Jeff Zucker is expected to be named the new worldwide president of CNN, The New York Times is reporting. A source with knowledge of the Zucker/CNN talks confirmed to Deadline, “They have been in conversation for a long time and it looks like this is a done deal.” The announcement of the former NBC Universal chief executive to replace the outgoing Jim Walton is supposed to happen within the next few days. Walton officially steps down from his post on December 31st. Zucker is currently the executive producer of Katie Couric‘s syndicated daytime talk show but has been looking to make a move back into the corporate ranks. As Deadline reported last month, Disney-ABC have already started searching for a replacement for Zucker on Couric’s show. For the time being, the daytime show will be run by the current producing team. Only recently Zucker’s name emerged as a CNN contender even though the job is much smaller than the top NBCU gig he held from 2007-2010 when he was unceremoniously fired by new owner Comcast #2 Steve Burke. Formerly executive producer of Today from 1992-2000 and before that an NBC news producer, Zucker will take on the ratings-challenged cable news network whose Nielsen’s have been plummeting. However, Zucker’s news experience is now over a decade old and the landscape has changed dramatically.

The end of CNN
ya, cnn is in bad enough shape. can it take jeff as it’s boss?… doubtful.
As is so often the case, the haters have it wrong. Jeff is a fabulous executive and leader. Winning is the name of the game and he kept NBC number one for much longer than it should have been. He then grew NBCU to new heights. Did he develop new hit shows during his short tenure at NBC? No. Get over it He is going to kick ass at CNN. Believe it, haters.
Nice post, Jeff, er, promo guy.
I don’t know what you’re smoking but Zucker cost NBC millions! He’s a walking disaster…from primetime to late night, he almost totally destroyed the NBC Brand! I assume he give great meeting and the dullards at CNN don’t know the difference between talk and action…they should ask Jay or Conan.
Zucker didn’t BUILD NBC, he destroyed it. Not a single real hit during his tenure. He blamed his incompetence on a string of programming heads he fired – he should have resigned gracefully.
He destroyed the network’s CASH COW – The Tonight Show with his horrible mishandling of the Conan/Jay Leno debacle. You announce that you’re going to replace the long time #1 rated personality in late night in 5 years to give it to CONAN? What???? He made some of the dumbest programming moves from the moment he got there to the day he left. Even Bob Wright admitted ” I had the choice to have fired him or promoted him – I probably should have fired him.” CNN can’t survive him.
This is AWESOME news!! — for msnbc
But isn’t he bad?
Wolf Blitzer is looking over his shoulder in case Jeff goes nuts and brings Katie back to news. This is a cynical joke…but, stranger things have happened.
Getting rid of Wolf, Cooper, and Crowley would be the smartest thing to do. Just start from scratch. It can’t get any worse because CNN has already hit rock bottom.
CNN, get ready for NBC-quality programming and ratings!
Can’t wait for Zucker to launch the “super-sized” versions of Anderson Cooper and Candy Crowley. At least he is failing sideways and not upward any more
He may have been good on the Today show (debatable), but he destroyed NBC. Why does CNN think this will be a good idea?
Now CNN really is doomed
Didn’t he almost singlehandedly destroy NBC? Just wow CNN.
And you thought CNN ratings were bad now…
He’ll def f that up just like f’d up NBC.
This means Jay Leno will be taking over for Anderson Cooper in the 9 pm slot.
Novel idea! Jay would be GREAT in primetime!!
Laughing out loud.
Good for CNN. There is not a better person to turn CNN around than Jeff Zucker. Any of the people in Hollywood and the press who hate him (and there are many) would have to admit that there is no one better at running a daily news operation than Jeff. Hollywood and its sycophantic trade press hated him because he had the audacity to try to change up the broken, bloated broadcast network business model. But even they can’t criticize his record as a newsman.
Hi, Jeff!
Thanks, Jeff.
Oh, he “changed it up” alright. He singlehandedly took the #1 network in ratings, quality, and profit and “changed it up” into 4th placed dreck from which it has yet to fully recover. If it takes audacity to accomplish that, then indeed, Mr Zucker has it in spades.
Mike, are you a pal of his to be even uttering these praises for a guy that single-handily destroyed a once-promising network? What are you saying man?! Dude, think before you utter anything like this drivel! You’re losing your mind.
totally right on
At this rate, the new Univision/ABC news channel is going to beat CNN.
Get ready for Super-Sized Wolf Blitzer.
@Jff U.: Hilarious.
perfect job for him!
I wonder if Mr. Zucker will have CNN make him an annual holiday video showing all of his accomplishments for the year. Does this sound crazy? It really isn’t. This was done every year he was in charge of NBC.
Say buh bye to CNN NOW LOL!
This seems to be the definition of failing “up.” This guy was terrible at NBC and he gets this gig? SMH… Good luck to him and them.
not sure cnn can be considered ‘up’ from nbc.
Nothing can improve CNN’s ratings. THe reason is that cable news viewers prefer to watch FOX if they are Republican and MSNBC if they are Democrat. CNN still does not understand this. They are going to drop even lower regardless of what Zucker does and there’s nothing he can do. CNN thought they could occupy the middle “impartial” slot but there are very few cable news watchers who don’t identify as Republican or Democrat. There is simply no audience for what CNN offers. They have made themselves non-essential and thus no reason to watch their shows.
By focusing on the Fox = Republican and MSNBC = Democratic you marginalize the main issue, which is that CNN is not supposed to be the political channel for moderates, it is supposed to be the WORLDWIDE news leader. Not all news is political in nature. CNN was created to cover news from around the world, a role they have largely abandoned. Before I join in the almost universal condemnation of Zucker, I will at least wait and see if he can help CNN regain its original mandate.
LOL…lots of luck or laughing out loud…they will need both…why does CNN keep making the most insane decision ever? and they wander why rating are in the toilet…it used to be the place watch news, serious news and know what was going on…that’s long gone..
hiring sucker oops Zucker is like hiring Cynthia Hudson in Spanish CNN..do they really check their track record or only how they sell themselves..two very different things ..
good luck..
CNN hires Jeff Zucker? Was NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman not available?
Wow, CNN. Do you follow the news? Jeff Zucker?
How does this guy carry the baggage of treating people horribly, consistently not deliver, and fail up and up and up?
Kiss of death…….
Yay! 24hrs of Coupling and Joey !
