Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways won the best Canadian feature film award at Toronto as part of a festival run that included a U.S. premiere at AFI Fest and a world premiere in the Un Certain Regard sidebar at Cannes. That’s where lead actress Suzanne Clement took a best actress nod for her role as a woman coming to terms with her fiance’s admission that he wants to become a woman. The 1990s-set drama has a spot in the upcoming Palm Springs festival and will be released here by Breaking Glass Pictures in the spring. Here’s an exclusive clip that shows why the Cannes jury fell for Clement:

So excited to see this film and glad it’s finally coming stateside! From everything I’ve read, Dolan’s best yet!
Xavier Dolan is one of the most exciting filmmakers on the international scene. All his films have an incredible energy and vision to them — he may turn out to have one of the most accomplished cinematic careers in cinema when all is said and done. You may not like everything he does, but the boy has ambition, and ambition is so rare in American cinema these days.
Also, watching Suzanne Clement in this clip reminded me (sadly, again) just how thin and weak roles for actresses continue to be in our particular milieu.
Let’s step it up, Hollyweird!
^^^ I completely agree with you with the types of weak roles. But Suzanne was amazing.
Xavier Dolan is a genius. Laurence anyways and suzanne Clement’s perf. Deserve to be recognized by the golden globes
Suzanne Clement is brilliant. Wow.
I hope the HFPA members are watching this:
Best Foreign Movie
Best Actress
Nominations, please!!!
Awesome!!! I saw this movie at Cannes and was blown away. It is a beautiful piece of film-making and Suzanne Clement is unbelievably good in this role.
Real, true, painful and fantastic. And spoken in an unabashedly Quebecois accent (homesick!). Brava, Suzanne!
Saw it last year. Terrible, self-indulgent film. There’s something interesting here, but it is marred by an unnecessary 3 hour running time and countless, and I mean countless, musical montages. Just cut the crap and be a storyteller. And yes, for that matter, the film’s best moment? You’ve just seen it.
Xavier Dolan is incredibly overrated as is this film.
I’m greatly looking forward to seeing this film. If the clip is any indication, it was a tour de force performance for Suzanne Clement. Great work!
