EXCLUSIVE: Comedy king Chuck Lorre is expanding his relationship with CBS with a new half-hour project, which is instantly becoming a top prospect for the network’s fall 2013 schedule. The network has given a pilot production order to Mom, a multi-camera comedy from Lorre, who is behind half of CBS’ comedy series: Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Mike & Molly. Lorre co-wrote Mom on spec with two members of his Two And A Half Men team, executive producer Eddie Gorodetsky and story editor Gemma Baker. Mom centers on a newly sober single mom who tries to
pull her life together in Napa Valley. The project, which was developed internally at Warner Bros TV, marks Lorre’s first project under the blockbuster new four-year deal he inked with the studio in September. It also marks Lorre’s return to comedies with a female lead where he had success in the 1990s with Grace Under Fire and Cybill.
With three successful series on the air, Lorre has had little time for development in the past couple of years. This is his first development since Mike & Molly and the first pilot script he has co-written since The Big Bang Theory. Lorre co-created/executive produces Big Bang and 2.5 Men and executive produces Mike & Molly, running all three series. For Mom, he is teaming with a comedy veteran and long-time collaborator in Gorodetsky and an up-and-comer in Baker, for whom Men is the first writing gig and Mom the first pilot script.
Gorodetsky first worked on Lorre’s ABC comedy Dharma & Greg and has been a key member of his current crew, serving in a dual capacity as executive producer on Men and consulting producer on Big Bang, on both of which he has been since the beginning. (He also did a stint on Mike & Molly). Lorre and Gorodetsky are with ICM Partners; Baker, who joined Men last season, is with CAA.

Hey Chuck, this is Tyler Perry. I’mma let you finish making more sitcoms, but let me get there first.
I hope it will be more like Parenthood and less like Cougartown; with the success of strong female leads in Scandal and Good Wife why not then set it in a gorgeous villa in Napa, and not crank out another half hour yuckfest with cardboard sets. Nothing wrong with the cardboard sets but if you’re gonna set in Napa may as well make it look fantastic.
First of all, Cougar Town is awesome. And is not set in Napa.
Second of all, WHY???? Why does this have to happen? I thought CBS might throw the world a bone. Get into the single-camera game. Instead we have to have another Chuck Lorre comedy (although I do admit to liking TBBT). Why?
With all the success they’re having with multi-cams you do really have to ask, why?
The whole multi-cam versus singlecam thing is ridiculous. A good comedy is a good comedy. Some lend themselves better to one format than the other. Simple as that.
Multi-cam comedies are CBS’s wheelhouse. Just like procedurals. If it aint broke, don’t try to be ABC. NBC should have learned that lesson before trying to be FOX.
And if lightning has already struck thrice with Lorre, you may as well go back to that well. But the pressure is on Lorre because CBS really needs a new comedy hit.
Great title! They must have had the creative juices really flowing when they came up with it.
Gorodetsky is a treasure. Always has been.
I wonder if “Two And A half Men” might end at the conclusion of the current season and that “Mom” will replace “Men” on the network’s schedule.
I wouldn’t mind that. Rules of Engagement is hitting 100 episodes this year, and is almost guaranteed to end. Friend Me is probably a flop. So CBS could very well have 5 comedies ending after this season.
A show about a single mom trying to get her life together! Fantastic! Wildly original! Never been done! And the title is a delight! I know it will be just as sharp as all the CBS comedies!
You’re right Eliza, not an original idea and not a catchy title… but you know, I remember a show about a group of friends and it’s title was ‘friends’ and it seemed to do pretty well.
Since it’s about time for her to make the jump to TV would love to see Kristen Wiig in this.
Would love to see her in this show! But lorne probably has her under some type of pimp contract where she can only do tv for him on NBC.
Off the bat…not impressed. Would be if the lead were a person of color.
Anthony Anderson has proved that you don’t have to be white to be an annoying lead on a bad show. Then again, his whole schtick is that he seems to be channeling Barney the Purple Dinosaur.
Wow – a picture of a CLEAN SHAVEN Lorre!
I don’t know why but I really think it’s gonna be another show for Jenna Elfman. Not that I’m complaining… But I don’t really see it fitting with actual sitcoms of CBS… A too old lead ?
Perfect timing. Because 2 1/2 men are about to lose Jake. And I don’t think that show can afford to lose anymore main characters.
What’s with all the bitterness and judgment? Anyone in the biz knows that most pilot titles/cast are “working” and could change. What’s wrong with Lorre putting out a new sitcom? It is his career after all. Don’t understand all the judgement and cynicism already. Calm down, people, it’s just TV. Don’t watch then and just go back to Facebook stalking.
How do I encourage Chuck to compile his words of wisdom into a book. His random thoughts are doggone awesome (mostly).
Chuck PLEASE think about doing another “Roseanne” type show! That show is doing better in2 syndication than most new shows 2day! Also we need that kind of feel good, middle class / paycheck 2 paycheck, “original modern family” with a sassy mom type comedy. Not only because so many of us could relate 2 it 2day because that’s how we’re living but also to bring back the comfort of the 80s-90s generation where we didn’t really how good things were going for us & our family’s until we get to Y2K+ and understand the true meanings of inflation & bring broke! Please please please please please please please please consider it!! =) Thank you! -A True Fan
