MTV is shaking up its top programming ranks for a second time in the last two years with the appointment of Susanne Daniels. Effective immediately, she replaces David Janollari. EVP Janollari, along with EVP MTV Production Chris Linn, were elevated two years ago to take take over the
responsibilities of departing Tony DiSanto. Daniels is given DiSanto’s former title of president of programming vs. EVP for Janollari. She will oversee development and programming for the network, including scripted and reality series, news and documentaries, production and talent. She will be based in LA and report to MTV Music & Logo Group president Van Toffler and MTV president Stephen Friedman. Linn, who previously reported to Toffler and Friedman, will now report to Daniels, Toffler and Friedman.
Given her bigger title, it appears that Daniels will have more power than Janollari ever had. I hear he had been growing increasingly frustrated that many key decisions on the scripted shows he develops, including scheduling, were being made in New York largely without his input. Meanwhile, Viacom has been quietly recruiting executives for the top programming post. The process had been going on for awhile as Janollari informed MTV brass of his intention to leave at the end of his contract months ago. Janollari’s track record at MTV has been marked by some hits, like Awkward and Teen Wolf, and some misses, including the controversial Skins. His latest scripted entries, including The Inbetweeners and Craig Wright’s Underemployed, have failed to gain traction, due in part to scheduling. “David played an important role in advancing MTV’s leadership position the last few years — particularly in fortifying our scripted programming strategy with such hits as Teen Wolf and Awkward and the critically acclaimed I Just Want My Pants Back,” Friedman said. “We will always be grateful for his contributions and wish him the best.”
MTV had gone after Daniels twice before, most recently when DiSanto was leaving at the end of 2010, but at the time she only was looking to work part-time and wasn’t comfortable with the frequent travel to New York the position originally entailed. (The mother of three ultimately signed up for a consulting gig at Oprah Winfrey’s OWN last year.)
This is the second time Daniels and Janollari have been part of two consecutive regimes of the same network. Daniels was president/co-president of entertainment at the WB before stepping down in 2001 when co-president Jordan Levin took over the job solo. He was then replaced by Janollari in 2004. After taking four years off, Daniels did a three-year stint stint as president of entertainment for Lifetime, which she left in 2008. Another four years later, she is back in a top network programming position at MTV.
During her tenures at the WB and Lifetime, Daniels has overseen the development of such series as Gilmore Girls, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek and Smallville (WB) and Army Wives and Drop Dead Diva (Lifetime). “Susanne’s delivered more breakthrough pop culture hits in one decade than most producers do in their entire lifetimes”, Toffler said. “Very few people have the talent and instincts to consistently develop shows that connect with young audiences, but Susanne has thankfully kept in perfect touch with her juvenile side and we’re extremely lucky she will now be joining our restless, creative family here at MTV.”
After riding the Jersey Shore ratings tidal wave for the past couple of years, MTV has seen its ratings decline recently. In the most recent third quarter ratings, the cable network was down 46% year-to-year in its core 18-34 demographic and 38% in total viewers.

I did not realize that Suzanne Daniels had created both Army Wives and Drop Dead Diva. What a talent! I’m sure the writers of the pilots for those series will be as impressed a I am. Good for the public to know the truth — that it’s really these groundbreaking executives that actually create the content on their networks. I’m sure JJ Abrams will tell you that it was also really Suzanne who created Felicity too.
Where does it say she created those shows? She supervised the development of them that’s what executives do they rise or fall based on the success of the shows they develop and put on the air.
Maybe this is the problem — “Susanne’s delivered more breakthrough pop culture hits in one decade than most producers do in their entire lifetimes.”
Suzanne isn’t a producer.
She has been a producer.
Suzanne Daniels was a great executive…but she must be desperate to take a job at MTV. Welcome to the revolving doors of program heads in MTV executive land. A company where the senior management ( Van Toffler and Doug Hertzog ) never take the blame. A company with amazing potential but old fashioned weak and lazy leadership . Remember the days when MTV and Comedy Central were special? Probably not as it was so long ago.
Desperate? Any clue who is married to? I really don’t think she NEEDS any job. She is a fantastic exec by the way and I applaud her for even taking the post.
This is a ridiculous comment.
What does the “M” stand for again?
I forgot.
“Mess”
Very happy for Susanne, who’s totally deserving, but MTV and all their sister networks are going down. Crashing ratings. Big layoffs and exits. Shuffling/merging departments. Canceling their tentpole shows. This is what happens when you do zero development, even less marketing, pay no real attention to social media or emerging entertainment trends and keep out-of-touch idiots in charge who spend money on themselves like it’s water. Viacom needs to shut down, fire everybody and start from scratch.
Pay “no real attention” to social media? MTV is one of the strongest social media brands on the face of the planet.
Here’s to hoping for the renewal of The Inbetweeners.
Suzanne is nice but this is another misstep for MTV.
Susanne is a great choice. Brilliant exec!
Bye Bye Janollari. Maybe Nick or Disney can use a guy who has zero clue how to market a show. Nice quote from Friedman about “Pants” being a critical success. Hello?! They canned it and then made a pathetic Franken-version called Underemployed.
This is a lame dying Network. It had managed to completely blow a built in audience of many millions by forgetting that you need to actually spend money to make money. USA showed the world; marketing marketing marketing
Hopefully she’ll be smart and bring back “Road Rules” in its original format ASAP. Would kill in the ratings. There’s a reason it lasted 13 seasons, and would bring fresh blood into “The Challenge”, which needs it.
The Inbetweeners is one of the best shows MTV has put out in a long while.
So lets go back in history she was fired at Fox, at the WB Garth Ancier protected her anf finally had to let her go and at Lifetime she never launched a show with staying power. Now thats failing up.
How on earth do these people keep getting chance after chance after failing to turn around what they have been asked to turnaround. At some point isn’t there some accountability? MTV has to be the most fucked up brand in television. You would think the top guys deserve some blame. On the other hand……Taylor Swift was great on Storytellers last night. What a great idea to choose Harvey Mudd for the concert. I can’t remember the last time I even thought about catching something on MTV.
Storytellers is on Vh1. You knew that, right?
This network is in desperate need of some fresher programming ideas than the drivel this guy authorized to be put on-air, so here’s hoping Daniels can grab the bull by the horn and offer their viewers better options and enough of the stupid reality shows.
I’m glad someone is finally commenting on the SUPER scheduling for MTV’s scripted series. Putting “Underemployed” on Tuesday at 10 with no lead-in against the biggest rated series on cable? Brilliant
Friedman should be watching his back! Talk about useless. Daniels’ new gig is a half step from running the network!
Let’s not forget that the Inbetweeners in a British show NOT an orig MTV prod!!
Biggest mistake DJ made was trusting the instincts of his dev staff. Nobody outside (or inside) the company could understand why they had so much power. And yet universally made such horrible choices. Without exception they took control of every show in production and post, thinking they knew better then the creatives they brought in. And unfortunately for DJ to listen to them – he orchestrated his own failures.
Very brilliant women! Had the oppurtunity to meet and talk with her at producers conference earlier this year. Fabulous!
Its ashame because the quality of Inbetweeners and Underemployed is there but the promotion and lack of hit shows at the moment for MTV really played a role in there failures. I don’t expect either to be renewed. On the scripted side MTV should go in the direction of Sci fi/fantasy like there current hit Teen Wolf. I also heard MTV had a SCREAM series in the works. That might be cool if done right.
AWKWARD and Teen Wolf are two of the beat young adult series on tv today on any network.
Have you folks who are surprised that execs are credited for hits totally new to the business? Have you not seen this for decades? It’s not undeserved. You can’t produce anything if an exec doesn’t put your show on the air.
Horrible choice. Having childish tantrums is not the same as “keeping in touch with her juvenile side” !
These boards are always good for some fun snark and generalizations. Perhaps Ms. Daniels has earned a shot or two in her career. At same time, MTV fans and producers should know they are getting a fierce, talented, television executive who was an all star in development and took the time to learn the currencies and languages that actually drive revenue. She can manage a staff, with wildly different point of views, encourages out of box thinking and avoids groupthink. She is a nurturing mentor who has had several former asst’s rise to prominent positions in tv. She single handily kept Buffy on track while bean counters were trying to adjust this or that. The quote was something like we have Joss and we have some time. It will be a hit. She predicted that Charmed would be a hit into face of all evidence against it.
Let’s face it haters. This is not a 900 batting avg business and one big swing can go a long way. Suzanne is passionate about tv as a medium, as a process, gets things done, encourages comradirie What else do you want? Maybe a jell doughnut.
Good luck Susanne. Well escaped David. Jersey Shore, their only hit since the Brian Graden days, remains the best show VH1 has ever developed for MTV.
i like Underemployed. it’s a shame.
