More bad news for a venerable ABC music awards show franchise. Following the all-time lows in adults 18-49 and total viewers for the Country Music Awards earlier this month, the American Music Awards last night (3.4/8 in 18-49, 9.47 million total viewers) also hit all-time lows in both categories. In 18-49, the awards show was down 21% from last year. On the bright side for ABC, the network hit Sunday season highs and its veteran America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.7/5) at 7 PM jumped 21% from last week to match its season high. That was despite facing another big NFL overrun, this time on CBS. The doubleheader pushed CBS’ primetime to a 7:53 PM start, scrambling the network’s fast national results. By eyeballing the numbers, The Amazing Race and The Good Wife appear on par or slightly down from the previous week.
NBC once again won the night with Sunday Night Football. But the Ravens-Steelers game, which drew a 12.2/19 in the metered-market households, was down 11% from last week.
Most Fox comedies were down double-digits from last week when the network’s Sunday lineup was buoyed by a football doubleheader. The Simpsons (2.5/6) was down 22% from last Sunday and a tenth from its last telecast without a doubleheader two weeks ago. Similarly, Bob’s Burgers (1.8/4) was down 25% from last week and flat with two weeks ago, and Family Guy (2.5/6) was down 7% from last week’s 200th episode and flat with two weeks ago. Of the two Fox animated comedies that didn’t air originals last Sunday, The Cleveland Show (1.6/4) was down 16% from its last outing two weeks ago, while American Dad (2.0/5) was up 11%.

The AMA isn’t a real award…
The only people who respect it are those who give it out and those who receive it.
It’s like a Golden Globe.
Golden Globes might as well be the Nobel prizes compared to the AMAs. Still fun to watch some of the performances. That’s what it’s all about.
The golden globes are more respected than the AMA’s, so the AMAs are a step down.
With Justin Bieber being the big winner, the headline of this story has a double meaning, doesn’t it?
Hahaahhahahaa
Well played. Well played.
The highlight of the AMA was the 1989 clip of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince performing onstage. Brought back memories of high school in the ’80s…bad hair, bad clothes, and some of the worst music ever made. Glad I got to live it. Thanks, ABC!
Hits all-time low, pretty much matches the “talent” being rewarded for selling NOT impacting, inspiring, singing or having talent outside of marketing and social media. WOW if video killed the radio show I don’t even know what to say about internet and entertainment.
How did internet and entertainment (kind of broad word there) kill music? If anything, the internet has helped introduce a whole range of music and artists that weren’t readily accessible before unless heard on the radio, which is all the AMA wards cater to. So if anything the internet has helped music and is a good explanation for why less and less people care about these awards.
Freakin teeny bopper fest. Bieber is a genuine talent, bu this show reflects the evisceration of the music industry. How is it that I, an R & B fan, can get more genuine musicality from an episode of “Nashville”? WTF ever happened to real BANDS and MUSICIANS???!!!!!!! Post Madonna, everyone is a cookie-cutter, single performer, studio artist. Boring as fuck. Support real muicians, go to a club where they sit on a stge with an instrument and perform.
I remember when the this “award” was invented about 30 years ago as a self promoting vehicle by the music industry to rival the then, only competitor, The Grammys. They had no validity then, and judging from the current winners, absolutely none now. Thankfully, no one cares based on these numbers.
note that American Dad was a new episode last night
The winners’ list looked more like pop culture awards than music awards.
Boring.
I can see why, when it became the Bieber show I tuned out.
See that picture you used for the article. Yeah. That right there is why it wasn’t watched much. It’s too bad more people didn’t tune into the CMA’s, because it is consistently one of the most entertaining (and better written) award shows aired on any network. Just too bad that it’s country music.
Just to clarify: that headline refers to the AMA’s ratings and not just the show closing number for which they dug MC Hammer out of mothballs to do Gangnam Style? Because that was an all-time low.
Watched about 1/2 the show because our teen boy was interested.
Some of the performances were painful to watch and listen to.
And what’s with these “stars” who go up and accept their award and then challenge “all the haters out there”…..grow up, everyone doesn’t have to like you! You are NOT the BEST singer on the planet.
It was extremely hard to watch – tried but when it turned into a teenage popularity contest for JB (what WAS he wearing ???) couldn’t take any more.
That’s what you get for giving all awards to Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. So embarrassing. Are American Music Awards voted by public? I always thought that they are prestige awards that are voted by members or juries so something. But all those awards to Bieber? That how you turn respectable awards to some ridiculous thing that one takes serious. And public proved it.
They destroyed MTV Video Music awards when they allowed fans to vote crazy for Twilight in every category. They turned once cool awards to joke. Not Bieber with AMA.
It was so sad when they announced that Backstreet Boys have only two AMA’s. They were such great band in their time. The biggest group in the world until their mortal rivals NSYNC arrived. And only two AMA’s… Which means back in a day those awards were hard to get. And now ridiculous Bieber get’s all awards that he is nominated in. And have like 6 or 7 already….
C’mon people. Bieber is a true talent. I’m shocked, shocked, shocked that there is gambling in this casino.
that is because of the boycott….ABC will never be the same ever again….they are the most hated network on TV….it is what they well deserve….we will continue out boycott we won’t give up….and we will win….
Why the boycott, PrimeTime?
I didn’t get the memo.
Thank goodness I didn’t waste time watching the AMAs. Judging by the list of winners, it’s no wonder the show hit a ratings low.
It just goes to show there are just way too many of these types of programs on the airwaves and it’s time to curb them down some. How this awards show has lasted for 40 years is still mind-boggling to say the least and did it even expect to compete against the NFL? Good luck with that and this show was based upon two people anyways…Dweeber and Swift.
I can’t stand it when I hear people say Bieber is a “true talent”. Yes, because true talent requires songwriters who cost $50k+/song (no joke), vocals that are more processed than a block of Velveeta, and a gimmick – such as his hair. The truth is that if you handed him an acoustic guitar and a dry, unprocessed mic and put him on stage… the audience would be demanding their money back.
Yeah if he is a “true talent”, I’d hate to see who they think of as untalented!
AMAs are a bunch of schlock! I agree with the poster who referred to the great talent and songs one receives in a weekly episode of “Nashville.” … Part of the music businesses problem these days is it’s so niche-oriented and it no longer crosses generational lines. Part of the true greatness of true musicians — especially popular ones — is that the music crosses all age, race, ethnic and gender sensibilities (THINK: Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, The Beatles, The Stones, Many Motown artists, The Beach Boys). I am unfamiliar with the music of Bieber, Rhianna, Minaj and all the other manufactured so-called singers that were seen in commercials for the show. They’re all completely dispensible and their 15 minutes are coming to an end soon.
