SUNDAY 9AM, 8TH UPDATE: Sony Pictures, MGM, and Eon Productions just announced that Skyfall, the 23rd and biggest grossing in the James Bond film series, earned another $89.0M million this weekend overseas bringing the international total to $428.6 million. With this weekend’s $90M opening in the U.S. and Canada, the Sam Mendes-directed, John Logan-scripted, Daniel Craig-starring actioner now has an estimated $518.6M worldwide. Yowza!
Both Skyfall and DreamWorks Studios/Fox/Disney’s Lincoln received great reviews going into Friday and so their opening domestic box office sparked intense industry interest. Total moviegoing this weekend
through Sunday was $160M, more than half of it from 007, so that’s a very nice +20% more than last year. “Skyfall blew past all expectations for the film,” gushed a Sony exec today, calling it “the biggest juggernaut in the history of the James Bond franchise”. Despite a four year hiatus during which some cynics thought 007 had jumped the shark, Skyfall opened in North America much larger than anyone thought. Rival studios thought Sony was low-balling with its $75M pre-release estimate. And on Saturday morning, the studio begged me to lower my sources’ $88M weekend estimate. But the actual number is $87.8M ($31.7M Friday, $33.9M Saturday, and an estimated $22.2M Sunday). Add in Thursday’s select 463 IMAX preview screenings and Skyfall‘s cume is now $90M. This is absolutely the biggest-grossing 007 movie ever in the string of films since 1962 – not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices or IMAX premiums. It blows away Quantum Of Solace‘s $67.5M opening weekend in November 2008. After Skyfall received a coveted ‘A’ CinemaScore from audiences, word of mouth bumped grosses +7% from Friday to Saturday - even though Friday’s gross included $2.4M from Friday midnights. Skyfall‘s 3,505-run wide release in U.S. and Canada also set a new theater count record for the franchise and its #1 opening is the ninth to be released by Sony Pictures in 2012. IMAX took in $13.1M at their theaters as part of Skyfall‘s weekend box office. Exit polls showed 60% of the opening weekend audience was male and 40% was female with 25% under 25 years old. Sony also says the exits showed “extraordinary recommend numbers” so expect a great holiday run.
Internationally, Skyfall opened overseas October 26th, and going into this Friday the actioner had taken in $346.8M internationally. But Hollywood was betting that the worldwide total would be a gargantuan $500+M through Sunday - and it was. Sony’s markets earned $79.6M to bring the cume to $367.4M. MGM’s
distribution partners grossed $9.4M to bring their cume to $61.2M. James Bond #23 has now passed the $407.7M lifetime of Quantum Of Solace and on Monday will pass Casino Royale‘s $432.2M. As for top markets, the UK fell off just 30% in its 3rd weekend, grossing a huge $18.2M to bring the cume to $117.5M. It’s now the 4th biggest film of all time in the UK with £72.9M (and the biggest non-3D film) on its way to becoming #2 of all time on Monday. Germany was off just 30% from its opening frame, adding $15.1M for $44.0M. Others include France now $42.5M, Holland $9.4M, Switzerland $10.9M, Italy $12.1M, Russia $22.0M, Spain $9.9M, Sweden $11.3M, India $8.5M, Mexico $5.8M, Brazil $10.6M, Denmark $9.9M, Norway $9.1M, Korea $14.1M, and Austria $5.4M.
DreamWorks Studios/Fox/Disney’s PG-13 Lincoln platformed in just 11 theatres and overperformed. This massive opening will build even more Oscar buzz for Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis, Tony Kushner, and the rest. Despite a running time of 2-hours/30-minutes, Lincoln surpassed insiders’ hopes that the biopic could debut with an impressive $40K-$50K per screen average through Sunday. Now the real number is $81,800 per screen average and $900K cume this weekend ($268K Friday, $347K Saturday, and an estimated $285K Sunday). ”Off to an incredible start with sold out shows in a number of theatres across the country,” a studio insider tells me, with venues scrambling to add extra screenings. This all bodes well for Lincoln’s continued holiday play when Disney expands theater counts domestically. Twentieth Century Fox has overseas where surprisingly its other Honest Abe movie, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, did 66.6% of its business. So expect Spielberg’s pic to have heat abroad, too.
As for holdovers, last weekend’s #1 Wreck-It Ralph from Walt Disney Animation hung on for a strong -32% through Sunday, while #2 Paramount’s Flight posted a very good -39%. Full analysis later.

Back to 007. “We are off to an amazing start,” Sony told me Friday morning as Skyfall began its roll out in North America. It did $2.2M in
Thursday previews that were exclusive to 463 IMAX screens and Premium Large Format theaters. And beginning with Friday midnight shows, it did $2.4M for a combined total of $4.6M. “The matinee numbers are huge,” one rival studio exec told me by midday. “Right now the hourlys are very, very strong!” By early evening it was clear that matinees were “through the roof”, including exceptional performance from IMAX theaters now running with their regular schedule. After a 4-year-delay, James Bond #23 is a 3-way co-production among Eon Productions, MGM Studios, and Sony Pictures who all had to wait for MGM’s bankruptcy to get Skyfall‘s sorry financial and ownership state sorted out. Good thing, too, because the 007 franchise is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year (after Dr. No debuted in 1962). It’s now also the biggest Bond picture of all time in Britain. Setting records in dozens of overseas territories is a great indicator of how Skyfall will do at the North American box office. It started its IMAX showings Thursday and opens wide in 3,505 theaters today. Hollywood expects Skyfall to top both 2008′s Quantum Of Solace and 2006′s Casino Royale as the highest-grossing film in the Bond franchise (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices). Quantum Of Solace set a new Bond opening-weekend record with $67.5M but Skyfall could wind up around $75M. All-in domestic estimates for Skyfall in the U.S. and Canada now top $215M – much more than Quantum Of Solace‘s $168.3M or Casino Royale’s $167.4M. Even better for the studios and filmmakers, Skyfall cost much less than both other films. Also the audience for 007 looks to have expanded: Fandango tells me that 26% of online ticket-buyers for Bond #23 said they only see a “handful (2 or 3)” of films each year so Skyfall isn’t just reaching frequent moviegoers. Going into today, Skyfall was accounting for 58.79% (41.74% for standard screens and 17.05% for IMAX) of all online ticket sales on MovieTickets, and 65% on Fandango.
Meanwhile Fandango surveyed more than 1,000 Skyfall ticket-buyers and found that male moviegoers for the 007 film outnumber female 52%/48%, 54% said Adele’s new theme song increased their awareness of the movie, 78% said the grittier action increased their interest in seeing the movie, 39% (the majority) picked Daniel Craig as their favorite Bond while only 35% picked Sean Connery, 47% said it’s important for them to see the film in IMAX, 29% picked Goldfinger as their favorite Bond villain/henchman followed by Blofeld (14%) and Jaws (13%). When asked for their favorite elements of the Bond series, 77% of respondents picked the action and stunts, 64% the exotic destinations, 56% picked the cool cars, 54% picked the gadgetry, 52% picked the villains, and 37% picked ‘the Bond girls’.
Overseas, Skyfall on Thursday became the UK’s all-time highest grossing 007 movie, taking in £57M ($91.2M) in just 12 days and passing The Dark Knight Rises. Quantum Of Solace grossed $586M (£367.4M) worldwide and Casino Royale $594.2M (£372.5M) as the highest-grossing film in the Bond franchise (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices). Skyfall will push past $600M at the very least. Grammy multi-winner Adele sang the Bond theme. Daniel Craig reprises his role as 007 — the 6th actor to play the art since Ian Fleming’s spy novels were made into movies — with Javier Bardem playing the villain Raoul Silva, and Naomie Harris and Bérénice Marlohe as Bond girls. Mendes was the first Oscar-winner to direct a Bond pic. Meanwhile, Sony, MGM, and Eon are so pleased with Skyfall that its screenwriter John Logan already is writing the next two installments, Bond 24 and 25.

How long are they delaying reporting the grosses from yesterday? Later today or not until tomorrow?
How long are they delaying in stating that Skyfall SUCKED!
Worst Bond film in 20 years…..Don’t waste your time/money at IMAX!
Actually saw Skyfall on Thursday morning @ 007. Packed IMAX theater. Pretty good film though still not may favorite Bond movie.
Mark my words. Skyfall will sail over 90Mil before Monday and over 250Mil domestic. My wife who never goes to action pics agreed to see it in theatres and we go maybe 5 times per year. I think it is the Bond name and perception of a hit movie. Otherwise I think that after seeing it, Casino Royale will still remain my favorite Bond flick. This is based on trailers for Skyfall only.
The new 007 Bond film Skyfall definitely lives up to the hype. My Wife & I caught it yesterday in IMAX & its worth every penny including the new Miss Moneypenny. It’s formatted differently for IMAX so it fills up the entire screen giving the audience 26 pct more picture than in the standard widescreen format in other theaters. No spoilers but there are definitely some very loud explosions that’ll literally jolt you from your seat especially towards the climax.
That’s technically a spoiler, the Moneypenny thing, might want to preface your post next time with the word Spoilers (or at the very least right before you actual spoil something)
Ummm actually no, It doesnt fill up all IMAX screens.
If you go to a true large screen format IMAX theatre such as the universal city walk 18 IMAX, there is about 10 feet of dead screen space at the top of the picture.
further more it isnt simply a opening up the frame of the picture to reveal more image. It is cropped and zoomed in on. So badly that alot of the detail you see in the scope aspect ratio presentations at regular theatres is lost. I saw the 12:07 am IMAX screening on WEd night/Thurs morning 20 mins after watching the AFI secret screening at Graumans Chinese. And the scope presenation at Graumans blew away the quality of the universal city walk IMAX presentation.
Who invented the whole “Ummm, no” reply? You sound like a tool and not an original one at that. Lemmings…
Film critic friend of mine saw it this week and said don’t bother. I thought it was an odd thing to say considering how well it is currently doing on Rotten Tomatoes, but his taste in cinema is almost identical to mine so now I’m hesitant.
I’ll still see it, but I won’t be rushing out to beat the crowds this weekend I think. Probably take the kids to see Wreck It Ralph again, which was fantastic.
I’ve only seen the last half of Casino Royale and didn’t see Quantum of Solace, but I may now. The movie feels like a different Bond, more character development and less focus on endless action scenes. Very nicely paced. I plan to see it again and I don’t repeat view many movies.
Your film critic friend? Please tell me who he is, lol. Anybody can be a film critic with the internet. Anyways, he has bad taste in movies, then.
Lincoln movie something I’m sure everyone wants to see. Just wait until it is 3D and becomes a ride at U city. Takes some creative companies to do such a project.
Amazing start for Bond, which is going to be insanely huge! Too bad Sony will make almost nothing because of the shitty deal they made for the privilege of releasing it.
I just caught a matinee of Lincoln in Century City and found it very uninspired. Really Spielberg? After all these years of chatter about this film and this is what you have to show for it? I found Daniel Day-Lewis good, but not great, and Sally Field did overact, but not too much. Kushner’s script was okay…not bad, but not good either. And as expected with Spielberg the direction was heavy, heavy handed and bordered on ‘preachy’. Its a great idea for a film (the passage of the 13th Amendment by the House) just not in the right hands.
I’d wait and see it on DVD or on-demand.
I have seen many mixed reviews about the film. The thing I notice is a lot of the films everyone was talking about regarding the Awards season have really fallen short. I think there will be some Oscar surprises. DDL is an amazing actor but truth is he is like Meryl. Even when they are not honestly great in a role the critics act as if they are, and the public perception is that they can’t do any wrong.
I’m not sure if I will see Lincoln or not.
regarding Skyfall.. my boyfriend saw it and said it was good, but not as awesome as everyone is saying. He said that the film didn’t focus enough on Bond.. not sure how that is possible. And he didn’t care that much for Javier Bardem. But he is super critical. I have not doubt the film will make loads of money. Deserved or not. Such is the way of things.
maybe you saw Vampire Hunter instead? the ‘Lincoln’ I saw this weekend was pretty great.
75 million? Gimme a break. Enough with the Sony-influenced low balling on Skyfall.
90-100 easy. Probably more.
Only reason Skyfall isn’t 90%+ of online sales is because of the Twilight thing coming out next week. Gonna see Skyfall in XD tonight. (No IMAX in this dusty town). Looking forward to it.
Truthteller – you, unfortunately, are someone’s flack. Clear as day. I refer everyone to Kenny Turan’s review today for a good, honest, appraisal. It’s a wonderful film and also – especially after what we all just went through in the election – an important one. A story we have not seen, thrilling, emotional and AMAZING performances.
saw Skyfall this afternoon. very good. Very strong on characterization, as expected from Mendez. Script was very good with great lines exchanged and some humorous throwaways. Pacing was a bit off in the middle, but who cares cause we have Bond on the big screen again. wasn’t aware of the surprise ending. got a little misty….Go see and enjoy….However I feel that Casino Royale was a bit better but that’s just being I think over-critical.
I’ve been reading the reviews before going tonight, and these comments here, and of all of them, I have to say I agree with your take the most. There was some amazing character development, especially Bond’s backstory, and there were enough nods to what you expect from Bond to make any fanboy happy. But, yes, it did drag a bit in the middle, especially the first half of the middle. Worth sitting thru that, though, for the great ride at the end.
I saw it in a standard-screen theater and found that the movie more than lived up to the hype. It’s crafted as a cat-and-mouse thriller, with more than a few nods to the entire Bond canon. Cinematographer Roger Deakins should be mentioned when it’s Oscar time. Some of his images are painterly. The animated opening titles are probably the best in the series and I am one who thought the title sequence from “Casino Royale” couldn’t be beat.
Why do I feel almost obligated to watch Lincoln? The sentimental trailer was rather antiquated, almost satirical. It reminded me of
that parody video, “Trailer for Every Oscar-Winning Movie Ever” released a few years back. I have no idea if it’s a good film, but Disney hasn’t done the movie any favors by assuming the subject matter will carry the day alone.
I saw Skyfall, by the way. It was very enjoyable.
Lincoln was phenomenal. I already want to see it again. Between this and Argo – honestly, I can’t stress enough how great it is to see some truly intelligent films.
Same here, really looking forward to both. I’m weary of movies being just ome action franchise after another.
I watched Lincoln last night as the closing night of AFI, the movie is not entirely historically acurrate,(not by a long shot)
But its a well crafted and nice told story.
The best performances in the movie in my opinon though are by James Spader and Tommy Lee Jones. (one or both deserve an oscar nom for their performance.)
Superhero, superspy, etc. sort of films are only as good as their villains.
Bardem is brilliant, and he makes Skyfall the well-deserving critical and commercial blockbuster that it is.
I agree with you there, Bardem was amazing in this film.
Lincoln is amazing. The only people who won’t love it are those with rival films hoping for some Academy love, and racist Southerners who won’t like the portrayal of their beloved Confederacy.
Saw it last week. It is good but not even close to what critics are saying. There were a few moments when I started to get bored.
Bardem is good but I don’t understand all the buzz, is not that good (I watched it dubbed, so I may change my mind when I get to see it in english. It’s almost impossible before it’s released in dvd
).
Not my favorite Bond movie, nor the second or third.
Don’t bother with Quantam of Solace. It sucked. Casino Royale was very entertaining
So, of these three big recent releases which would you rank highest to lowest in terms of Oscar chances for acting, script and direction: Flight? Lincoln? Skyfall?
I definitely think Denzel and DDL are going to go head to head for Oscar glory, with DDL winning for Lincoln. But, oddly, I found the script for Flight to be superior to the writing of Lincoln, and feel ashamed for saying so because I love Tony Kushner’s plays/writing
It’s official. Craig is the best Bond ever. And you have to include SkyFall as one of the top five in the series. Its really good. Completely erases the stink off of Quantum.
Nonsense. James Bond will forever be equated with Sean Connery. He owns the character with his, “Bond, James Bond.”
Agreed. Definitely a Top 5 in the Bond series.
Lots to like about Skyfall – a great opening, Naomi Harris, Javier Bardem is terrific, liked the new Q… but as the movie goes along it gets smaller and less interesting. The last half hour was dreadful.
Problem for me was that it didn’t feel like a Bond movie. I want gadgets, crazy plots, cool sidekicks, Bond Girls. I’m not saying the movie feature Roger Moore style excess / campery but Skyfall ends up feeling small and generic to me.
The last half hour has to be the best half hour of any Bond film. Small? It’s epic, according to the true definition of the word.
Actually agree. There were some things ***possible spoiler*** I liked such as how at the end, it almost seemed to go full circle and suddenly felt we could watch all the old bond movies again. (ok, not really a spoiler).
But it did seem that at times, I was watching a BBC drama and not a Bond movie. There are certain elements that make up a Bond movie and this one was lacking in some of the ones you mentioned.
Having said that, I enjoyed it, but perhaps more for what will follow in the next Bond movie.
The thing that annoyed me about the new Bond film is that it makes fun of Bond and everything that makes Bond films, well, Bond. At 24, it also made me feel OLD, because just like most people on this planet, I’m not the biggest computer nerd around and don’t always understand that world.
The world that I understand, and the world Bond belongs in, is a world of thrilling action and gadgets and great complex plot. Not only was the plot way too small for a Bond film in Skyfall, but the ending was also very predictable. Whatever happens in the end had to happen otherwise this movie would have been a gigantic waste of time. But even that doesn’t save it.
Also, way too much screen time for Q. That kid was annoying as fuck. And while we’re in the subject, why does every hero have to be brought down to mere mortal’s level? I wanna watch an almost invulnerable super character that I can relate to but who is still a little higher up in the hierachy. We don’t have to be on the same level.
yes he was in alot of the scenes but this installment was more of a changing of the guard and more tech than action. you can say this is the 21st century bond. the two previous were more action bond less tech. this is the reboot call it 1.2 for a new century. lol
And, not to get into spoiler territory, the brilliant Q revealed the weakness of the script by committing “dramatically convenient stupidity.” The DCS was scattered through the story, as well.
You can identify with an ‘almost invulnerable super character’? You certainly have a good opinion of yourself.
$33 million for Friday?
If it’s like Casino Royale, it will improve 4-5% from Friday to Saturday and drop 30% from Saturday to Sunday. In that case the opening weekend would be $90-92 million.
If it’s like Quantum of Solace it will drop 4-5% from Friday to Saturday and 43% from Saturday to Sunday which means the opening weekend will be $80-82 million.
Either way ‘Skyfall’ will have a huge pening weekend and the biggest one ever for a ‘Bond’ film.
