In a symbolic passing-of-the-baton move, less than a week after Nickelodeon‘s veteran comedy iCarly ended its five-season run, the cable network is greenlighting a spinoff series from iCarly creator Dan Schneider starring series standout Jennette McCurdy. Nickelodeon has given a 20-episode order to comedy Sam & Cat, toplined by McCurdy and her close friend Ariana Grande, co-star of another Schneider-created Nickelodeon comedy ending its run, Victorious. Both are reprising their roles in Sam & Cat, in which the feisty Sam Puckett (McCurdy) and daffy Cat Valentine (Grande) become best buddies and unlikely roommates. They love their freedom and independence but quickly realize that fun and adventure do not come cheap. Rather than get traditional after-school jobs, Sam and Cat become teen entrepreneurs by starting their own baby-sitting business. Production on the series begins in January for a 2013 premiere. “Jennette and Ariana are adored by our audience, and it’s great to unite these talented actresses in this hilarious new comedy from Dan Schneider,” said Russell Hicks, Nickelodeon’s President, Content Development and Production. “This show promises to deliver on what our audience loves most about these two favorite characters — laugh-out-loud humor and non-stop adventure, and is sure to be a compelling new chapter for our new comedic duo.”
Sam & Cat was one of two iCarly spinoff pilots Nick ordered in August, along with Gibby starring Noah Munck — also from Schneider, who is under a rich overall deal at the network. Schneider is with WME and attorney Tom Fineman. Actress-singer McCurdy is with UTA and Management 360. Fellow actress-singer Grande is with CAA and Untitled. The two recently wrapped the Nick original movie Swindle.

You hear that girls? It’s true, fun and adventure don’t come cheap. You better remember that, it’s the moral of this series. If you want fun and adventure you have to pay the price. Although I don’t see these two girls paying any real price in this show. It sounds like they will have lots of fun and hilarious adventures as part of their babysitting business.
Jesse knockoff.
Jesse is a Charles in Charge rip-off.
ANT Farm is a Victorious rip-off.
Nothing is new.
So let me get this straight, Nickelodeon is going to do an ICarly spinoff and Disney Channel a Boy Meets World spinoff?
Topanga>Sam
Has this been done before? Two characters from different successful series coming together for a new show? Fun idea. Should be done more.
Schneider pretty much got his own series cancelled, as I seriously doubt Nick would have let “Victorious” go if they didn’t have this series waiting in the wings.
Seems like a G Rated “2 Broke Girls”.
Teen Broke Girls, maybe?
Topanga got fat. Ill take Sam anyday!!!
She’s not what I’d call fat anymore, she lost a lot of that weight.
So, it’s “2 Broke Girls” for the tween set?
The fact that Michael Patrick King won’t be involved means it’s already an improvement.
Wow, this is desperate. I think they would be better off with You Can’t Do That on HDTV! I can’t get enough of those locker jokes.
Alternate title: Two Girls of Dubious Ethnicity Behaving Badly.
Both these girls, McCurdy and Grande, are more popular than the supposed stars of Icarly and Victorious. This show will be a big hit, and Nickelodeon needs it desperately.
so true
No doubt this will be a hit for Nick I just wish it wasn’t a spinoff of there already existing characters.
Anything with J Mccurdy in it I will look forward to. She did an amazing stuff in Icarly. I can only hope the writing appeals to teens and above as these girls are adults now. Both girls are great singers and actresses
WOW, What a Shocker! I really didn’t think this would get picked up!
**Sarcasm**
Typical Nickelodeon. Anyway who thought this wouldn’t have gotten picked up is clearly not the brightest bulb of the bunch. Nickelodeon will also pick up “Gibby” soon enough.
nice nipslip, jennette.
Sad.
Victorious was cancelled 2 seasons too early and iCarly was not funny for the last two seasons. I guess Nick wanted iCarly spinoff real badly and was ready to kill Victorious for it. I feel real bad about it because Victorious was funny not only to kids, but to adults as well. Nick and Disney rarely make quality funny show that appeal to people above 12.
From what I remember these are rare quality gems of last 10 years: Victorious, iCarly(first 2 seasons), Lizzy Mcquire, Even Stevens and Good Luck Charlie.
If the writing is somewhat decent…this show has big hit potential
Jennette McCurdy is adorable and super-talented, Ariana Grande the same. They took the best and most appealing characters from their respective former shows to make this one
Nick’s problem is not the quality of their shows (iCarly was still much better in its later years than what Disney spews out)…their problem is that kids are into other media and games.
All the negative comments need to go! This show is for the kids and the kids who adore Sam and Cat will Love It!!
True.
I think this is a amazing idea I love cat and Sam in their shows but together it will awesome and funny
Cool. It’s gonna be a big hit…looking forward to it…but they still shouldn’t have cancelled Victorious. It was a Good show!!!!!!
It’s a shame they cancelled Victorious, since this show would have been a perfect compliment to it. Adrianna Grande didn’t get enough screen-time on Victorious so this show would have quieted the rabid Ariannators who always blamed Victoria Justice for it. My only protest: what sane or responsible parent(s) would trust their kids to the somewhat scary Sam or the daffy Cat? Especially if Cat’s creepy (yet still unseen) brother finally shows up!
P.S. People shouldn’t be too sad that iCarly ended. 5 seasons is 2 seasons more than most Nick! shows last(like Victorious)and Miranda wanted to go college before she does anything else(like most successful in life ex-kid stars). Besides if any show goes on too long it risks having cast members get spoiled and crazy like Two& A Half Men!
CAN’T stand either of the roles these two play. Couldn’t stand iCarly either (go figure). I do think, however, that Victoria Justice would have been a better pick for the run that the twerp Miranda Cosgrove had on nick instead. Cartoon Network is kicking nicks butt in general, though (aside from ninja turtles, panda & i guess tuff puppy).
Cat yr cool
Aren’t they now too old?
pretty cool actulley. would’ve been cool to see Victorious head for the big screen for a feature film, kickstarter could been a good fit, now canceled tv shows should now take notes of Veronica Mars.
Ariana Grande is super talented, i actulley think Ariana is a better fit for April O’Neal in Teengae Mutant Ninja Turtles(heck from what i saw on IMDB, i think Nickelodeon is also helping out with it, so suprise a nick star isn’t in it).
