EXCLUSIVE: Good news for Arrested Development fans. The new season of the cult Mitch Hurwitz comedy commissioned by Netflix will be larger than originally planned. I’ve learned that, during production on the 10 new episodes ordered by Netflix, Hurwitz shot more material than planned and also came up with ideas for additional scenes and storylines. Hurwitz, producing studio 20th Century Fox TV and Imagine TV approached Netflix, which agreed to expand the order to what I hear will be 12-15 episodes. As a result, production on the show, originally slated to wrap right after Thanksgiving, was extended for a few more weeks. But, given the complexity of adding material as you go on a show where none of the actors are in first position and filming has to be done around their existing schedules, I hear 20th TV at the end of last week decided to pause production so Hurwitz can review the footage already in the can and take his time figuring out the best way to incorporate the new arcs. Once he is done, the studio will begin working on securing the actors needed. Filming is tentatively slated to resume in late January. The producers have some breathing room as Netflix is targeting a spring premiere date for Arrested Development when it plans to make all episodes available at the same time.
“We are thrilled with the direction of the show, with the footage we have seen and with the relationship between Mitch, Imagine, 20th and Netflix,” a Netflix spokeswoman said. “At this time, we are not confirming or announcing the final episode count but we are sure fans will be thrilled when we do.”

WOW!
When was the last time a TV series halted production because it had too much good stuff to work with!?
Found this gem on Netflix. Absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait for new episodes.
Sigh.
Surely they will repurpose the episodes over the summer to some traditional outlet, say Cinemax?
Why?
Streaming is the traditional outlet – of the future. Get used to it.
On the upside, Netflix is dirt cheap. $20/month, and that includes DVDs, just streaming would be something more like $8. Beats anything cable or satellite can offer.
Or you can buy a month of Netlifx when Arrested is released. All the eps will be released at once so it’ll only cost you like 8 bucks.
Nope, just Netflix, but there may be DVDs. Why don’t you want to watch it on Netflix. Because if this was a traditional network they would have a set number of episodes, for scheduling reasons.
Well, I cannot watch it on Netflix, cause it is not available in the Netherlands (yet). So my vote is for dvd’s!
Use Unotelly or blockless for Netflix in Netherlands. Works good.
someones too cheap to get netflix
As long as it is still out on time, consider me the happiest person in the history of the universe.
Take as long as you need. The more the better! “Come on!!”
I’m okay with waiting a little longer for the Skip’s Scramble sized order.
Stupid show. The height of mediocracey as we follow in 21st Century donorium.
Billy Bob is truth.
If only there were more critics who refused to give a pass to mediocrace work.
You guys are just a bunch of mediocracists.
Turn in your gun and badge, Grammar Police. “Mediocrace” is not a word, and unfortunately, we can’t have our own officers breaking the law. I’m sure there’s a spot for you as a Grammer Guard at Grammar Mall.
P.S. If Arrested Development is “mediocrace,” I guess that makes Two and a Half Men “plane garbaje.”
I see we have a Two and a Half Men fan posting comments.
What the hell?
Looks like someone thinks How I Met Your Mother is the height of comedy.
Don’t knock HIMYM. It’s not the best show ever, but I’d say it MIGHT be CBS’s greatest comedy ever.
“…I’d say it MIGHT be CBS’s greatest comedy ever.”
Said the person clearly unfamiliar with, say, “All in the Family,” M*A*S*H,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” The Bob Newhart Show,” “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” Newhart” or “The Carol Burnett Show.”
Jesus you have anything post Black and white era? HIMYM is great because it gets you emotionally involved. Would be one of the best comedies if there were no laugh track. Besides All in the family was EXTREMELY racist, MASH was not a sitcom and Carol Burnett show was a variety show and does not fit into the category. In the time we live in now HIMYM is equivalant to many of those older sitcoms, but if you grew up watching those other shows first run, you probably would not agree. HIMYM is meant to target this generation. Im 34 so I missed most of those shows first run.

The quality or state of being mediocre.
A person of mediocre ability.
This just gets better and better! A.D. rules!
Stupid comment. The height of mediocracey as we comment in 21st Century doofusism.
Sheldon T. is pathetic.
Shut up Sheldon.
Ah never. Nice try, the crew says the show is a mess. Over budget. Behind schedule. A complete disorganized train wreck.
Well, if an anonymous Internet poster repeating comments from anonymous crew members says so, it has to be true!
I feel like most every crew says stuff like that.
Nice try? How mad are you? You tried and it didn’t work. Are you not being asked back?
Were you let go before the end? Did a actor not say good morning to you? hahahaha!
Happy Holidays dude!
Best news ever!! Love this show!! Now, if Larry David can do the same when he films Curb and film more material, fans like me wouldn’t have to wait 2 years in between seasons. Come on!!
Now all we need is for Netflix to pick it up for another season.
Yes!
Remember watching this back in middle school and being so sad they were gonna cancel it. Glad u guys will b back!!! There’s always money in the banana stand!!
I think I just blue myself…what great news!
can’t wait until the new episodes are out. Will need a Final Countdown as it draws closer
This is awesome news, now tell us that since the crew have been back together they’ve had such a great time that they want to so season 5.
There are so many average shows that make it past 7 seasons and somehow this gem only got 3, Netflix deserve so much credit for bringing back a show that was so loved.
Hopefully if/when this is successful they carry on bringing back the awesome shows cancelled before their time. (Cough FIREFLY cough)
Rules of Engagement is coming up on its hundred episode, that is a travesty.
I wish I had your optimism about the possibility of someone somehow bringing back Firefly… But that’s just not going to happen.
I would love to watch more Firefly but thats never gonna happen Joss Whedon already said so because all his actors have new shows that would need to end for Firefly to go on: Castle(Fillion), Homeland(Baccarin), Suits(Torres), Suburgatory(Tudyk), Alphas(Glau), The L.A. Complex(Staite) which will not come to pass.
I love 4 of these shows so want them to continue so I have to cherish my Firefly boxset.
Aren’t most of the actors schedules open at the moment?
Will Arnett is free as Up All Night’s production is halted pending multicam retool, Portia de Rossi is free as NBC didn’t pick up Mockingbird Lane, Jefferey Tambor is free as NBC canceled Next Caller, and Jessica Walter is free as Retired at 35 isn’t filming (and may have been quietly cancelled by TVLand).
Only Tony Hale is busy on Veep.
It’s as plain as the nose on Bland’s face. Find ways to work in as much Lucille 2 as possible. Liza Minelli rocks that role.
can. not. wait. best show ever. Thank you Mitch and crew. Stop and start as many times as you need to.
Ask not for whom the bell tolls Ted, it tolls for thee.
Arrested Development. It’s dopey cult whines like it never got a chance. It got more of a chance than any other show you can name. Go ahead and try.
Yeah, that means it’s too smart and it’s fans are smarter than everyone else. Yeah, yeah. We know, we know. We heard that already. For years.
30 Rock is the same thing, and it has been on for years despite having worse ratings than Seinfeld reruns on TBS. Ron Howard doesn’t have the pull on TV like Mr SNL does, though.
So happy to hear they are bringing Arrested Development back!!! This is one of the best shows I have ever seen and should never have been cancelled after only three seasons!! This show was the reason I signed up for Netflix. I hope they decided to do more episodes then the slated 12-15. Another great show on Netflix that was cancelled too soon was The Riches. I really hope that this show can be given a second chance too. Make it happen Netflix!!
Everyone’s entitled to his or her opinion. I have been a big fan of some of the best received comedies in tv history, and I’m not sure any of them are better than Arrested Development. If you don’t like it, I suggest either calling the literal doctor (looks like you’re going to be all-right after all), or subscribing to Bob Loblaw’s law blog (Scott Baio can do anything Irwin Winkler can do, plus skew younger)…if that doesn’t work, I will do the chicken dance at you!
Wow, I just got blown…… away.
