Anne Hathaway may be 15 years younger than Louis CK and smack in the middle of the adults 18-49 demo but with her as host, Saturday Night Live last night drew a 2.6 rating/12 in adults 18-49, down 13% from last week’s show hosted by the veteran comedian. In the metered-market households, last night’s SNL averaged a 5.0/12, even with last week.

Perhaps because she is the most annoying person on the planet?
You’re crazy. She’s a babe.
Louisa, please! You clearly know nothing about how broadcast TV works. You can’t just come out and say that! You have to go through weeks of watching ratings and audience share plummet, discuss the matter upwards through any number of focus groups and layers of management, table meetings with agents and managers, tweak formats, change the music and lighting, bring in outside talent and experts, punch up the writing, fire a few people and then, when you’ve done all that and nothing’s got any better, then and only then may you conclude “because she is the most annoying person on the planet.”
You don’t have to go through all that. SNL chooses their hosts with ratings in mind. Hathaway is a pleasant likable actress but lacks the comedy chops to get the viewers. Louis CK got bigger ratings for a reason. He’s funnier. People didn’t randomly not watch, less watched because of Hathaway. She’s decent, the ratings were decent. That’s its.
JJ… Didja read ripsnorter? Fantastic, Rip… Problem with SNL is that after a couple of years of being okay, the show sucks again. The sketches and characters are uninspired and just plain not funny. There is no dominant comedic force in the cast. What I find amazing is that Stewart and Colbert crank out funny comedy day in and day out and this show can’t figure out how to write one funny bit in a week!? Their Obama/Romney parodies were often beyond lame and the talent pool they have now is either marginalized if you’ve been in the cast for too long, or simply too young to have developed a distinctive comedic voice. Regardless of age, Rihanna was dull, Hathaway was dull haing been given nothing interesting to do, Seth Meyers puts me to sleep and in general, demos be damned, no one is watching because the comedy is flat, the observation uninteresting and the cast, of all one labor of comedy; boisterous, obvious and self aware. Yet somehow, SNL survives. Talk about an opportunity to compete and own this comedy slot!
Thanks, AC. You nail SNL in a nutshell, and it’s not just because I love you! It should own and is instead pwnd, or whatever teenage illiterates text these days.
True, there is your way of doing it. But think of all those people, all those executives with job titles, all of whom need to justify their existence and salaries, not to say the bureaucratic machinery that has to stay oiled, and then the rumor mill that needs to turn, with leaks of course, also the constant infighting and turf fighting! No, it has to be my way, I’m afraid.
She’s not completely unattractive but she is completely annoying.I don’t get it.
I second this!
Ditto. Just because the industry says, over & over & over that an actress is beautiful & talented doesn’t mean it is so. People are smarter than that. This goes for Julia Roberts. Yes, she’s a wonderful person, by ‘beautiful’? most beg to differ. Just look at her features. And don’t give us the, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ junk. Repeat after me, you’re a great writer, you’re a great writer, you’re a great writer. Not so? Guess I have to hire Anne’s PR agent.
SNL could have easily countered that with a skit and promo of Anne as Selena Kyle from DKR. They really are slow on the uptake sometimes.
Honestly, unless they had her in skin tight black leather in those promos most people in the demo would ignore her. We have learned to ignore her for so long, its hard to do otherwise unless there is a splashy reason to do so.
SNL has always been worth watching only when they get hosts that are either funny on their own (Louis CK), extraordinarily talented (Baldwin), or willing to go the extra mile (often criticizing themselves). Hathaway is not only any of the above, but she was saddled by what seems like one of the worst writing staffs the show has had in years.
The election is over, so people who were turning in for political comedy didn’t.
Probably because the writing sucked! The opening sketch was lame and the show went downhill from there (though the host musical number was impressive; this year’s cast has pipes!)
It’s not her fault — last night might be one of the worst SNL’s in a long time. Big fan of the show, but even I didn’t finish it.
They are missing Samberg big time…
The fish stinks from the head. Seth Meyers needs to go and this needed to happen a few years ago. Lorne’s loyalty to him is doing serious damage to this show.
They need to bring back Toonces the Driving Cat.
Not surprised @ the low rating. There were so many segments I fastforwarded through when I got tired of them. Drunk uncle made me skip the rest of the news segment. They’ve really overdone that bit. Skipped Rihanna’s singing. Quickly got tired of the museum painting backstory and the McDonald’s employee meeting, although my local McDonald’s actually employs those exact two types of losers. I had to stop going to McDonald’s because the ghetto service is that bad. Still, I did love her as Tom Cruise’s ex wife on Ellen. They nailed that one. And I was blown away by the skit on Showtime’s Homeland series. Is that show really that bad. WOW! Kind of exposes the Emmy’s as an even bigger sham than I realized, given that they gave the best drama award to that show this year. Thanks to SNL for helping me realize I not missing anything but an overacted, cliched, hyped-up piece of junk.
Did you just conclude that Homeland is a sham based on a parody of Homeland on SNL?
Watch the show. It’s brilliant.
maybe because last night’s episode sucked and Louis CK was funny?
except for the opening number, nice singing.
Hmm. She was god awful hosting the Oscars and has now tanked on SNL. She is Julia Roberts without the looks, the charm, the sex appeal and the acting ability.
‘She is Julia Roberts without the looks, the charm, the sex appeal and the acting ability.’ I LOVE this comment. It is funny (much funnier than Saturday’s SNL) and absolutely true.
Feel better about yourself now?
Anne Hathaway is one of the best SNL hosts. I still fondly remember her great impressions of Judy Garland, the empty-headed Katie Holmes, & the horny Mary Poppins. But, last night, Anne was given beyond horrible material, and SNL didn’t utilize her properly. Last week, they did the same thing to Louis CK. Now, you know something is wrong when the SNL writers and the SNL producers couldn’t provide Hathaway with a good Les Miserables sketch or even provide her with a hilarious Catwoman sketch. What a shame ! Lorne Michael needs to clean house-especially the writing & producing department. Lorne needs to realize change can be better.
Lorne would have to fire himself first and that’s not going to happen. Lorne is the problem. All failure flows down from Lorne he is the king of failure now and it’s ironic because he used to be the king of comedy success. That was a long time ago in a TV landscape far far away.
Anne has hosted before and has done a good job in the past. Her Katie Holmes impersonation is very good (so good that it actually hurt her real-life friendship with TomKat before they divorced.)
But, this SNL was weak from the start. The cold opening was weak and ended on a thud, just before “Live from New York….”. The monologue musical number didn’t hit the mark, despite Anne’s vocal chops. Skits like “Girlfriends” were so forced it was painful to watch. And the “Homeland” skit had promise, but just didn’t come together well.
Even Rhianna’s first number was very odd – a green-screened head-trippy video that made her look like she was in a bad 3D conversion (her feet appearing to not touch the ground). Having the band members wear the same color green-screen shirts so the sort of disappeared didn’t help much.
All in all, a below average SNL. Sad really, considering the big news week they had to work with.
They really need to fire the entire writing staff. What is up with Cecily Strong being in every skit? She’s terrible.
Anne Hathaway isn’t funny
Perhaps it’s because Anne Hathaway is, without fail, the single most annoying person in film.
Oh, the Hathaway/SNL diatribes are a crashing bore. How wonderful that the Internet has bred such a refreshing dialogue. God. Anyway, I enjoyed the show, and Hathaway is obviously a talented performer, whether you like her personality, or not. Why don’t you just anoint her “Annoy Anne”, and boycott everything she does?
Yes, people who hold views opposite to yours are indeed such crashing bores. But thank God that you, MexyMartini, have swooped in to lift this debate up on the powerful wings of your brilliance. Oh bless you, and forgive the useless chatter of your lessers, dear MM!
More annoying than Keira Knightley?
NO ONE is more annoying (or untalented) than Ms. Knightly. I’ll be skipping the Jack Ryan reboot because of her, and I would have bought a ticket.
Pre-election episode: ratings high
post-election episode: ratings low
It’s not that complicated to figure out. Host has nothing to do with it
wow, took this many comments to get to the simple explanation?
Hathaway might be a perfectly pleasant human being, but on camera she projects a corrosively cloying “Please adore me” vibe, like some turbo-charged Sally Field. It makes her exhausting to watch.
SNL has become so heavily identified with political humor that a nation suffering from election fatique simply tuned out.
I good part of the Saturday Night Live show is political satire. Now that the election is over people want a break. They want non-political escapism. The most invisible man in the world for the foreseeable future is going to be Mitt Romney.
Maybe because it’s not that demo but the older one that watches this show, especially live.
1. 18-24 Dont know who she is
2. 25-30 Don’t care who she is
3. 31-40 Dont like who she is
4. 40-49 Unlike who she and her elitist pals are, have to work that 2nd job the next day and cant stay up to figure out whether they know, care or like who she is.
The magic is gone without Kristen Wig, Samberg and Abby Elliott. The good news is I’m getting more weekend sleep………..
you should look into these magic boxes that record things from the last century.
This should be a surprise to no one. Young people are increasingly not watching television at all. They get what the want via other methods and eschew sitting in front of the “boob tube.” I’m waiting for a network exec to say “we’ve decided not to focus all our shows on the young demo because it’s not worth it anymore.”
