BREAKING: Paramount Pictures will release the first 9-minutes from J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness on 500 IMAX 3D screens beginning December 14 on runs of the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit. That’s way before the film’s release next May. It is the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the third time a first-look will be released in IMAX.
“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”
The film used IMAX cameras to capture several sequences. Exclusively in IMAX theaters, sequences filmed with the extremely high-resolution cameras will expand to fill more of the screen with unprecedented crispness and clarity, putting moviegoers right into the explosive action and vast scope of the film.
Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci wrote the script and Abrams directed the film and produced with those guys through Bad Robot.

I don’t understand how this is going to work. It’s not a trailer attached to any particular film?
It’s like a featurette shown before the feature in all IMAX theatres, or just some?
Or is it, god forbid, going to require a separate admission? I still haven’t gotten over paying $18 to see Skyfall, which was sort of worth it to some, not so much to others.
The article said it would be played alongside The Hobbit.
Says in the article that it’s attached to The Hobbit. It will be like the Dark Knight Rises prologue that was attached to Ghost Protocol.
on 500 IMAX 3D screens beginning December 14 on runs of the Peter Jackson-directed The Hobbit.
Guess what, even if they did charge a separate admission, nobody’s forcing you to see those nine minutes. Not even your friends who apparently put up with you sucking the joy out of every moviegoing experience.
hallelujer!!!!!!!!!
What about Regal RPX? No IMAX near is getting Hobbit, only Regal.
Everywhere else “The Hobbitch” is playing will have the STID teaser-trailer. And for s teaser it is PACKED with some awesome visuals. …long time until 17 May 2013.
Man I wish Paramount had not made them go 3D with this. Would love to have been able to see this in beautiful IMAX 2D, especially since it was filmed that way. Shame. 3D sucks.
The article says it will play on 500 screens before “The Hobbit”.
This is awesome.
If you read the prologue is only showing along side IMAX 3D showings of The Hobbit, so don’t go to an IMAX 2D showing expecting to see it.
I didn’t want to see the Hobbit. Now, I probably will have to, lol. Jackson, you crafty devil!
When and where, JJ? I’ll be there.
Very excited.
I only want to know, could I see this in Taiwan’s theater?
Too bad that like Mission Impossible 4, it’ll once again be a lie on my theater. The only IMAX they’ve shown on film since May was Dark Knight Rises, which Nolan wisely required of all able theaters.
4K digital is not IMAX. It’s just a really big screen
Then we’ll deal with the awfulness that is JJTrek
4K digital is not “a really big screen,” it’s a movie that’s been shot at 48 frames per second, not the usual 24 frames per second, making for a much clearer, cleaner picture
Exciting — but can we see a TRAILER already? Jeez. C’mon J.J., we’re all for anticipation but it’s time!
I saw a couple of negative comments. It worked for dark knight rises! The preview is great, Its more about giving a little to fans. Seeing there favourite characters, ship and story in a new format is a great gift!
RPX is a pale copy of IMAX.
Cool, really looking forward to this one.
Really enjoyed the last as long time Trek fan.
I thought SKYFALL was worth every penny.
