The networks’ Tuesday lineups returned to normal after Election Night coverage last week. Probably no one is welcoming the return to normalcy more than Fox, whose Tuesday comedy block was also impacted by baseball and other per-emptions. The network brass must be breathing a sigh of relief as freshman The Mindy Project (1.7/4 in adults 18-49) last night went up 13% from the series low posted by its last original two weeks ago. That was the only airing of the show for the past four weeks. Compared with its past two outings before the preemtion-filled last month, Mindy Project was down 11%, a smaller drop than the 19% one Fox’s New Girl suffered last fall returning from a four-week hiatus — which the then-freshman could never make up. New Girl (2.2/6) and fellow returning Fox comedy Raising Hope (1.6/5) were both down a tenth from two weeks ago. But newbie Ben And Kate (1.1/3) took a 21% plunge to a new series low.
Ben And Kate was in a three-way tie for last place among all programs on the Big 4 networks last night, along with ABC’s sophomore Don’t Trust The B— In Apt. 23 (1.1/3, down 8%) and veteran Private Practice (1.1/3, down 21%), both hitting series lows. While Private Practice‘s fate has been determined and it is simply playing out its final batch of episodes, the dismal rating for Apt. 23 is alarming as the series only has a 13-episode order. Its lead-in, Happy Endings (1.4/4) was flat with two weeks ago. With a double-elimination episode, Dancing With the Stars results (1.9/5) was up 6%.
NBC’s The Voice (3.8/11) was up 27% from last week’s low-rated Thursday results show but down 17% from the singing competition’s most recent Tuesday show. Go On (2.3/6) and Parenthood (1.8/5) were each down a tenth from their last originals three weeks ago, while The New Normal (1.8/5) perked up, climbing a tenth. NBC won the night in 18-49 in a close race with CBS — 2.6/7 vs. 2.5/7. CBS won outright in total viewers.
CBS’ NCIS (3.0/9) was down 12% from two weeks ago to a season low. NCIS: LA (2.8/7) was flat, while Vegas (1.6/4) was down 6% to tie a series low.

Damn, Apt 23 is hysterical, this is confusing. Is ABC promoting it?
Maybe Fox shouldn’t have reduced that order on Goodwin Games?
Why would I watch New Girl, Mindy, Ben and Kate, Girl in 23, and Happy Endings, when they are basically 21 minutes of youtube sketches?
Remember when comedy was about great writing, interesting characters, and storylines we looked forward to each week?
Keep blaming every other reason for the poor ratings, except for the fact that these shows are poorly crafted.
/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ What he said!
these 5 shows are just garbage, this whole Hipster crowd junk is just an abomination to comedy
Exactly 29 year old!
New Girl and the Girl in 23′s characters aren’t growing or have an arc.
These shows are beginning to look a lot like SNL as of late. Throw a bunch of jokes in and hope for the best.
WOW! Where did all these people come from that I absolutely agree with? LOL. You know we still have this crowd that insists that vulgar behavior and performing acts defieciant in common decency is somehow a higher form of comedy. I’m just thankful America is calling the leaders of the big 4 networks out on their shit. ABC, FOX, and NBC loaded up on garbage comedies and are paying the price for it. Those comedy ratings are pathetic to say the least. What I love about Americans is that they are showing that they would rather watch a decent procedural, a family sitcom, something that everyone can sit down and enjoy, or nothing at all. Americans are totally turned off by what ABC, FOX, and NBC are offering on Tuesdays with the exception of DWTS which still pulls a huge overal audience despite ABC’s efforts to muck it up. It’s all up to CBS on Tuesdays to carry the banner for the big 4 with their aging procedurals and they are doing it well even though Vegas has got to go!
deficient- sorry. And let me add that we should take a look at the leadership of these networks and question why they would pile so much filth onto the networks when Americans, who watch their programs, watch them specifically because they aren’t on networks like HBO, Showtime, etc. If people wanted to be constantly bombarded by foul language, naked homosexual white men, and gross out humor/sex acts/ violence, then people would watch that garbage in massive numbers. It clearly is not what people want on the big 4 networks. And while I’m on the subject, why is it that alot of the websites censor profane words and/or people act offended to see a profane word in print, but they don’t have a problem with the barrage of “bitches,” and other profane words that are infiltrating programming on the big 4 networks? I watched a show on NBC last week, first and last time I’ll watch it, and the characters just ran with a throwdown of nonbleeped profanity. Pitiful. And the fact that most programming now consists of characters that you can’t stand to watch is a whole new topic I coul write an essay on. HMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Back in my day we… get off my lawn!
For every past hit sit-com show you can name the web will allow me to name at least ten more that aired during that same time that sucked. The majority of sit-coms then and now suck. It’s not because of a dearth of competent writers but because sit-coms have become niche marketed, which means they aren’t going for the broadest audience unless your last name is Lorre, which means plenty will have characters and situation that you don’t relate to because they aren’t attempting to relate to you.
Brentbent, if you think the networks don’t want to get the highest rating possible and aren’t marketing towards the largest audience possible, then you clearly do not understand the economics of television. And furthermore, if these shows aren’t going for the 29 year olds, who are they going for? Maybe your comment was supposed to be ironic, in which case you succeeded and should be writing for one of the above mentioned shows. Next please.
Actually, Brentbent IS right, because having the broadest audience doesn’t necessarily mean the most revenue… that’s why Fox makes more ad $$ than CBS. But the reason for these comedies to be suffering might also have to do with a few other factors:
1) ABC, Fox, and NBC have all scheduled comedies with relatively similar tone that are targeted to the same demographic… all on the same night. If you are at a restaurant that only serves Pepsi, everyone who wants cola will order Pepsi. If you’re at one that serves Pepsi AND Coke, not everyone’s gonna order a Pepsi. Oh, look, they have RC Cola, too! CBS is the only one offering Sprite.
2) The same demographic that is likely to watch these types of comedies is also the same demographic that is most likely to watch them via other means such as DVR/VOD/Hulu etc. Their viewership isn’t included in the overnight ratings.
Thanks for the info Nellie. I’m the first to admit I’ve laughed at the numbers for the CW in the past, but, I`m happy for Hart of Dixie. Also for Emily Owens. I suppose by CW standards those numbers are encouraging indeed. I wish them the best.Let’s just hope the ratings continue going in the right direction. By the way,Hart of Dixie is actually a pretty decent program. Keep up the good work Nellie. Thank you.
These shows don’t grow because they’re all about trickery and gimmicks — the execs think that “quirky” is funny. As far as I can tell, New Girl is about a special needs girl moving in with three cartoon-y idiots. The editing on Ben and Kate is so fast and choppy that you can’t even follow anything or care about anyone — all of these shows suffer from the same thing: bored executives programming for themselves and their friends because they are out of touch with how mass America wants to enjoy comedy.
Y’know, it’s not as if Fox didn’t know that the ball games and the debates and election were coming. They could’ve just waited until all that mishegas was behind them and then premiered the shows. In fact, they used to do that years ago. Maybe TV does make you dumber!
Ben & Kate is an interesting show. Watched a couple episodes on FX this week (why are they showing it on FX? I don’t know). The writing is mostly poor and obvious, but Dakota Fanning and Lucy Punch are so likeable and such talented comedic actresses that they really sell it. HOWEVER, Nat Faxon is just awful. Creepy-looking, unfunny, and grating. Apparently a really talented guy and clearly a good screenwriter, but an awful presence onscreen. He’s the reason I won’t keep watching it.
Dakota Johnson, I mean…
Those CW shows behave erratically like nothing else…
To 29 yr old in the know….BOO YA!!!
I couldn’t have said ot better myself…
These shows are nothing more than YouTube sketches because when the show OS over you can’t help asking yourself”What was the point?”….
You guys hit the nail on the head. While I must admit I often enjoy shows like Apt. 23 and Happy Endings, I don’t feel the need to tune every week because I am not invested in the story or characters. Comedy should be about more than jokes. There’s a good reason why Modern Family is the hit that it is.
Tuesday is over flooded with lame comedies. No wonder there all cancelling each other out. How Ben & Kate got a full season is beyond me. I can’t wait to see its Spring ratings.
Mindy is the best new comedy she’s great because she’s unique. She’s always funny and the writing is smart. The other shows are carbon copies of each other they are generic and I don’t watch any of them.
That’s the truth! MIndy has an incredible, original voice. Her book is brilliant.
Last night’s episode had some of the sharpest writing I’ve seen in a 1/2 hour comedy in some time.
Laugh out loud moments, and telling character beats. I for one am going to keep watching.
“telling character beats…” mindyfan, or mindy writer? hmmmm…..
‘Fraid not, astroturfer. Mindy’s show is the worst of the lot. An extremely overhyped show that turned out to be worthless. And now the critics are turning on her.
Happy to see Goon doing well. Chandler needed a job.
Apt 23 is so awesome and funny and I love it. ABC isn’t promoting it enought.
Why are all the shows I like on the same night?
<3 <3 love<3 heart of Dixie<3<3< can't wait for Tuesdays for this show3<3
@Marc5-I completely agree with you about the profanity on networks these days. I understand profanity has always been around on tv,but,it has gotten much worse as of late. Seems to me these networks believe this will get them viewers, but, I think over time this approach will cost them more viewers. A lot of this garbage on network tv is just nasty & mean spirited! Each broadcast television season on these networks brings us closer & closer to there not being a line between broadcast and cable content. Some of these comedies are not only not funny, but, extremely nasty as well. Instead of coming up with well written sitcoms-these networks seem intent on seeing which part of the viewing audience they can offend next. Thank you Marc5 for giving us all something to think about.
Don’t trust the b in apartment 23 is a funny show. the first three episode of season 2 weren’t that great but it is starting to pick up steam.
