EXCLUSIVE: Starz has closed a deal to develop Outlander, a drama series based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling fantasy/romance/adventure series of books. Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore will write the series adaptation, with Jim Kohlberg’s Story Mining and Supply Co producing. Sony Pictures TV is behind the project after acquiring rights to the books in the summer and attaching Moore, who is under an overall deal at the studio, to develop and write a series targeted for cable networks.
Outlander spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure. It follows Claire, a married WWII combat nurse, who mistakenly steps back in time to year 1743 where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world of adventure that sends her on the run and threatens her life. When Claire is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, it ignites a passionate affair that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
Outlander is the latest Starz drama project set centuries in the past, along with hit Spartacus and the upcoming Da Vinci’s Demons, Black Sails, Marco Polo and The White Queen.
The seven-book Outlander series has sold over 20 million copies. An eighth novel is slated to come out next year. The books have developed passionate fan following, with multiple companies running “Jamie and Claire” tours of Scotland, where they visit locations from the books.
Star Trek veteran Moore, repped by CAA, started his writing career on Next Generation and also spent five years on Deep Space Nine. He then served as co-executive producer/co-showrunner on the WB’s Roswell and as executive producer/showrunner on HBO’s Carnivale before segueing to Battlestar Galactica.

Totally unreadable tripe. Disappointing to see Moore follow a trend rather than set one.
Vanilla…20 million copies of the books sold, you just might be in the minority with your angry opinion.
“Totally unreadable tripe”? It would seem that over 20 million readers disagree with you.
LOL, Rose, I’m with you on that one. Silly woman, what’s she doing here anyway
I have actually bought all the “new” versions of the books and the companions also.
I would love to go on one of those “Outlander Guided Tours” in Scotland myself!
Kat
I have all the Outlander series of books and have read them. They are wonderful, compelling reading. Anyone who calls them “tripe” should move on to something less challenging for them. I too, would love to be on one of those “Outlander Guided Tours”.
Thank you Diana!
Olivia
Amen! “Less challenging ” lmao!
Not only do I collect each of these in hardback but I have read all of these books numerous times – in fact each time a new one is set to come out I go back and reread them. I am now on book four and can’t wait for number 8
Diana Gabaldon is a masterful and brilliant craftswoman who has managed to speak to the heart of millions who have been drawn into her epic historical, romantic adventure. The books, and incredibly addictive recordings of her books performed by the talented Davina Porter have ignited an even more intensly anticipated on screen visual of the story of Jamie and Clair. Is there any further update as to when we will finally be satiated?
As for poor Vanilla, his unreadable comment can only refer to his sad state of illiteracy.
I read all seven books while going through chemo, and it was the best to lose myself from my surroundings. I have purchased them all in hardback, then repurchased them all on my Kindle, and have read all their companions. I have recently started rereading them again from the beginning. I would love to go on the guided tour as well. I am impatiently awaiting to see the miniseries!!
Wow, you haven’t read the series, have you? Shame. You should. Keep your angry opinions to yourself, arse.
Vanilla- how did you even find yourself on this website? You probably called the books unreadable because you couldn’t grammatically comprehend the first chapter!!
Which is complete proof you never read it.
You probably haven’t even read it. Diana Gabaldon is a brilliant writer; I find that most of her readers are among the most well-read and best-educated.
Unreadable tripe? Well if it’s unreadable, you obviously haven’t read it. That pretty much means you’re not one of the 20 million readers who just wet their pants reading this announcement.
@OutlanderFan, LOL..but so true..I have been waiting so long for this or a movie. Kinda glad they went with a series though. So much to tell for a movie. Can’t wait.
A series and not a movie!! Yay!! I thought they did a good job with Pillars of the earth!
Except Pillars was way to edited down towards the end…
I too think they did a pretty good job with Pillars of the Earth. It is tough for the screen to capture all that the author gives to the reader. Perception is different for everyone including the director and producer. I now have more to look forward to, seeing my best friends on the big screen will be wonderful and a continuing of my favorite story!
“Pillars of the Earth” was great – as was the follow-up “World Without End.” Televised historical novels at their best. Can’t wait for the Outlander series to hit the screen – well, I don’t really have a choice, do I?
If I didn’t wet my pants at the announcement, I certainly did when I read your comment!
Verra much looking forward to the series!
Please God – let it be with real Scottish accents, not Brigadoon style or Star Trek’s Scotty.
Yes! I don’t like accents that are not authentic! Of course finding an actor who really looks like Jamie Fraser may be difficult.
I’m sooo excited. I’ve read every book, they’re awesome !. I can’t wait for the series, and I totally agree, they have to be real Scotts !!!! ..
Tommi
To outlander fan:
drip…drip…mad dash to loo: oops, didn’t make it.
You are so very correct.
out of all the comments on here, yours is by far the most correct! lol, wet our pants at the article, yeah, totally!!! I can’t freaking wait for the series and I am only on book 1! I just hope to get to book 8 before it starts because I don’t think I will be able to stop myself from looking at it!
Fortunately, there are millions who would disagree with your unfounded and terse assessment of a well-written and witty treasure of literature such as this series.
Actually well researched and exciting escapism for people with some historical knowledge and interests and imagination. I am a Scot and hyper critical about books based in Scotland usually full of mis-information – there are millions of people enjoying these – shame you can’t find the pleasure!
As an avid reader, I was skeptical when a co-worker brought in the first book for me to “try”. Since then I have read through this “tripe” multiple times and have gotten numerous others hooked with just a nudge to get them going. It is hands down, the best written, researched and true-to-life story of this genre. I have a 20th Anniversary autographed edition. And I can’t wait to see this brought to life.
My daughter and my daughter-in-law are both huge fans and have read the entire Outlander series several times, and will read them again in preparation for the 8th book! Knowing that I am an avid reader and love historical romances, especially ones set in Scotland, my daughter has been trying to get me to read them for years. I kept saying that I wasn’t interested in reading them because they involved time travel, but finally I relented and read the 1st book…then I was absolutely hooked! I fell in love with Jamey, and I wanted to “be” Claire! My heart breaks to think that their story will end!
I was also skeptical when my mother gave me the first book. She said , “Give it a try”. Glad I listened for once!
Look forward to the series and the next book! (I love men in kilts! Nothing sexier!)
You’re speaking as one who has obviously never read this series! This is magnificent story-telling wrapped around a riveting cast of unforgettable characters! Whew! Coming up with that many adjectives just about took it all out of me but every word is TRUE!! I, and a few million others, cannot wait for this show to be aired…
Tripe? Actually, Gabaldon’s works are well-written with much historical research accompanying them. I’ll go off into the 1700s with Gabaldon’s characters anyday….and frequently do.
Vanilla if you call this unreadable tripe – what do you call Battlestar Galactica – Star Wars etc.??? Intellectual reading and viewing?
As an avid reader of all types of literary work, I found the Outlander series to be brilliantly executed, historically accurate and deliciously detailed… but one would have to actually read the series to know this, and anyone who calls it “tripe” is obviously not one of these. Even if you disliked the series, there is no one who could argue the rich tapestry of characters and locales, bringing to life the sights and smells of history. The Outlander series spans several genres, and the only trepidation I feel when reading about the series reproduced on the screen is that there will be no way to translate it so vividly – and will most certainly fall short of the written work.
I agree one hundred percent! Diana Gabaldon’s work doesn’t even fit into the same genre as most romantic drivel. It far and away surpasses the work of any other “romance” novelist out there. I also loved George R.R. Martin’s “Fire and Ice” series, from which “Game of Thones” on HBO was derived. I hope Starz does “Outlander” better credit than HBO did with “Game of Thrones.” It became about nothing more than the sex, with pale attention given to the actual story lines.
Yes! I agree 100%
I agree with Lisa Preston, These books are so well written. Like Lisa said, “brilliantly executed, historically accurate and deliciously detailed” (I couldn’t agree more) Many of us are so very attached already to the amazing characters Diana Gabaldon has created. There are millions of fans that know every quirk, every nuance of not only the main characters, but every character and story line these books hold. I am very excited for this series to start on Starz. I do hope every person working on this series has read or reads the books first. And that the casting and the story lines stick to the amazing books.
I guess this person reads so much “tripe” they can’t tell a good story from a bad one. I read Dragonfly in amber first, and did not realize it was only one of a series. I got the first book and now I have all of them. I love Diana, she tells a hell of a story and keeps you hooked. For the haters, go sit on a NAIL!!
as a male, i have read all the books more than once and can’t wait for the new one to come out…whats going on in that tunnel???
Now who will play Jamie….gotta be beleiveable
@ Vanilla Gorilla – sorry, but 20 million fans can’t be wrong.
wash yer mouth out wi soap ya wee nyaff ye! widna ken a guid story if it battered ye aff the brew……..
Ann Cain, Loved your response, almost as good as the books themselves!
That just made me laugh out loud.
LOL when I read this! Soooo much better than saying what crass ignorant people say! I am delighted that Outlander will be aired on Starz and someone should organize a trip from the USA to tour Scotland as lovers of Jamie and Claire. I’m game next year. I can’t do it this year, because I’m going to Israel this year.
Wow, you really have no idea what good literature is do you? Sounds to me like you have no imagination or passion and must be a complete joke.
Unreadable, huh? You have a reading problem? I know I and millions of others (including my VERY well educated counselor – a LCSW) enjoy them immensely. Get a life and don’t criticize what you know nothing about.
If you think this is tripe, there isn’t a romantic bone in your body. And if you can’t read it; get an English teacher
Unreadable Tripe, I have to wonder if you say this because you have actually read it, or if you too are doing what you accuse Moore of, “…follow a trend rather than set one”. The trend these days certainly seems to be criticize what the masses like simply ‘to be different’ instead of because you have a reason. How about some specifics? What didn’t you like? It is so easy to label things, but providing reasons is another story. Set a trend of your own.
Vanilla-
Found the series a little to intelligent and challenging to comprehend did we??? Poor thing…
loved your response uglyduckie! Hate that we’ve all given vanilla gorilla so much attention.
I was just going to say the same thing! That Vanilla person have a reading disability , cannot concentrate , follow the characters , used to watching reality shows. I have picked up Outlander with skeptisism Time Traveler being a little iffy, but I read the jackets story line and tooka chance. I loved it! I have read all the book that are in print and now checking to see if there are anymore books in print.I have learned so much about Scottish History ,and now interested in American history of that period. Thank you Diana!
Vanilla Gorilla – It’s very obvious you have not read any of the books.
Thanks Deadline Hollywood … you’ve made my day with this news! I predict this will be a smash!
You really haven’t read the series, have you?
Oops ! Your ignorance is showing !
Oh hell no Vanilla!
Diana Gabaldon’s writting is the best I have EVER READ.
You likely have never even read one chapter of any of her novels.
A lot of research and imagination goes into each and every one.
I find my self re reading her books because other authors don’t cut it for me.
Me too! I’m reading them for the third time because I tried getting into other series’ and they were all a let down! Can’t wait til the next book comes out and I wish I still had cable so I could watch the series! I hope they put it out on Netflix or DVD some day so I can see it!
guys, we are 20 million people who bought the books. And we all agree that Diana Gabaldon is a fantastic author, one of the best actually. So far only Vanilla doesn’t agree with us. I rest my case.
I have read this series over and over again, I even have it on audible, I don’t think I can even tell you how many times I have listened to it. Congrats Diana, there are those of us who adore you!
You’re an idiot, which I’m sure Ron Moore would agree. The Outlander prose is first rate, the story is original, and 20 million people bought the books. Apparently Ron Moore, who we all agree is a genius, knows what he’s doing. You obviously don’t think before you post.
I can hardly stand it. I am waiting oh so impatiently for the next book… and the idea that I will be able to see the characters with my own two peepers!!!
Vanilla, you amaze me with your Ignorance!
You really have not read much if any of the books. They are very well written and cover several genres and give an excellent history lesson within the telling of the tale.
I have all 7 books and I have read them all 3 times. Each time is like the first, entertaining, up-lifting, magical and I CANNOT wait to see this series. What a love story and hope they pick the right actors to play the parts.
Come on, people. Vanilla can hate it all he wants. It doesn’t mean he or she hasn’t read it or is stupid or anything. I personally never got into Outlander. I tried, but it wasn’t for me, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
I must admit that it took me some time to “get into” Outlander. Once Clair traveled through the stones though, the adventure truly never stopped for me. I fell in love with Jamie, admired Clair and have spent hours of rapturous reading. I’m shamelessly hooked!
WHAT A COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOT.HOW CAN SOMEBODY MAKE SUCH AN EMPTY REMARK ABOUT A BRILLIANT AUTHOR’S WORK. YOUR NOT FIT TO CLEAN HER SHOES.
DON’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS. It’s very rude. And it’s quite obvious “Vanilla” is just a troll looking to stimulate exactly the reaction that he/she got. Remember the rule “Don’t feed the trolls” . These visceral reactions are exactly what trolls look for.
This is an exceedingly bad idea ! The minute detail and nuanced
dialogue is impossible to honor properly. You know the males will all wear hideous hair weaves and use moronic accents in a hopeless attempt to sound ‘authentic Scots’ while fulfilling the necessary demand for ‘american English’.The women will all be toothless hags or have their tits hanging out over their ripped bodices. Just the logistics of doing Gabaldon’s work justice is not possible. Some things should be left in their original state, imo.
Tam 2128, way too funny! You probably have a point, but for us closet Outlander Junkies, we really don’t care. I’ts a bit like Harry Potter; once reading the books, you just aren’t willing to let the magic end. Besides, we need a fix while waiting for the next book to come out. And Nora, you are completely right. Nothing more fun for bored people than to instigate an irate crowd.
20 million readers can’t be wrong. Have you actually read these novels? Somehow I doubt it.
Outlander is anything but tripe! It is full of amaizing characters that actually act like real human beings and spans all types of fiction. The TV series can’t hope to stand up to the book but Starz has the best chance of anyone (other than HBO of course)
Silly iconoclast. May the women that revere Jamie cast the 9 of diamonds curse upon your house.
I have trouble reading them too; try the audiobooks as read by Davina Porter, they will sweep you away. I am now a huge fan!
Lee, LOVE Davina Porter’s reading of all the books. I can listen to them over and over. i am so looking forward to the series!
ROFLMAO. Good one, Vanilla.
Vanilla’s a shill. Bet my next paycheck.
Definitely far from “tripe”. I bet Vanilla did not read this and only made the comment because these books are found under the “Romance” category in bookstores. It drives me crazy because these books are far from the sappy Danielle Steele type of Romance Novels. The Outlander series should be listed under historical fiction because there is so much knowledge to be gained by reading these books. Plus, the story lines are nothing less than AMAZING! Can’t wait for the next book and to see who gets casted as Jamie and Claire in the series.
Vanilla gave away her/his IQ and lost a few points in the process!
Seriously? You’ve read it all? To each his own. I find the characters and The story fascinating. You know there are 7 book written all at about 1,000 pages a piece? I’m not a fan of book two but love books 4 and five. That’s too bad, I’m always excited for someone new to discover this book series.
Love the series and all related books by DG. I’m terribly excited about the series and hope very much that the episodes/cast does justice to these remarkable and engaging books!
As if it’s not plainly obvious…..Vanilla’s comment is that of a complete “lack-wit lick spittle.” (GRRM) Anyone with half a brain and an ounce of good taste who’s read the series knows as much.
Actually, it’s not. Assuming because the storyline is unusual doesn’t make you cool. I tell everyone the plot, tell them it’s not as ridiculous as it seems and EVERYONE male and female falls in love with the books. Sometimes people actually can write.
Is this for a pilot or series?
Squeeeeeeeeee! As a huge fan of the book series, I am looking forward to seeing Jamie and Claire come to life. I just hope that the correct actors are cast for the main roles!
The only thing I see that would ruin this series is casting the wrong person for Jamie. He has to be the perfect fit for such a wonderful character.
These are beloved books with a strong and diverse following. I do hope Mr. Moore will read them before he accepts any scripts!
Actually (according to DG) Mr. Moore has read ALL the books including the graphic novel Exile. Also, he will be writing for the series and has spent a weekend with DG discussing all sorts of stuff regarding how to handle the adaptation. You can read about it on her website.
“Unreadable tripe” And yet over 20 million copies have been sold! I am very much looking forward to this becoming a series.
As one of the 20 Million who love Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series, I am excited beyond belief to see this happening! The series is quite unique and has many twists and turns, along with vibrant characters and settings. It will be a joy to see it on any size screen.
Best books ever..hands down..will be interested to see who they cast in the leads..:)
Diana Gabaldon’s book are wonderful-NOT-”unreadable tripe”.
Seriously? Unreadble tripe? It is one thing if the style or genre is not your thing, but these books are very well written. My guess is you have not even read half of one. What would you consider a good book? Spiderman comics? Our maybe
Squeeeeee!!! Love these novels!!! Can’t wait to see this!!!
Yipee! Can’t wait. Hope it’s half as good as the books!
I read the series every year. Can’t wait for the next book and am looking forward to the movie!!
I hope to GOD that these people do a decent job of adapting the series. I am not a fan of any of the shows listed, because they all pretty much suck. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give the project a decent budget and cast, and treat it with the respect it deserves. There are millions of dedicated fans who have been eagerly awaiting this outcome. Please don’t let us down!!!
Star Trek: The Next Generation & Deep Space Nine…sucked? You have great taste in books but are sincerely lacking in the science fiction department!
I concur!! OMG, Battlestar and Star Trek series take a huge amount of creativity and finesse to produce!! All I can say is “sorry” for anyone who never watched either.
Carnivale and Battlestar Galactica were excellent and critically acclaimed as well.
Shari, She’s probably a kid and therefore has no taste in Sci-Fi anyway, lol.
Kat.
Amen to that!
Moore could set a trend by sticking to the authenticity of this series. Gabaldon signed off on writing the scripts so it’s in his hands to interpret the story and all the historical facts. This could be epic if there is enough money to back it up. Otherwise, it could turn to tripe if it goes cheap and Jamie and Claire, the main characters, are complete unknowns. Jamie is a man’s man and every woman’s dream. Actors capable of carrying these roles are on the big screen and unlikely to commit to a long term series deal. I wish Moore all the luck in the world but I will stick to the novels if Jamie and Claire aren’t cast well!
I cant wait for Ron to start this project. It will be sensational!
These are phenomenal books written by an incredibly intelligent and erudite author. I am hopeful that the series adaptation will be even half as good as the novels.
FINALLY! Please, oh, please do this amazing series justice!
YES! Such an amazing series, cannot wait to watch this!
this is so so exciting! the series is by far the most awesome i have ever read! Please please make the series come to NZ!
I will be certain to have Starz by the time the first segment is ready. Can’t wait!
Yummm, tripe! There has never been a more readable enjoyable series! I have loved these characters for years and cannot wait to see the vision of the series in television format. Moore has his work cut out for him, holding true to a vision we all love and enjoy. I for one am thrilled!
Well Vanilla Gorilla, it would appear that 20 million people disagree with you. You sound like such a cheerful person!!
Can’t wait! It will be like visiting with old friends with Jamie and Claire in my living room. Hope the set design, accents, and wardrobe do the book justice.
Wow! I was wondering how they would fit all of it into a movie format, but a mini-series format is perfect! I hope they cast some awesome people for the parts, and that they really stick to the story… it has enough sex, without being over-sexed like a lot of the current mini-dramas.
This is going to be a TV series, not a mini series.
Love these books and hope that they get it right!! and “Vanilla Gorilla” – have you actually read these books? Maybe they aren’t your style, but “tripe”…really?
Actually, this book series will make great TV. Much better than a feature movie and certainly NOT tripe either as another posted.
