EXCLUSIVE: That was quick — a week after ABC gave a 13-episode straight-to-series order to paranormal investigation drama Weird Desk, the network has put the project on hold. It will no longer be produced for summer as planned, and its status will be revisited after pilot season. While ABC brass had liked the Weird Desk concept and script for awhile, by the time the project got a green light, it proved hard to get production up and running fast enough for a summer launch while keeping the cost low, an important factor for a summer original series. Additionally, I hear there was concern, at Marvel and internally at ABC, that Weird Desk may be similar to Joss Whedon’s high-profile ABC pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., an offshoot of blockbuster vengers franchise. There is speculation about objections from Marvel, one of Disney Co.’s most prized possessions, to the new project. As a result, the network decided to put a pin in Weird Desk. ABC still has soap Mistresses on tap for summer.
Weird Desk, produced by Canadian production company Shaftesbury and distributed by ABC Studios, was written by Carl Binder and David Titcher. Based on the alleged real-life mysteries from this world and beyond, it centers on the workings of a clandestine organization rumored to be named “Weird Desk.” Working above the levels of top secret and above the office of the President, the unit is the destination for mysterious intelligence rerouted from the CIA and NSA. Tasked with investigating and solving occurrences of the paranormal, supernatural and sometimes extra-terrestrial, “Weird Desk” is led by Morgan, an obstinate, socially inept and brilliant man who would now be dead if it weren’t for his special forces trained partner, Rosetta.

Maybe this will mean we get the other 3 episodes of Family Tools?
The only reason any networks order these Canadian series is their low cost and it’s also the reason they pull the plug if it starts to cost the same as regular programming. The only writing that matters is the bottom line.
Or maybe they realized it was done better when it was called “Fringe.”
Ever heard of The X-Files, moron?
The truth is out there and we’ll all marvel at the reason.
I see what you did there. Well played
Wasn’t at all interested in Weird Desk, but talk about killing something with a butter knife. ABC waited and waited and waited to pick up anything for summer series, finally ordered them in early December and then expected it to be up and running (through the holidays) for a summer launch while being cost efficient? Their execs get paid for that kind of thinking…
Does Paul Lee know what he’s doing in general? I’m seriously beginning to doubt it. His taste is terrible and they way they’re treating writers this pilot season is even worse than usual. The development execs at ABC are better off writing the pilot themselves. It’s a real mess.
>> The development execs at ABC are better off writing the pilot
It is comments like this that make development execs think they have something valuable to contribute to the writing process and staff.
YO TONY! Youse wants to pull your head outta dat carburetor
and try some brains surgery instead, youse mug!
I wouldn’t mind watching both Weird Desk and S.H.I.E.L.D… there’s room enough for me to try both. Oh well; this whole concept honestly sounds like it’d be perfect for the Syfy Channel, pairing it with Warehouse 13′s male-and-female-partner-investigate-the-strange duo. They should pick it up, if they can.
Since Weird Desk *is* Warehouse 13 (even moreso than it is The X-Files or Fringe, from the sounds of it), this is an easy one for SyFy to pass over.
