NBC is shaking up the leadership at the Today show. Alexandra Wallace, SVP of NBC News, will be in charge of the four-hour program, The New York Times reports. The Times cites people at the network who described the plan on condition of anonymity because it had not been announced. She and a yet-to-be-named producer will succeed Jim Bell, who’s been in charge of the show since 2005. Bell was executive producer of last summer’s London Olympic games and reportedly will be returning to his roots at NBC Sports full time, according to TV Newser. Bell succeeded former NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol, who executive produced every Olympics from 1992 until his abrupt departure in May over a contractual dispute when he was replaced by Mark Lazarus. Bell spent 16 years with NBC Sports & Olympics and worked on every Olympic Games NBC has broadcast since 1992 in either sports (1992, 1996, 2000, 2002 and 2004) or news (2006, 2008 and 2010). Bell won Emmys for his work on the 1992, 1996, 2000 & 2002 Olympics and a Peabody for NBC’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony.
Bell also took much of the heat for the ouster of Ann Curry as co-anchor earlier this year and the rough transition that followed. He told the New York Times in September that the decision to remove her was all his – and not Matt Lauer’s as had been rumored. “Hindsight is 20/20″, he said. “You can sit there and think this or that, but we’re comfortable with that decision (to make her anchor) and the one we’ve made now.”
Today’s ratings slide started in April just before Curry’s departure at the end of June. During the final week in August, ABC’s Good Morning America topped Today in total viewers and the key 25-54 demo by the widest margin in 18 years. Except for a slight bump during the London Olympics, GMA beat Today in eight of the last 10 weeks of the summer and has kept up the pace for much of the time this fall.

Ironic. Seems he got the exact same treatment he gave Ann Curry, only without the public and unconvincing attempt by Matt Lauer to feign caring…
Somewhere Ann Curry is smiling.
First order of business, get rid of the unappealing Savannah and let Lauer’s contract not be renewed.
Time for a shake-up. And time for Matt Lauer to really be honest about how much longer he wants to do this. The smart move for Matt would be to pull a Carson and leave before people get sick of him — a point that is fast approaching. GMA is just a better, more caffinated show right now and Bell wasn’t keeping pace.
“The Today Show” is really just another version of “Entertainment Tonight”
I agree with every one of the posters. Miss Ann. Bored by Savannah. Won’t miss Matt at all now that he’s revealed his true colors. I still think Al Roker is on of the most underrated personalities on television. I’m not saying his edged aren’t rough, but he feels authentic and I like that.
Now, who takes responsibility for hiring the sports guy that ran Today into the ground?
This is not a surprise. It’s been written already that he would leave Today to work for NBC Sports. BTW, Matt just signed a new contract this year for big money, he’s not going anywhere.
Number ONE. Time to phase out Matt Lauer. If not, NBC has to face the consequences of this contract Matt signed for big $$$. If NBC/Uni is so budget tight with all these layoffs and cuts, why give a contract to someone that viewers don’t like much anymore?
The Today Show is in trouble, for sure. The handling of the Ann Curry dismissal is reprehensible. and Savannah Guthrie is not exactly doing a whole lot better either. Al Roker is doing just fine and sometimes I feel that he is getting caught in the middle of mess that he does not deserve since it doesn”t apply to him. I feel that he is trying to keep things happy and in harmony with all the members of the Today Show.
I am so happy for Willie Geist coming on board. He was the best thing on MSNBC with Way Too Early and also he and Mike Barnicle give MJ the best wake up conversations.
All the rest are good for balance.
The main problem in this whole equation is Lauer. Sure Curry didn’t help the ratings grow but what has Guthrie done since she took over? The show is actually losing more viewers as Lauer just sits back and rakes in his huge contract extension. Maybe a buyout of his deal might be necessary to prevent the slide from continuing but the whole 4th hour of this show is just overkill and nonsensical as well and should be canceled.
