ABC News’ Senior White House Correspondent Jake Tapper is joining CNN as the anchor of a new weekday program and chief Washington correspondent, the network said today. The as-yet unnamed show is to debut in 2013, said CNN. “With CNN’s impeccable reporting during the elections and the exciting changes in the works for the network, this is a perfect time to join the CNN team,” said Tapper in a statement released by CNN. “I am excited about the prospect of working with both the new leadership and some old friends and colleagues.” CNN, which Jeff Zucker takes over at the end of next month, ended up in third place in 2012 among cable news networks, behind both Fox News and MSNBC.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood actually made the news of Tapper’s move public a bit earlier today while announcing new correspondent assignments for the network’s Washington D.C. bureau. “Jake is leaving ABC News for an opportunity at CNN. You’ll hear more about his new anchor role from his new network,” wrote Sherwood in a memo to staff Thursday. Sherwood also announced that Capitol Hill correspondent Jonathan Karl is ABC News’ new Chief White House Correspondent and Martha Raddatz would be taking on an expanded role as Chief Global Affairs Correspondent for the network. Tapper had been ABC’s main White House reporter for the last four years.

Jake’s question to the president earlier this week was a real dick move – wonder if he’s overconfident after this CNN deal.
You are so wrong; Jake has the balls to confront Mr. Obama with very direct questions. We need more of that.
Thank you, Ginger!
I agree 100%. Obama is my president, but I too wanted to know why he fell asleep at the wheel re gun control legislation. After even one massacre I know if I were this country’s leader I don’t care how many balls I was juggling – I would deal with it! Truth is he was more likely fearful (or his people were) of being confrontational during term one. I’m sorry, it’s no excuse. When families are ripped open as loved ones are murdered in cold blood, fuck no! Delay is bullshit. And the excuses are just that.
I truly have to scratch my head at Obama supporters who will not tolerate ANY legitimate criticism of their guy. In fact it’s bizarre. Obama dropped the ball on this. Period. So did Pelosi and all my reps from California. All the Dems who refused to touch this issue are responsible. It’s the horrible reality we’re all left with following this heartbreaking tragedy. I’m so sad and angry over our failures. It’s bullshit we are all so focused on international terrorism, but not our own.
What you call a “dick move” the rest of us call “real reporting.” Tapper is probably the only real journalist left on the hill, and isn’t afraid to ask tough questions instead of fawn all over Obama like the rest of the yutzes in the press gallery. Would you consider it a “dick move” if that had been Bush instead? Compare any of GW’s press conferences to Obama’s… the difference in tone from the reporters is shocking, but telling.
A reporter’s job isn’t to pull punches, kiss butts, or stroke egos. They are supposed to get to the truth, report the facts, and let their audience decide for themselves how they feel about things. In this regard, Jake Tapper succeeds, and is regarded highly by his peers and his readers/viewers.
How was that a bad move? He asked an obvious question. This was not the first mass shooting of his presidency? “Where have you been” was the only non-softball question the sniveling press asked the president. Jake has consistently shown he is one of the few real journalists left. The press is not supposed to be a PR agency for those in power (as it has become under this president). I may actually watch CNN again for the first time in a very long time.
Asking the president why it took themurder of 20 children to express an interest in reasonable gun control is a “dick move”?
agreed. the “where were you” question was uncalled for. I’m glad the President went smart-ass with his answer.
Will CNN’s next announcement be Wolf Blitzer’s retirement
Does this mean Zucker may REALLY try to fix CNN? Tapper is the least bias in the Wasington press corps, they now have to do something about that boring primetime line up without turning it into MSNBC lite.
Jake Tapper: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO
An untalented reporter joining the lowest rated news network. Sounds absolutely perfect.
Anyone who posts that Jake Tapper isn’t a talented and unbiased reporter is either a far left liberal or far right conservative—and that puts Jake Tapper in the best possible position.
I dont know much about Jake Tapper but, I had the opportunity to watch the clip of his exchange with the president and felt that the way he posed the question was in poor taste. I wish him the best of luck at CNN.
Tapper’s great and I’m in complete agreement. After Aurora Obama had to wait for tykes to be mowed over in order to address the “complex” issue of guns?
Everybody knows the truth.
At that time (July) re-election was his only priority.
It makes you wonder where his head’s at ever.
Pleased for Jake Tapper, one of the best out there at the moment, and will miss seeing him in the press room, as well as his excellent reports and coverage of this White House. At least at CNN we’ll get to see more of him. (ABC’s got great back-up in Jonathan Karl though.)
ABC never gave Jake Tapper his due. Instead of giving him THIS WEEK they ran him over with Christiane Amanpour who couldn’t cut it. Then they ran him over again with George Stephanopoulos – This is a big loss for ABC News and they deserve it. We’ll be moving to CNN! Keep those hardball questions going Jake!
Jake Tappers’ question and tone that he used to address the President was rude and disrespectful. He could have asked it in a different way. There is a reason why ABC didn’t tap him for “This Week”. I for one will NOT be watching his new show on CNN.
