The Argo director and star was asked by CBS News’ Bob Schieffer in a segment for the next Face The Nation about his name being bandied about among others for a U.S. Senate run in his native Massachusetts. A seat could open up if John Kerry is nominated and becomes Secretary of State. Affleck is a serious political activist, founding the Eastern Congo Initiative and campaigning for now-Sen. Elizabeth Warren during the last election cycle. And that’s not counting Argo, the awards-season stalwart that shines a spotlight on U.S.-Iran relations. Interestingly, he never really answers Scheiffer’s question of whether he’d run, saying he’s “got a lot on his plate” (in fact, his response makes one think of the “non-denial denial” scene in All The President’s Men). But really, why would Affleck, a whip-smart guy who’s quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s best directors and has the platform to speak on any topic he wants, give up his lofty perch for a place inside the Beltway, where everything is such a slog? Here’s his exchange with Schieffer:

He could be President some day but he’d have to run for Senate 10 years from now when he’s 50 then President when he’s 60. If he just wants to be a Senator and that’s all he’ll run and win in 15 or 20 years. Go for the Oval Office Ben you’d win but you have to stay married to Jennifer and I’m sure she’d love to be First Lady.
What a joke. Somebody takes themself a wee bit too seriously. Seriously.
Yeah, like when Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for governor.
Sheesh!
Or like that actor Ronald Reagan when he ran for Governor and President. But we all know how that turned out.
Why would he want to?
I know this is a foreign concept in Hollywood, but it’s called “public service”.
We need more smart, sensible people like Affleck.
He needs to run otherwise we get the loser Scott Brown again.
He can run and then just leave in two years when the real election will happen.
He refers to himself as oneself. It is impossible to like him.
Affleck would be, could be, an excellent statesman. True, it is a role he would need to grow into, but he is well on his way. His recent decision to drop a movie project in which he would play a con man, demonstrates that he is moving forward with intelligent, considered steps.
Ben Affleck is an astute actor who really knows his politics…

Ben would be a great Senator. I hope he runs.
