EXCLUSIVE: ABC has cut the order of midseason comedy series Family Tools from 13 to 10 episodes. Sources close to the network say that the decision was made for scheduling reasons as Family Tools in slated to premiere in January and air Tuesdays at 8:30 PM, bridging the two cycles of Dancing With the Stars. ABC brass estimated they only need the comedy for 10 weeks before Dancing comes back. Family Tools‘ companion in the Tuesday 8 PM hour will be fellow midseason comedy How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life). The 20th TV series started production early and has already completed its 13-episode order. It is unclear what ABC will do with the 3 extra episodes.
Meanwhile, ABC Studios-produced Family Tools started filming later, in part because of a showrunner change in August when veterans Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimiglia were brought in to replace Bobby Bowman, who developed the adaptation of the British comedy White Van Man and wrote the pilot. There had been rumors about issues on the set of the show, though ABC brass seem pleased with what they’ve seen.
Family Tools centers on Jack Shea (Kyle Bornheimer) who inherits his father’s (J.K. Simmons) handyman business after he has a heart attack. Co-starring on the show, slated to launch in January, are Edi Gathegi, Danielle Nicolet, Leah Remini and Johnny Pemberton. Sternin and Ventimiglia executive produce alongside Mark Gordon, Andrea Shay and Paul Buccieri.

Kyle Bornheimer = cancellation
You’re rude and bitter. Find a new career.
Rude and bitter? He’s found the perfect career!
heard the cast was poisonous.
Ben = never been on TV
Remake of failed UK show = cancellation
Probably so…..but Leah Reminy seals the deal for a monumental FAIL!
Weird. The last sitcom Leah Remini was on went 9 seasons, 207 eps and lives on in syndication.
Quit hating.
Bowman wrote and produced a great pilot. They should have stuck with him.
I’m actually excited about this show. The pilot was hilarious. They should take that shit show Neighbors off the air and replace it with this.
This is exactly right. Neighbors is a travesty.
They cut back the order of this but give Neighbors a back 9 and Apt 23 a second season? Come on ABC. Figure it out. Jim is right– they should give this the Neighbors spot. That show belongs on Disney Channel.
No, they need to remake ABC into a Disney Channel 2, Disney’s money makers are ESPN and Disney Channel, 57% of Disney’s profit comes from those two, NOT ABC.
ABC would be just as profitable if they would stop shoveling all the shit at them instead of the other two networks. And for the record, Monday Night Football was stolen away from ABC. Imagine if ABC had that monster hit back on the network: Monday- NFL Football; Tuesday- DWTS and CASTLE, Wednesday- DWTS:Results, Modern Family, The Middle, etc., etc. Anyhow, no way ABC can become Disney Channel 2, but the LOGO channel 2 is definitely within their striking range. They’ve got more homosexual white men and lesbians than a GLADD meeting in Maine.
Sorry, ABC LET Monday Night Football, go to ESPN why? Because it was a money loser for ABC, too much to pay. ESPN and ESPN2 get, $5.81 per subscriber per month plus another 99 cents per subscriber per month for Disney Channel ABC can only dream of that kind income. Since Disney bought ABC in ‘96 ABC’s value has dropped, while ESPN (Part of the package) has risen.
Meanwhile ALL broadcast networks are stuck in a 1950′s revenue generating system while trying to exist in a 21st century. Each year ratings go a little lower, they blame in on everything, except good shows. They have flooded the air waves with music competition shows, reality shows and CBS only knows how to clone a show, there is no originality left. It won’t matter in a few years they (broadcast networks) like Soap operas will be a distant memory. People will be watching whatever they want online from around the world. Korea is looking more and more entertaining every night, and it only takes a few clicks of the mouse and I see it beautifully on a 50” TV from dramas to comedies, AND, if you go to the right site, producers, media companies, actors, writers are compensated.
The world is changing too bad broadcast networks aren’t keeping up.
And isn’t most of that amount, ESPN?
It’s easy to point to obvious things like the cast but I’ve heard that the show is really good. The only thing that matters is what makes it to the screen.
This was my favorite pilot this year. Looking forward to the premiere. Bummer about the reduced order but scheduling is scheduling.
This show looks really funny. The pilot was great and haters should shut it. Give a chance to get in the air already. Better yet, write your own show.
Big comings and goings on the writing staff. Never good news for a show that hasn’t aired yet.
That’s because new show runners came in to a staff they didn’t hire. I would wanna bring in my own people too.
OK I’ll give it a chance but only because of Leah Remini.
Leah Remini = talentless, Kevin James carried that show.
That’s not true. That entire cast was great from Jerry Stiller to Gary Valentine to the guest stars. It was a well acted comedy. And Leah Remini is a very funny comedy actress. She was great on that show.
From what I hear, Fired Up was a good show as well, and unfairly cancelled. Never saw it, but I that’s just what I heard.
Aww, come on ABC. I’m really excited about this show – it looks hilarious, and J.K. Simmons is so good!
Pilot was really funny… looking forward to the premier!
I’ve seen future episodes of this show and am happy to say it’s easily the funniest show coming out this season. I strongly suggest watching and not judging before you’ve seen anything and I think all you doubters will be happily surprised.
Gee, do you work for ABC?
When did we all become such jerks.. This is a super funny show, Kyle, Leah and JK are awesome. Give it a shot people. ABC is obviously sucking in their choices – maybe they can lock a new comedy down with this smart, fun, laugh out loud funny one.
i’m sorry but as funny as jk is, he was wasted on this pilot — shocked at how not funny it was
not surprised it’s not going anywhere
What part of 10 episodes on air “isn’t going anywhere.” Probably going further than anything you’ve written dear bitter “comedy writer”.
This show is awesome. Can’t wait to hear what you all think once it premieres. Great cast!!!
Booooo! ABC sucks for cutting the order. Hopefully it will be renewed. I’m really looking forward to this show. It does seem more Raising Hope than White Van Man, though.
I’m a little afraid to post on this site because there are so many industry snobs out there and I’m not in the business so my opinion automatically doesn’t count…that being said, I actually find The Neighbors to be quite the surprise…is it gonna win any industry accolades, no, but it is the one comedy that actually makes me laugh out loud (unlike other lauded shows like Modern Family or The Big Bang Theory)…an I’m quite the tv snob… I’ll give Family Tools a shot because you never know until you try, here’s hoping its good
I agree The Neighbors is hilarious. I have laughed out loud in every single episode. That being said, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory are both great as well. Last week, I think I laughed every single time Jim Parsons opened his mouth. He is hysterical.
Gee, are you a writer who had your pitch passed on this year? I’m so sawwwy for you.
Kyle Bornheimer and Josh Cook. 2 guys who always get shows. Two guys that America does not find funny. Networks, it’s time to stop recycling. Have you ever thought that when a series is not being watched by audiences, maybe the stars just aren’t likable? Yet you cast the same leading actors again because they are on some sort of “safe” list? Forget safe, look around you. Who is funny and underused? Who do you know that is amazingly likable and funny and can act? Maybe you know them…but America does not. Take a risk Networks. Cast someone that has never been on a show before. It will work.
sounds like steven is a bitter actor who hasn’t been able to book. you are dead wrong on bornheimer who is hilarious and nails the funny, relatable, likable everyman thing perfectly. he guy elevates every project he is in which is why he is always working. have you even seen “Worst Week”? that was one of the most under-rated shows on TV and he killed in it.
The pilot was awesome and family tools is going to be fabulous. Funny and heartwarming. Great new comedy. Usually shows that have a few hiccups at the beginning end up being the most successful. The scheduling decisions are not a reflection on the show. Just midseason juggling.
The only reason why I would even sample this series is because of Leah Remini. I’ve been waiting for her to do another sitcom for years.
