Universal Pictures will be releasing The Purge on May 31, 2013, the studio announced today. Directed and written by James DeMonaco, the dystopian thriller stars Ethan Hawke and Game Of Thrones’ Lena Headey and is set in a crime-overwhelmed America that has one day a year where anything goes. A break-in at the gated community home of Hawke’s character sets off a chain of events that throws him and his family into an urban nightmare. The film is being released by Universal from its deal with producer Jason Blum, who partners with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. Blum, Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form are producing with Sébastien Kurt Lemercier.

This is the perfect title for a Michael Bay produced movie.
To purge means: to rid of whatever is impure or undesirable; cleanse; purify.
There has never been a Bay movie with such an accurate title.
I was lucky enough to go to an early screening of this film – it was original and well-done. It definitely didn’t feel like a Michael Bay movie; there was plenty of emotion and character development, and Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey were both absolutely fantastic in their roles, as was the main villain. Creepy, tense, and kind of scarily realistic – it’s set in the near enough future that it feels like it could actually happen. Excited to see it get a release date!
