In a late buy, ABC has put in development The Returned, a serialized drama produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and ABC Studios. Written by Aaron Zelman (AMC’s The Killing), The Returned is based on the debut novel by Jason Mott, which is slated to be published next September by Mira Books. The rights to the book sparked a bidding war among several production companies and studios. Brillstein and Plan B were able to land the property in their first teaming together, and the project was taken to ABC Studios where Brillstein is based. Executive producing alongside Zelman are JoAnn Alfano and Jon Liebman from BEP and Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner from Plan B.
The Returned is one of several projects BEP has set up this season, including two with CSI creator Anthony Zuiker: soap Taboo at ABC and an Alice In Wonderland sequel at NBC. Zelman is repped by UTA and Circle of Confusion.

Love it! A million and one non-writing EP’s who will take full credit for the series (and a giant paycheck) even though they just read a manuscript and maybe give a few notes (but doubtful)
These are the kind of people who are gonna kill it for all the real creatives on a show — the writing staff, the directors, the editors, cast and crew — everyone else who busts their ass every eight days to make the shows we see.
If you’re a non-writing EP working at a production company, you’re really just a gutter rat. Stay in the sewer.
What, is Aaron Kaplan “producing” this, too?
I was lucky enough to read this book early and it lives up to the hype. This could be an amazing series. Can’t wait to see it!
Aaron Zelman is a class act and an awesome writer! He’ll kill this adaptation.
What ever happened to the Kyle Chandler death penalty show Pitt and Brillstein were doing? That pilot was fantastic.
Boy, this sure sounds like a massive ripoff of the film THEY CAME BACK.
Yes. A total rip-off.
Well, ABC should watch (and take example on) the French tv series “Les Revenants” which is absolutely crazy.
Funny that this “high concept” drama is currently broadcasted on French Pay TV and is called Les Revenants (The Returned in French). Google it and you’ll see that the logos are almost identical. The French TV show is already based on a French film… Probably soon on Netflix here.
I was just about to ask if this is a rip-off of “Les Revenants” which seems to be doing quite well. Are we pulling another “Sommersby” here? (imdb used to tell the story on that but I see someone made them take it down – where whoever made that movie thought attempted to steal a very successful French film wholesale – Le Retour de Martin Guerre – by just changing the actors, the era and the setting.)
Hmm. What are the odds! ABC passes on the Revival show based off the comic, and then goes and accepts this show, which is literally THE SAME THING! REVIVAL CAME FIRST!
This show is too similar the Revival, an Image Comic by Mike Norton and Tim Seeley.
I haven’t heard of that French show and movie, but I respect the fact it came first and may be the influence of this ABC thing.
