EXCLUSIVE: Nastaran Dibai has been elevated to executive producer/showrunner of Malibu Country. This is the first showrunner gig for Dibai, who had been a co-executive producer on the ABC/ABC Studios freshman comedy since after the pilot. Dibai succeeds Malibu Country creator/executive producer Kevin Abbott who left the series a month ago when he checked himself into rehab. Abbott, who also serves as an executive producer of ABC’s Last Man Standing, has just completed his treatment. He will resume his duties as an executive producer of Last Man Standing but won’t be back on Malibu Country, at least for the foreseeable future. ABC and ABC Studios had put the succession plan with Dibai in place when Abbott originally left and opted not to shake things up again on a show, which is still finding its footing. Additionally, it is unclear whether Abbott is ready to take on a full load of showrunner responsibility right away. Malibu Country is a priority for ABC after a strong premiere last Friday.
Abbott served as showrunner for most of Last Man Standing‘s first season, stepping in for creator Jack Burditt. Abbott passed on Last Man Standing showrunner duties to Tim Doyle in May to focus on Malibu Country. Doyle continues as showrunner; Abbott will serve as executive producer alongside him.
Dibai only recently started writing solo after being teamed with her husband and writing partner Jeffrey Hodes for the past two decades, until his sudden death a year ago. Her series credits include Retired At 35 and According To Jim. Dibai, repped by WME and Jamie Mandelbaum, is currently developing a comedy for ABC based on her personal experience.

Nastaran ran “Hope and Faith”.
Nasty is great. She can elevate that mediocre show.
Good for her. She’s run the room before. She knows how to do this.
This is not Nastaran’s first time as a show runner she and Jeffrey ran Hope and Faith.
And they ran Rita Rocks.
Hopefully Abbott can un-ruin Last Man Standing before its too late. Though I think its probably already too late.
Nastaran is a class act and a superb writer. The show will thrive under her leadership. Go Nasty! So proud of her!
I recommend this show to Star “Lily”, NOT Reba. It would be great if Reba went off to the sunset. Then, watch the ratings go up, up & up!
Wow. Nice.
Fantastic news! Nastaran is an amazing talent!
Quite frankly, I think Reba is a good “egg.” She can laugh at herself, because let’s face it, she is NOT unattractive, she’s in absolutely fantasic shape, and yet they had several jokes about her age etc… which were funny BECAUSE she really isn’t un-attractive or out of shape.
I really take my hat off to Reba, starring on Broadway and winning a Tony etc… Broadways didn’t “give” her these awards, she earned them.
I would love to see more of a LUCY/ETHEL bounce off with REBA/LILY, I mean why waste either of these two ladies? And then let the teenages/neighbors take the B STORYLINE.
Yes, I’m available for employment. But, I do like this sitcom, as someone else said, “it’s easy to watch.” Which makes it fun.
Asitcom Writer: I like Reba too but she has never won a Tony. But she will soon so be patient until she gets back to Broadway. It’s gonna happen.
