It’s not that much of a surprise, but Bryan Singer last night took to Twitter to confirm that Hugh Jackman will put on his claws and play Wolverine in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Jackman, who’s about to open as Jean Valjean in the Oscar-bait picture Les Miserables, joins Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, who are also reprising the roles they originated in the first X-Men, which Singer directed. I’m sure that more of that original core cast will be back — paging Halle Berry, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Anna Paquin and Rebecca Romijn — but Singer has become infatuated with Twitter and wants to dole out the info as he locks in cast. I’m just glad he’s back in the saddle because his first two X-Men films were the best of the bunch. Here’s his tweet:
@BryanSinger
I would officially like to welcome @RealHughJackman to the cast of #Xmen Days of Future Past. Very excited! More to come…

So, the talented and energetic YOUNG cast of X-MEN FIRST CLASS brings the franchise to life and actually gets movie goers to come see an exciting story, and now the dusty OLD walking corpses want to get in front of the camera and croak about their boring old times as mutants? Please, no.
Except that the core cast from First Class IS coming back and the original cast are being used because of the time travelling elements. Nice attempt at righteous indignation and snark though, fella.
It wasn’t just snark. I was trying to make the point that the ENTIRE “first” saga was RUINED by the insane decision to climax X-MEN LAST STAND by having Wolverine KILL Jean/Phoenix. FIRST CLASS (almost literally) put life back into the franchise by getting around that horrible filmmaking decision. Nobody needs to be reminded of the first trilogy in any way. They should have just kept moving forward.
Why would they move forward with a franchise that didn’t come close to hitting the boxoffice take of the original trilogy (or even the terrible Wolverine Origins)?
There’s still life in the old cast and characters and with their addition, this will be a hit. Stewart, McKellen, Jackman, Janssen, Berry, Paquin, and Marsden all look great and are hardly old walking corpses.
I’m sure the First Class cast will be part of the “main” storyline, whereas the cast of the original trilogy will be playing supporting roles in the storyline in the future.
Nevermind that the First Class cast is still getting top billing and most of the screen time if the speculation is to be believed, how on earth can you have a problem with a movie casting Sir Ian Fucking McKellen and Sir Patrick Fucking Stewart, two of the greatest actors ever to return to the screen and pass the torch to their younger “selves”, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy? Did you also have a problem with Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman’s supporting roles in the Dark Knight trilogy?
And I know you can’t be referring to Hugh Jackman, who is the only person who should ever get to play Wolverine and at the peak of his career.
Your Dark Knight analogy would only make sense if Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman had played their characters previously in the Joel Schumacher Batman flicks. But they weren’t and so your analogy makes no sense whatsoever.
Only in Hollywood would the likes of Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, and Hugh Jackman be referred to as walking corpses LOL…since the story focuses on time travel, I assume both the young cast, as well as the “corpses” will be involved
This is gearing up to be much closer to the comic book story than I had originally expected. As I recall, Wolverine is a core character in this storyline. I was always on board for this film, but now I’m really excited.
Yes he is – to both the future and the Past. I imagine though that it will be Mystique instead of “Kitty Pryde” that gets to time travel through her own mind…
I Wonder if the reason that Jackman agreed to this was due to the Alternate Logan’s Fate?
Didn’t Stewart and McKellan both say that neither of them has signed a contract or seen a script shortly after Singer’s Twitter announcement of them joining the film? Has that changed? Are they all signed on officially or is Singer putting the cart before the horse with these announcements? Granted both Stewart and McKellan have said they would happily join the film but that they haven’t seen anything official yet.
First class worked so well because it managed to break free of the shackles of the movie franchise (both in continuity and cast) and do something new and…you know…FUN! Every move made so far with the new film seems to reek of dragging what should be an exciting new franchise back ever closer to the jumbled mess that the earlier films became (and still are if we count the horribly self indulgent Wolverine movie). First they bring back Singer, a director who’s failed to make an entertaining movie in over a decade, then they bring McKellon and Stewart (who while awesome have no business drawing unnecessary comparisons with the new cast) and now it seems as if the whole gang from the first three x men films are going to stab the great work first class did in the face so they can throw a big old reunion special. Sure, maybe these are all just cameos, but come on, you don’t bring back Singer and actors like that to put them in brief roles. The first movie handled this perfectly with Wolverine’s brief and hilarious cameo in the bar.
Screw whatever anyone else says, X3: The Last Stand was highly entertaining. Ratner at his best.
still would need to see Famke Janssen as Dark Phoenix and Charlize Theron as Emma Frost ! added Scarlet Witch Selene / the Black Queen Deadpool and Havok
