EXCLUSIVE: After directing Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher, Christopher McQuarrie is poised to take on the next installment of Cruise’s signature tentpole. I’m told that McQuarrie is the choice to helm the fifth Mission: Impossible film that is in the early stages of being put together by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions. They will hire writers before making it official, but he’s the guy that Cruise and JJ Abrams want.
M:I-5 is a big priority for the studio after the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol grossed just under $700 million worldwide. McQuarrie, who won the Oscar for scripting The Usual Suspects, has more recently become Cruise’s go-to guy as a writer. After collaborating with Cruise on Valkyrie, McQuarrie has had a credited or uncredited hand in most of Cruise’s recent films including All You Need Is Kill, Ghost Protocol (uncredited), and the Top Gun 2 film which is in limbo after the death of director Tony Scott. Paramount and Skydance also have McQuarrie developing to direct Without Remorse, the action thriller based on the Tom Clancy novel.
The Mission: Impossible opportunity comes off the excitement that Paramount and Skydance are experiencing over Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie directed after adapting the script from the Lee Child novel One Shot. Cruise plays the title character, who in the books is a hulking former military cop who drifts around the country and always ends up unraveling conspiracies with his intellect and oversized fists. While Cruise doesn’t match Reacher’s size, the author was the one who felt most strongly that Cruise was the right guy for the job. After seeing Cruise’s work playing killers in Ghost Protocol and Michael Mann’s Collateral, I don’t doubt Child’s judgment. Paramount and Skydance are hoping it leads to another franchise. The film opens December 21. McQuarrie’s repped by CAA, Key Creatives and attorney David Fox.
Here’s a trailer for Jack Reacher:

This will probably make a fortune.
For those who are fans of the books, this looks and feels nothing like Jack Reacher. Having read ALL the books except the most recent (holding out as a protest)…this is depressing. Nothing against Tom Cruise…but neither he nor this film are Jack Reacher.
I guess the author of the books — who knows best, by the way — disagrees.
Hey Chad,
The author (Lee Childs pen name) is taking the money and running. Who wouldn’t want Tom Cruise?
That being said, Lee Child is being dishonest to the Jack Reacher character in so many ways…show Lee the money…not the character he truly created. Just read the books and tell me you believe this trailer, this character and this star have anything to do with Jack Reacher?
That is a rhetorical question…you can’t.
Just move on. What are you worrying about. it’s just a movie, not a biography.
Hey Anonymous,
And in the movie world in which you reside…Brad Pitt could be Bilbo Baggins. Have you even read a Jack Reacher novel? Doubt it…
FTCS:
Lee Childs has made tens of millions of dollars off of the novels alone. The guy had more money than he could possibly spend well before this deal came together. You don’t like the casting, fine, don’t see the movie. But you are dead wrong about Childs motivation on this. He really believes Tom is the best choice to play Reacher in the film. Sorry if you can’t accept that, but it’s true.
and the movie James Bonds are the novel’s James Bond??
I thought the movie was excellent:suspenseful, no gratuituous violence, fast-paced, gritty, and showed an edgy Cruise with a darker persona and an aura of unpredictably and intense, rather alarmy precision which showed meticulous research.
This is quite rare, and rather admirable, but certainly made the predictable physical expectation somewhat of an afterthought, story-wise:the hulk was in the gaze, not the grip, and it required no “bustin’ out”, as Rick James would say….smile.
Yeah, this holds until “Jack Reacher” bombs. Because who the heck wants to pay money to see angry, crazy Cruise when they can just read about it in the papers or watch it on the news? Most Generic Trailer Ever.
Cruise headlined movies always makes money, do you define “bomb” as not make more than x3 the money?
why wouldn’t they ask Bird to direct MI5?
Because Bird should be directing the new STAR WARS! Get on that, Disney.
Is it possible that Brad might be occupied on another, recently-announced, BIG franchise picture? Hmmm…
Rumor has it that Bird didn’t have much to do with MI4′s success. In fact, he was very much out of his element and it was the technical team that pulled him through.
I hope the movie is nothing like that god awful trailer…
Billyboy – angry, crazy Cruise happened several years ago. Give the guy a break. You have a setback and some people never forget no matter how well you recover afterward.
McQuarrie is one cool cat. He’s a nice guy and deserves all of his successes. Great to see him so busy.
I thought Josh Olson did a draft of this? I guess it got completely tossed out if he didn’t at least share credit.
Just because he didn’t get a writing credit doesn’t mean his draft was tossed out. It just means the final script didn’t have a certain percentage of his version in it. Loads of writers make great living and never get writing credit on the movies they rewrite.
Tom and Chris are a fantastic combo, you will all be amazed by JACK REACHER. I believe another great writer said it best…
Ken Follett ?@KMFollett – 10/29
Skyfall is great but not as good as Jack Reacher.
Why would they hire someone else to write the script other than him? He is an Academy Award winning writer who is one of the best writers working today evidenced by the fact they keep going to him for him to write their films.
Would have loved if Brad Bird came back but Chris McQuairre aint such a bad choice either. Apparently he’s done a great job with Jack Reacher movie.
