensively syndicated news service; and strategic international partnerships within both television and the digital media.

he will bring energy and new thinking to CNN
Hahaha…right.
Annd… good-bye, cnn!
This is assisted suicide for CNN – if NBC is any indication.
Good to know that the evil spirit is back in town.
OK, CNN anchors, expect mass reorganizations and firings. You’ve been warned.
Wait.. his business and programming decisions (like the Tonight Show debacle) crippled NBC so much so that, years later, the network is just now able to regain it’s footing (thank God for REVOLUTION).. and he gets this gig? The very definition of failing upwards.
@ Andrew: you got that right about “failing upward”. I see Matt Lauer becoming CNN’s new “elder statesman”/anchor and Wolf Blitzer in drag for Halloween comin’ down the pike!
Going from NBC to CNN is failing upwards?
and when does the CNN funeral start ?
I’d suggest that Zucker will do for CNN what he did for NBC (kill it) but CNN is pretty much dead and stinking anyway. I could fart in an elevator and get a bigger audience than Anderson Cooper or Soledad O’Brien. CNN will be selling off their furniture by this time next year.
Just when you thought CNN couldn’t get any worse…
In best James Earl Jones voice: This…was CNN.
The Dr. Kevorkian of TV execs.
This line is too funny.
Spit out my water laughing.
This is the perfect job for Zucker and there are plenty of people who wish him well. He was always at his best as a news producer and despite some flawed decisions, he had a pair, which is more than the snivelling trolls who will doubtless pile on here, because of course they have a flawless resume, a full bank account and have recently banged their hot wife, so they need to go online and spread venom…oh no they are looking at last night’s pizza box and heading back to bed. All the best JZ – have fun!
Jeff Zucker is the new president of CNN His first act as president will be replacing Wolf Blitzer with Jay Leno
I’m sure Leno will mention this in his monologue tonight and lead into a Judge Ito joke.
I hear he promised the gig to Conan first.
Besides the fact that he wasn’t a Good NBC Universal CEO, he knows news. He livened up the Today Show, and it became number 1 under him.
It became number #1 in spite of him.
He knew news when he was running that at NBC 10 years ago – nothing he may know from then is relevant. The guy couldn’t even exec produce Katie Couric’s show, but now let’s give him CNN? This seems like the makings of a great Anchorman 2 plot twist…
Agreed
Jeff Zucker has successes too. Must-See-TV Comedy Thursday line up with Friends/Will and Grace, etc. and The West Wing among other of his better decisions. I plan on taking a wait and see attitude prior to prejudging the network. I have been watching CNN since Day 1 and so I have witnessed brilliance and have seen downslides too.
I have hope that Mr. Zucker will bring that great independence that FoxNews and MSNBC fails to do consistently.
and I would like to see a Sports Hour return as well as maybe a Weather show too, climate and environment. I miss the Space and Science element like Miles Obrien brilliantly did.
Hopefully Mr. Zucker will balance better with ethnic/race anchors/reporters like the great days of Ted Turner. Bring us back Mr. Zucker.
Must See TV was well established when Zucker showed up. NBC’s Thursday night powerhouse died under him.
Zucker has already promised Erin Burnett that she will get Anderson Cooper’s time slot in 2017. When Zucker took over NBC it was firing on all cylinders and he ran it into the ground, it will be interesting to see how he does with a network that is already a mess, what with talentless twits like Piers Morgan dominating the schedule.
I think he’ll be saving that seat for his pal Couric once her horrible talk show gets canceled in May.
I like Zucker, he’s the guy that handed Conan’s unfunny, red-headed ass to him and told him “See ya, unfunny red head.” Whereupon Conan took his unfunny show to God knows where and a true GOD, the man with the MOTORCYCLES, JAY LENO, got his seat back.
Jeff “Kicking Ass and Takin’ Names” Zucker you are my hero. Just do not let Gavin Polone negotiate your contract for you, and you’ll do just fine.
Great news for Jeff Z. I’m so glad for him. He’s just one of the nicest guys in Hollywood and an all around genuine person.
Dude, have you been drinking the bong water lately? How can you praise this guy who literally destroyed NBC in a such a short time span and what makes you think he’ll do any better at CNN?
Usernames are now the go to way indicate sarcasm on the Internet.
Wow, does anyone at CNN that helped make this decision watch tv…use google?
JZs probably a smart enough guy but really? …no one else with a better track record available?
So many studios and nets seem to shuffle the same execs around and around
and with each move fatter pay checks await them no matter the wreckage they leave…and layoffs for everyone else.
Where’s Dave Sirulnick when you need him?
