EXCLUSIVE: Starz has closed a deal to develop Outlander, a drama series based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling fantasy/romance/adventure series of books. Battlestar Galactica developer/executive producer Ron Moore will write the series adaptation, with Jim Kohlberg’s Story Mining and Supply Co producing. Sony Pictures TV is behind the project after acquiring rights to the books in the summer and attaching Moore, who is under an overall deal at the studio, to develop and write a series targeted for cable networks.
Outlander spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history, and adventure. It follows Claire, a married WWII combat nurse, who mistakenly steps back in time to year 1743 where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world of adventure that sends her on the run and threatens her life. When Claire is forced to marry Jamie, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, it ignites a passionate affair that tears Claire’s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
Outlander is the latest Starz drama project set centuries in the past, along with hit Spartacus and the upcoming Da Vinci’s Demons, Black Sails, Marco Polo and The White Queen.
The seven-book Outlander series has sold over 20 million copies. An eighth novel is slated to come out next year. The books have developed passionate fan following, with multiple companies running “Jamie and Claire” tours of Scotland, where they visit locations from the books.
Star Trek veteran Moore, repped by CAA, started his writing career on Next Generation and also spent five years on Deep Space Nine. He then served as co-executive producer/co-showrunner on the WB’s Roswell and as executive producer/showrunner on HBO’s Carnivale before segueing to Battlestar Galactica.

Wow, it must be nice, Vanilla Gorilla, to be sooooo intellectually superior to the millions of people who have read, and enjoyed, this series! I’m just glad I’m stupid enough to find the series entertaining rather than being too smart to enjoy it.
Unreadable tripe? Since you’ve found it to be unreadable I will assume that you haven’t read the series, therefore I wonder how you can form a fair opinion of Diana Gabaldon’s work.
totally love the books and really love Ron Moore’s work i think it will be a great combination
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Love the books and look forward to seeing it filmed! Well done Diana!
Many of us are greatful and very excited about Outlander finly on film!!! YEA!!!!!
Finally! I’ve read and re read the series and finally it makes it to screen.
Please, please, please stay true to character’s physical appearance! It is a crucial factor in Gabaldon fans decision to watch the series. I am so excited, but will not watch if characters are not selected with GREAT CARE! I am also a Lee Childs fan, but will NOT be watching Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in the movie-it’s just too much of a stretch.
As long as Jamie as cast as written – large and red headed.
Can’t wait to see this! I’ve read and followed the whole series. I just hope it lives up to the book’s level!
Yes! Yes! Yes! Anyone that leaves a negative comment are ignorant because they obviously have not read the series. Read it and you will eat your words! I hope they do a really good job in matching the actors with the characters. Diana Gabaldon is extremely detailed so we all have a good picture in our head on what they look like. Really exciting news!
I just hope to goodness the stick to the story, I shudder to think of a butcher job with a Hollywood pretty boy playing Jamie and some bimbo playing Claire……Roswell was great for a season until it turned weird…as have most series done recently. These books have a huge fanbase who would get very very upset if this is going to be done badly!
This makes my heart race!!! So so excited
I checked this out from the library. Skipped whole sections of the “unreadable tripe” and thanked my lucky stars I didn’t spend money on the book. Will the series leave out the gay s&m porn?
The “gay s&m porn”, as you put it, is integral to the story and how it affects the rest of Jamie’s life and relationships. It’s a fact of life. There are people out there who are nasty enough to enjoy inflicting that kind of pain and power over people. And some happen to be gay. If you read it in context and stop judging, you’ll see that it’s not gratuitous. It’s just part of the story.
HMMMM “unreadable tripe”….I would really hate to see what you consider readable… I’m looking forward to seeing the completions of this project.. I really hope the 20 million plus fans are not disappointed.
Unreadable tripe? Obviously you’ve never read them!
I am very excited about this news. Hopefully they will remain true to the books and cast correctly!
Fantastic! I can’t believe that these breathtaking novels will finally be adapted for screen. I can’t wait!
I remember a couple of months ago that this project was set up at SYFY. Did SYFY give it a pass considering that most of their scripted fare is Light.
A historical romance would be very unusual for SyFy, and it sounds like an expensive production that Starz would be better able to handle.
Super EXCITED!!!!!!!! Diana is a great writer and to see her novels come to life, it’s an awesome treat!!!!!!! YEY!!!!!!!!
Yay! I am SO excited!! I can’t wait. Looks like I’ll be ordering Starz! PLEASE cast this right. PLEASe don’t mess with the story a ton. It’s good on it’s own.
I have just finished the 7th book and I feel like I have new family members….I can’t wait for the 8th one to come out. I like everyone else hope that the series does the books justus!!! Can’t Wait !
“unreadable tripe”? I’d be interested to know what you read?
Please take some time with the casting. It would ruin it for so many people if the wrong actors were put into starring roles……ie: Kristen Stewart would be a disaster for Claire.
Kristen Stewart? Oh my God, no.
One actress who comes to mind is Jessica Brown Findlay, who just left Downton Abbey. She is a bit young, but could play older at least as Young Claire.
Jessica has a lot of versatility. She has played modern characters as well as period ones. I definitely think she could do Feisty Nurse and go back and forth between periods on the show. Very beautiful as well but just a bit offbeat.
The only thing is she got restless on Downton and might not want to tie herself to a long-running series.
Tripe???
Well with all alacrity…..yippeee
yyyaaayyyy sooo happy, favorite books of all time but please please please get the casting right xx
