After an initial delay, Nielsen just said it won’t be releasing any ratings today due to processing issues. The company will issue an update later this afternoon. Highlights last night included the winter finale of ABC’s Nashville, CBS’ Grammy nominations concert and Fox’s The X Factor.

Oh no!!! The most antiquated ratings system in the world won’t be up today? How will we know how to cancel shows way too soon?
When are we finally going to come up with some better system for ratings? You know that the only reason networks are still taking Nielsen seriously is because of the fear that a new system would give the paying advertisers a whole new playing field of negotiation (and way too much hand). Year after year, my friends and I always ask each other “does anyone actually know someone with a Nielsen box?” to which everyone always shakes their head. And we’re all people in this industry! For all we know, a lot of shows are actually doing MUCH BETTER than the ratings would suggest… I still don’t think the DVR/+7 or online viewing habits are being properly factored in.
The “no one knows anyone with a Nielsen box” argument is a bit like people who said the election polls were wrong because they didn’t count all the people who just don’t talk to pollsters.
I’m not saying Nielsen is perfect, but I don’t think “Unskewed Nielsens” is going to be an improvement.
I hope my shows did well in the ratings.
I know 1 other person who watches a show I like but Nielsen doesn’t count it!!! How inaccurate!!
Do a quick fix.
Used to do it all the time for Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy..
just make something up and everyone goes home happy.

I would think this data would be real time and reasonably reliable in any DOCSIS 3.0 cable system…don’t the boxes report back ? You can’t prove there are any viewers but you do know what the set is tuned to…..
Nielsen is like the SAT’s. Nobody wants them, but they’re big business and nobody knows how to get rid of them.
I actually participated in Nielsen ratings for a week in November. There was no box involved. They sent me 3 books, one for each TV, and I was supposed to write down anything I watched for more than 5 minutes. Including anything that was DVR’d.
