Summit Entertainment is bearing down on the male lead in Divergent, the adaptation of the Neil Burger-directed adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel that will star Shailene Woodley. She’s the next hot gal after a breakout performance in The Descendants, followed by scoring the Mary Jane role in The Amazing Spider-Man sequel. I’m told that Summit held Divergent “chemistry” readings yesterday that paired Woodley with four young actors: Luke Bracey, Brenton Thwaites, Lucas Till and Jack Reynor.
Since I barely got my high school Regent’s diploma with a 65 in chemistry (at the time it was a jump shot at the buzzer following the 32 I scored in trigonometry), I am the wrong person to ask about who emerged with a leg up by acing this chemistry test. But I think it means we should have a winner shortly, and it likely will be one of these up and comers.
Divergent is being produced by Red Wagon partners Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher and adapted by Snow White And The Huntsman‘s Evan Daugherty. It is being compared to The Hunger Games because of the age of the characters and the violence that takes place in a futuristic setting. This tale takes place in a dystopia where society is divided into factions based on human traits. A 16-year-old leaves her faction to join a rival one, but during the violent initiation she falls in love with a young man and they try to find their place in this rough world.

Going on looks alone, Thwaites should have the role, hands down.
I continue to be amazed at Shailene Woodley getting roles and acclaim as an actress, as I found her to be beyond wooden and the weakest link in a cast of weak links on Secret Life of a Teenager.
Actually, going on looks alone, I would give it to Jack Reynor, hands down. He has blue eyes and brown hair, like Four is supposed to have, and if you watch him interviewed, you can see he definitely has intensity and mystery, which is essential for the part.
Brenton Thwaites seems too sweet – and Four is NOT a sweet guy.
Absolutely agree. It says pretty plainly in the novel that while he’s attractive to Tris, he’s not considered socially pretty like some of the other boys. Reynor looks deceptively young, just as Four is described. I don’t know much about the leading lady who was cast, but at least she’s not Kristen Stewart?
Definitely going with Reynor, he has the looks,feel, and overall essence of four down. He LOOKS like he was born for the part. PLEASE LET IT BE REYNOR! Thwaites=too young, Bracely =too old, till= too blond, young, typical candor looking guy. Just imagine Reynor in all black with a gun pointed at peter’s head, Perfection!

I honestly don’t think its an issue if Brenton Thwaites looks too nice! As long as he can ACT like Tobias! I really think he’s perfect for this role and looks like him too! The others defintley dont fit Tobias, they’re too mean. Tobias is just intimidating. They need to be able to show that soft side that was shown in the book with Tris, and that’s ESPECIALLY where Brenton would come into play. But, i also think he could still ACT and hold a gun like he means it. For example, Lucas Till is too mean, hes better for the role of Peter. Brenton is the most like Tobias and i think he’ll be able to act like him too! BRENTON THWAITES PLZ
Completely agree! Not that I hate Shailene, I just think she isnt at all right for the role. I dont think she’s a strong actress; I cant picture her climbing a ferris wheel, shooting a gun, or jumping off a train. I cant see her as Tris…..
But the author said she wants someone who looks too sweet to be Tris that people won’t expect her to be really reckless, if you see what I mean? But in the book, Tris is definitely not so pretty and Shailene is… very pretty.

Thaiwtes was horrendous on his lifetime remake of blue lagoon. It was painful to watch him try and act and talk in an American accent at the same time. Maybe he should stick to horrible Australian soaps

Brenton was great in BLUE LAGOON and I can’t wait to see him in Malefexient. He is gorgeous and real. If they want the ladies to come he is the only choice.

The only one of these who can act is jack reynor, but he is not handsome enough for the part. Im hearing none of these choices where liked anyway.. and right they are too. four is meant to be much more mysterious and edgy, he is muscular, not a little boy! (and not blonde.)

I’m a white female and I’m oh so sick and tired of reading about white, young actors of both genders being cast in movies and TV series. This is 2012: how about Hollywood go color blind? I want to read about Asian-American, Latino, Black, etc. actors/actresses being cast. I want to see more movies where the rom-com couple just happens to be an Asian-American man and a black woman or whatever! Reading Deadline I need sunglasses: it’s blinding white everywhere. And Hollywood is supposedly libral?! I’m not talking about affirmative action which is patronizing. But please: casting agents, producers, directors, writers: mix it up, please!
Agreed. I’d much rather see Francia Raisa – also on Secret Life, but a far superior actress – in major movies, but pale skin far too often wins out over acting quality.

hate all the actor choices so far. Four needs to be the hard faced mysterious guy, hes need to be played by some one LIKE (not actually him) Ian Somerhalder. because he plays the perfect bad guy yet the heart throb type. And Tris needs to be a plain face, so she can pull off first chapter tris & crazy shooting mofo tris
Veronica Roth, the author, said she had wished that she’d put more diversity in races on her blog. Plus, several other characters are Latino or African-american. Did anyone else know that?
Oh my gosh, I actually pictured a young ian somerhalder when I read it, because he can really pull off dark and mysterious. Of course, he’s way too old now. I don’t really think any of these people are tobias they’re all really old too. I don’t care if he looks a little different to what’s described in the books, but he definagely needs to be muscular, dark and mysterious and dark hair would probably be better.

Shailene Woodley was fantastic in The Descendants and she was definitely robbed of at least a nomination for an Oscar, so people should really give her a chance.

I agree! Jack Reynor! To be honest… I had Four picture as a black man for quite a ways into the book. Just me I know, but that is how I saw him.
I definitely agree in general, but I have such a clear picture of Tris and Four and I need them to match. The vast majority of supporting characters, like Christina and Uriah, are vaguely described as having “dark skin” which opens the roles up to so many ethnicities. If people want to whine like they did about Rue and Cinna in HG, that’s their issue.
Sci Fi in general has room like nothing else to expand it’s diversity and I would love to see it going forward, but I need Tris to be pale and blonde.
Yeah, I agree. In the book, Uriah was described with dark skin and I think Christina was too. And I hated it when people said that about Rue, she had dark skin in the book! Anyway Shailene looks like a terrible Tris. I hope they cast someone else.
Lucas till was NOT in the hunger games. They were considering alexander ludwig ( Cato in the hunger games), but that was back in october. He and lucas till do favor i guess, but they are two different actors

I really think that Jack Reynor looks like the best candidate for Four. He looks like what Four looks like, and everyone I know agrees. Luke Bracey looks about forty, and not at all caring. Brenton Thwaites looks about 14, and just as mature, and that Lucas Till guy just looks awkward. Jack looks caring, mature, and just like I picture Four in the book. at least as long as he looks like he does in the picture you show here, and you don’t let him have any facial hair.

I think it should be Jack Rreynor for sure. I heard he was really good in What Richard Did. He seems like he could bring the intensity and mystery, but be loving at the same time.

Shailene Woodley is going to be Tris? What? I don’t see that at all. I picture Dakota Fanning when I picture Tris, so I’m confused. I have nothing against Shailene Woodley, but I don’t see her as Tris.
Those guys in the picture are way too early in character Tobias as Four. I picture Liam Hemsworth as Four.

Brenton Thwaites is perfect for the role. He’s exactly what Veronica Roth describes him; young, brunette with very deep eyes and brown eyes and long lashes. I think Till is too ‘pretty’ and blonde and Bracey is too old
