Defiant CNN host Piers Morgan added more fire to his public fight with gun supporters in a column published in the Daily Mail.
Morgan has been at odds with gun advocates since the Dec. 14 Sandy Hook massacre, which prompted the British journalist to launch an aggressive pro-gun control campaign on his show, clashing with gun lobbyists, including his verbal spat with Gun Owners of America head Larry Pratt whom Morgan told on the air, “You are an unbelievably stupid man.” Morgan’s gun control crusade led to a White House petition by gun advocates asking for Morgan’s deportation because of his “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment.” The petition has garnered more than 91,000 signatures to date, prompting Morgan to quip on Twitter, “Still only 90,000 Americans have signed the White House petition to deport me. That leaves 310,910,00 who presumably want me to stay.”
He went further in his column. ”I will not stop in my own efforts to keep the gun-control debate firmly in people’s minds, however much abuse I’m subjected to,” he wrote. Morgan recalled being editor of the Daily Mirror during the worst British school shooting in 1996 when 16 five-year-olds were killed in Scotland’s Dunblane. It led to the implementation of strict gun control laws which Morgan credits with the country’s extremely low number of gun murders a year (35). He compares that to his stay in the US since 2007 when he first came to the country as a judge on America’s Got Talent. “Six of America’s 12 worst-ever mass shootings have occurred since 2007″ to “a woeful, shameful virtual silence” by politicians under pressure from gun lobbyists.
As for the petition to extradite him, “I can spare those Americans who want me deported a lot of effort by saying this: If you don’t change your gun laws to at least try to stop this relentless tidal wave of murderous carnage, then you don’t have to worry about deporting me,” Morgan wrote. “Although I love the country as a second home and one that has treated me incredibly well, I would, as a concerned parent first – and latterly, of a one-year-old daughter who may attend an American elementary school like Sandy Hook in three years’ time – seriously consider deporting myself.”
Morgan may not have to resort to self-exile as President Barack Obama today declared tightening gun regulations, including bans on assault weapons and high-capacity bullet magazines, a top priority for his second term. Of course Morgan and his softly-rated primetime show have to pass muster with incoming CNN boss Jeff Zucker who is expected to shake up the network’s lineup in pursuit of a ratings turnaround.

We don’t want him back America. You’re just going to have to put up with him like we did for so, so very long
First off, his real name is Piers Stefan O’Meara, not Morgan.
Second, O’Meara/Morgan was a subject of an investigation about Journalists breaking into Cell Phones of other people, here is what is on the record.
On 23 May 2012, the Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman was a witness at the Leveson Inquiry. He recalled a lunch with the Mirror editor in September 2002 at which Morgan outlined the means of hacking into a mobile phone.
On 28 November 2012 the Channel 4 documentary Taking on the Tabloids, fronted by actor and phone-hacking victim Hugh Grant, showed footage from a 2003 interview with Morgan by the singer and phone-hacking victim Charlotte Church, during which he explained to her how to avoid anwserphone messages being listened to by journalists.
Morgan said: “You can access voicemails by typing in a number. Now, are you really telling me that journalists aren’t going to do that?”
On 29 November 2012, the official findings of the Leveson Inquiry were released, in which Lord Leveson said Morgans testimony under oath on phone hacking was “utterly unpersuasive. This was not, in any sense at all, a convincing answer” and “What it does, however, clearly prove is that he was aware that it was taking place in the press as a whole and that he was sufficiently unembarrassed by what was criminal behaviour that he was prepared to joke about it.”
More will becoming out and Morgan may have to leave America under an criminal extradition warrant for lying under oath, and since his ratings are so low, will have to leave for not having a job.
Sounds like this blow hard doesn’t understand a few of our amendments. But why should he? He’s not American. He hasn’t pledged to follow our constitution. He sucks as a talk show host, love him as a reality show bad guy though.
Sounds like you don’t understand at least one of our amendments — the First one.
Piers Morgan will leave the US? Yeah, right. This is hilarious coming from the same guy who worked for Rupert Murdoch all those years. Where was his “conscience” then? Everybody knows that Murdoch’s media units like Fox “News” have always vigorously opposed gun control, and it’s not like the Sandy Hook tragedy was without precedent. Shootings like this have occurred before, and where was Morgan on the issue regarding his employer? What a joke. He is just grandstanding for ratings.
In what way is the Government of the USA restricting his freedom? If however the citizens want to boycott his incredibly bad show and force him off the air well there’s nothing wrong with that.
On the contrary. Dave was expressing his opinion as was Piers Morgan. I would say they BOTH understand the first amendment. Unfortunately, Piers and a lot of Americans don’t understand the second amendment.
What makes you say that? Is that person saying the government should silence him or punish him for speech? No. The poster is simply saying that he disagrees with Pier’s speech as well as his understanding. Doesn’t violate the first amendment at all.
Piers needs to earn his living in his own country. However, he cannot return, as his creditability in the UK has been tarnished by the telephone hacking controversy.
It’s safe to say I don’t the guy, and I don’t watch his CNN show. Ok, I did watch his interview with Alex Jones. The spirited Jones boosted Piers ratings. Made for good tv drama. Now back to Animal Planet!
How about we compromise and dump him halfway across the Atlantic?
Brilliant solution. I think we all could get behind this.
Sold. As long as it’s from a chinook and televised live across all networks.
Not those who also believe in free speech. Spending one’s life decrying people who hold an opinion that differs from yours is a rather foolish waste of time.
I’ll start the ball rolling. I’ll chip in the first tenner for HALF of a ONE-WAY ticket.
See the beauty in compromise? I love that idea.
Lets pack his bags for him. I say this not for his gun control stance, but because he is a bitchy little girl. England can surely have him back and please keep him.
You’re not listening. We don’t want him back. You gave him a visa – he’s all yours….
LMAO!!!
good riddance!
Watch out Mr. Morgan, the Statue of Liberty might just kick you in the hind end as you leave. Evidently some of your ancestors must have fought against us in the Revolutionary war……with guns. And you’re still mad about it.
You know what would make me happy in 2013? Tighter gun regulations AND Piers Morgan being deported (or, rather, fired from CNN, and not for his intemperate, attention-seeking exchange with Pratt but because Morgan is an insufferable, idiotic, unalented, arrogant doofus).
Absolutely. England doesn’t want him either.
I agree, I agree, I agree. I don’t care who Morgan interviews, I cannot watch his insufferable smirks and the little bits of spittle that fly out of his mouth. He makes me sick. Sick I say! Back to Britain with you, Piers. CNN, wake up.
you get it, joshreader!!
Yes, exactly. He is the worst sort of TV host–a colossal dope who imagines himself a great intellect, a crashing bore who is convinced he’s a world-class raconteur, a man so in love with the sound of his own whiny voice that his interview subjects quickly grow to loathe him (the Robert Blake interview is a classic and hysterical example; there are so many others.) Poor Piers. Soon he’ll be back on some cheesy reality TV show….TruTV is my guess….and forever off our radar. But God bless him, he was always good for a laugh, even if he didn’t quite get the joke.
He is lucky Blake didn’t invite him to dinner at his favorite eatery.
Don’t worry. Zucker is going to clean house. Wolf Blitzer may not even make it.
Piers Morgan is an outstanding journalist. The vast majority of people agree with him regarding his views on gun control in America.
I enjoy a great deal to tune in at 9:00pm every night to watch Piers Morgan Tonight. Please, CNN don’t change anything. What
Piers does is very serious journalism. What a jewel!
Reny Burrows
You don’t get it, dude. Piers Morgan is a talented interviewer and 100 percent correct on the gun issue. WTH is with all these pro gun comments? Was this picked up by Drudge or some other right wing blog? The vast majority of Americans agree with Piers. We do not want any more shooting. These comments sound like they were posted by a group of nutso survivalists. Fact is, the Brits have a more civilized nation than the U.S. and they are superior to us in nearly every way. Piers is a national treasure, and I, and most Americans, love him greatly.
Guaranteed it was a Drudge link. Only explanation for the madness.
I did not know national treasures can be from other nations.
Well, maybe you should hop a plane and tag along. I’m sure MILLIONS of law abiding, good patriotic americans wouldn’t be sorry to see you go either. You can keep the egotistical prick company.
He is an awful journalist who never had to explain his involvement in the British phone hacking thing. If he leaves America, it will be no great loss to CNN or America.
Oh boy, here we go…*popcorn*
Go, and never come back. It will be batchi if you stay.
As a liberal democrat, can Piers maybe just leave the US because he’s terrible? (And also a criminal phone hacker.)
Is it reasonable to call someone a “polarizing” figure if both poles don’t like him? That is what we seem to have here. The one thing that liberals and conservatives can agree on. Maybe, on his way out of the country, he can swing by the Capitol and use some of that unifying magic on Congress’ fiscal cliff talks.
Piers is an insufferable jerk who skated on the phone hacking scandal. However, he is right on this issue. Our gun laws – or lack thereof – are completely insane and need to be much tighter. Better to have this twit out there beating the drum than nobody at all.
LOL. True dat.
Isn’t that the whole point? He should threaten to never leave the US if he really wants people to listen. I could care less what he thinks about gun control, I just dislike him and would like to see him go somewhere else, maybe Canada or Australia this time if the UK doesn’t want him back? Or how about Dubai, they must have some sort of TV network there. He is a talentless, arrogant dullard and it’s frightening that someone at CNN would think that giving him a prime time show would be a good move.
Wasn’t a fan until Piers spoke the truth. Truth is we have incredibly stupid people dictating policy. SSRI drugs are involved with every single massacre. Its not just doping our kids, making it easy for any idiot to own a gun, or a culture of violence; its all three. We need gun safety – meaning make it hard to own one, license them, earn the right to own one like earning right to drive. Knee jerk gun lobbyists, fear mongers are not in charge. Majority wanted Obama, majority wants gun laws (and mental health care). Ignore the people who spread fear and nonsense – they are the minority in this issue. My 2 cents.
One does not “earn” a right. It is my right by virtue of my being alive. The 2nd Amendment does NOT bestow a right to me, it just codifies it into law.
Pehaps you can explain this curious logic. Being alive gives you the right to own guns?
What part of, “endowed by their creator with certian inalienable rights,” do you not understand?
Nothing curious about that logic. It was the basis of American law — “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights”
Being alive and a citizen of the United States gives us the right to own guns.
Precisely. Being alive gives you the right to defend that life. The right to own a gun is obvious, fundamental, sacrosanct.
I get what you’re saying. But you’re wrong. And I know you know you’re wrong.
The right to own a gun is granted to you by a government document. It is not inalienable. It can be taken away, because it is granted to you.
The right to defend yourself can not be taken away to you.
The right to legally purchase weapons can be taken away from you.
Simple.
Thisl, our rights are not granted by the government. They are granted by God. We the people then grant our representative government with limited powers to run the country. As the government does not grant these INALIENABLE rights, the CANNOT take them away. The constitution is explicit in this regard.
I’m sure you liberals try to convince yourselves that this is not so. It is so, no matter how much you would like it not to be. That much is simple. But to complex for your liberal mind.
“God gives us his okay to owning guns!” You’ve got to love that reasoning. Too bad the man in the sky has looked the other way on bestowing his flock with equal amounts of intelligence.
NO ONE has the “right” to drive. It is a privilege bestowed by your government. Driving will NEVER be a right. NO ONE has the “right” to own a gun. It is given to you by the government in the form of an amendment to the Constitution. That is something which can be changed at any time (although that will NEVER happen).
Your opinion isn’t worth the two cents you say it is. Yu equate a constitutionally guaranteed right to a driver’s license. Right there you have shown that your opinion has no value. In the future, either educate yourself or shut up.
for one we don’t earn the right to drive, driving is a privilege that is to be taken away if abused. Owning a firearm (among others) is a right is is granted to us by powers higher than what you watch on your idiot box.
If the bloviator is so adamant about living in a country that has no guns, why didn’t he stay in England instead of coming here where he knew what the laws were? Oh that’s right. They ran him out of England and he came here for the easy money.
I’m actually loving the stance Piers is taking on the gun issue. Fearless, fact-driven journalism in a country like the United States that tends to hate that type of thing(see Bill O’Reilly’s ratings). I support Piers all the way, let the weak-minded, fear-mongering NRA/gun lobbyists know we’re not going away.
I think you and Peirs are the weak minded ones. You honestly believe that taking away a right granted to us by the Constitution will end mass murder? September 11, 2001 over 3000 people where murdered and not one gun was used. In Oaklahoma City 168 (including many children in a daycare)were murdered without a gun being used. My point is physcopaths will find a way to murder with or without guns. So the real fear mongeres are the liberals giving you a false sense of saftey by preaching that outlawing guns will keep us safe. What right that you hold dear to you heart are you willing to give up? Free speech? The Spearation of Church and State? You guys are cool with taking away peoples rights, as long as it’s not a right YOU enjoy. Peirs Morgan is the King of tabloid journalism, and the last time I checked tabloid journalism is far from “factual”.
His threatening to leave may have the opposite effect to what’s intended.
Deport the gun sellers and let Morgan stay!!
The bigger threat is to stay.
This twit isn’t a journalist. He’s another self-promoting Brit, like Simone Cowell. Stay in London, please.
It was Simon Cowell who brought him here. If I understand correctly, Morgan was a disgraced, washed-up journalist before Cowell brought him over for America’s Got Talent.
I agree. He’s no more a journalist than Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or half of the anchors/reporters on Fox News. Same can be said for anchors/reporters on MSNBC, CNN and Current. They’re talking heads, nothing more.
Hard to argue with the maths. From the Small Arms Survey 2007:
GUN MURDERS
UK: 41
USA: 9,146
NUMBER OF HANDGUNS PER 100 PEOPLE
UK: 6.2
USA: 88.8
When proving a point dont use old statistics.
As of July 19th, 2012 there were 550 UK Murders, last year, 60 percent were cause by guns. According to projections, that would mean over 600 murders. Also consider per capita. number of hand guns per 100 people doesnt matter because most households with hand guns have more than 1 gun per household not person. If this is all about connecticut, keep in mind, the mother purchased the guns, not the son who murdered everyone, therefore gun laws would not have prevented the incident. Most murders use illegal guns.
If AR-15′s and other assault rifles were illegal the mother would not have owned one and the son could not have taken it.
Ergo, there would not be 26 people dead.
Also curious as to where you get your figures for UK gun murders from? The Home Office provide documents for such things and you can see from this official document (p.55 http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/publications/science-research-statistics/research-statistics/crime-research/hosb0212/hosb0212?view=Binary) that in the UK in 2010/11, there were 58 fatal injuries caused by the use of a firearm.
58 UK gun murders… not in the hundreds.
When proving a point, get your facts STRAIGHT.
There is a reason why he or she didn’t provide any links. they were making things up and it hard to create a research document under such short notice.
Guy, you’re a prime example of someone who misrepresents figures in order to advance a seriously flawed argument.
In 2011 (is that recent enough for you?) there were a total of 550 murders in the UK – that is all murders carried out with all weapons. Of that 550, only 39 were carried out with guns. I hope you read that and are filled with green envy for the UK’s gun laws – only 39 people were killed using guns in the UK.
The comparable figures for the US were 13,756 total murders of which 9,023 were carried out with guns.
Let’s analyze those numbers. The UK had 511 non-gun murders. The US had 4,733 non-gun murders. The US has 5.6 times the population of the UK, but 9.3 times the number of non-gun murders, which already suggests a disproportionate degree of violence in US society. If you look at gun murders, the US has 231 times more gun murders than the UK. 231 times the number of gun murders! We watch the same movies and television, play the same video games and have a similar social and political system. The one big difference is the availability of guns. But if you want to keep living in a country that has a gun murder rate 231 times that of one of its closest social and political peers, go ahead.
Now the classic gun-nut argument is that gun free zones are dangerous because criminals will always find a way to get hold of guns. Please engage your braincell to process the following fact – the guns used in these massacres were all legally obtained. If the guns had not be available, the prescription medicated killers would not have been able to go on the rampage. The truth is that most career criminals aren’t interested in killing innocent kids – criminals tend to kill other criminals over money, territory etc. There aren’t slavering hoardes of murderous criminals lying in wait outside your house praying that you’ll give up your guns. That’s a lie perpetuated by the gun lobby to keep selling guns. Most folk are decent and honest and as long as you keep living in fear, the world will be a more dangerous place.
But you know what, if you can’t see how having fewer guns will make the nation a safer place, I can’t be bother to argue with you. I’ve got more important things to do with my life than argue with a position that is so clearly retarded.
The problem is NOT the number of guns. The problem is the number of “Gun-free Zones.” EVERY mass shooting has taken place in one of these supposedly “safe” environments. Eliminate gun-free zones and these shootings will stop because the bad guy will not know who might be ready to take him out right away. Gun free zones are nothing more than target rich environments.
So these insane people will no longer commit atrocities and then suicide when everyone has guns because they will be afraid of being killed by a gun owner? I don’t think these people fear death. Also, why has there never EVER been a news story about a legal gun owner thwarting a public murder. It’s never happened. If this was a solid argument there would be examples that the NRA would point to every chance they got. And why won’t anyone give us a reason why they need assault rifles and 30 round clips? Are there a lot of good citizens being attacked by gangs of ninjas?
Because the news stations run the stories that they choose, and considering the anti-gun owners of these companies, they choose not to. Have you ever defended your life with a firearm? Ever wonder what would have happened if you didn’t have one? Well, I have. I was nearly stabbed when lost one time in a very bad neighborhood, and instead of being a murder statistic, I’m a self defense statistic. You are a sheep, and I refuse to be, but I’d gladly walk you into the alley where it happened, and let you declare that you don’t believe in gun ownership there, and see where that gets you. I’d bet killed.
As a parent I do NOT want guns in my kid’s school. You need to lay off the action movies if you think gun shoot outs at school would solve this problem.
Gun free zones like Fort Hood? Last I checked they had plenty of guns on that base but the killer still managed to take 13 lives while injuring 29 other people.
Removing gun free zones won’t reduce mass shootings. Doing things like banning high capacity magazines and restricting high powered weapons will however.
To finally put the Ft. Hood comparison to bed: the building in which the terror attack happened was a gun-free zone where unarmed soldiers get their hair cut and teeth cleaned. All of the soldiers there were totally unarmed, and that’s why Hasan targeted them there. The only way he was stopped was when base guards (who were armed) heard the shots, came to the rescue of the (again) unarmed soldiers. Soldiers don’t walk around on military bases armed to the teeth: in fact, openly carrying is often forbidden in most areas.
Oh, and Hasan did what he did without any so-called “assault weapons,” either. What would have stopped that terror attack would be to ban political correctness, not guns.
This is idiotic. All of Australia is a gun free zone, and there are no gun murders. You might like to have have proven a point, but you haven’t.
Australia has no gun murders? BWAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh honey. Put down the crack pipe. Next time you want to trot out such outlandish statements online, be prepared for someone who ACTUALLY LIVES THERE to call you out on your BS. Because that is what you’re trotting out here. BS. Loads of it. “Australia has no gun murders.” That’s hilarious.
Respectfully suggest you read the book “More Guns, Less Crime” by John Lott, a respected scholar who developed a curiosity about gun issues, began his research as firmly pro gun control, snd ended up believing (and arguing very rationally and persuasively in his book, as you will see if you keep an open mind and read it) that the use of firearms, and even their mere brandishing, has a significant (and significantly unreported) role in reducing violent crime. That is also the inescapable conclusion if you study the movement in crime rates in states both with and without the right to carry concesaled weapons. The gun debate is an important one, and it deserves to be conducted with logic, facts, and reason, not with hysteria, demagoguery, and a cynical rush to enact laws that are not only unnecessary but counterproductive.
You are right on that. I was pretty in-between on the issue but Lott’s book was an eye opener. It was dispassionate and soundly and factually argued. It did what people who are debating issues from taxes to gun control to health care should do – present the facts in an objective rational and persuasive way without name calling and hyperbole.
Piers Morgan is not qualified to address what should or should not be allowed in the US. Our Constitution is the basis of our laws and he can love it or leave it. But this may be a smoke screen. His ratings are just awful and he may be looking for an issue that will give him a reason to walk away from a failing show.
Can’t get any looser than Arizona with gun laws, yet Gabby Giffords was nearly killed and six people, including a nine year old girl, were killed. Where was John McClane with his concealed weapon that day?
You are right. All ‘gun free zone’ means is ‘here are where you can find a lot of vulnerable, unarmed people.’ Notice that DC pols and journalists dont send their kids to public schools with ‘gun free zones’ but to elite private schools – with armed security.
As for Morgan. Dont let the door hit you in the bum. Our second amendment came from an understanding that totalitarian governments will disarm the people to control them – and that has been proven to be true from Nazi Germany to North Korea to Soviet Russia. While there may be dispute about the specifics of legal gun ownership and registration, the right of Americans to possess guns is not going away. And, Morgan, it is very rude to park yourself in a country, accept their hospitality and paycheck and criticize their founding document. Go home.
No doubt about it, there is an exceptionally larger incidence of gun murders in the USA. However, those figures are misleading. The UK has a population of 62 million – the USA has a population of 311 million (source: World Bank). That is five times the number of people in the USA as in the UK. You have to adjust for the population differences before you arrive at a conclusion about those figures. It is still a grossly unacceptable number comparatively, but it is not quite a fair comparison without taking population into account. THAT is getting your facts straight!
“Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: ‘There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.’”
- Mark Twain’s Own Autobiography: The Chapters from the North American Review
if it’s all sbout maths, let me throw in a couple of numbers:
norway has 0.31 handguns per 100 pepole, 5 millon citizens and last year 29 people were murdered here – less than a third by handguns. now crunch those numbers…
I think Piers Morgan is perhaps the only decent journalist out there that has the backbone to actually take a position on this issue. Whether you like it or not – he states a position rather than act like he doesn’t. He’s garnered my respect big time. I don’t know why so many seem to think of him as arrogant, but thats’ kind of a british thing – they tend to come off that way. Don’t take a personally and applaud the benefits of his and Britain’s wisdom.
if what you say is true, and our congress which doesnt work, doesnt pass a law, he would, by your theory, have to leave the country. Then I will applaud him. Ps, did you not see him at the Queens 60th Jubilee.
Go away Piers. Not a single American wants you anyways.
Good for Piers. At least he’s sticking to his gins (no pun intended). So many of todays journalist or activist will jump on a hot topic then let it drop once the ratings drop. Piers is sticking to his beliefs… And he’s right, the right to bear arms doesn’t mean the right to have an arsenal of assult weapons without severe background checks and proof of mental stability. It’s easier to get a gun than a drivers license. This country is so backwards and f*cked up in their thinking. The right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness should outway the 2nd amendment, and more and more massacres like Sandy Hook prove that this country, and this law specifically, need changing.
The right to life MUST also include the right to defend it. If some lunatic decides that he is going to go out and shoot up a theater, then I MUST have the right to defend myself with equal force. The ONLY defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. More guns=less crime. Read John Lott’s extensive research to see that I am right.
There is no research anywhere in the world that proves you are right. You are wrong. Open your eyes.
The strangest part is his apparent belief that most Americans (who, based on his show’s ratings 99% have never even heard of him) are going to miss him if he leaves.
Who is this Brit? I think this discussion is for Americans to have.
(There is no reason to delete this, Nikki, I will keep posting it because it is the truth)
What I find TRULY amazing is YOUR COMPLETE lack of CREDIBLE EVIDENCE to back up your OPINION, your CONDESCENDING little ATTITUDE, and FINALLY your CHILDISH RESORTING to calling people that have a DIFFERENT opinion than YOUS these PETTY, UNFOUNDED, and UNSUBSTANTIATED NAMES!!!!
My hope is the new regime running CNN will decide that the five viewers Morgan brings to them via his show isn’t worth it, and bags him.
I just find this whole thing amusing. Americans don’t want him because he bitches about everything American and the British don’t want him either. Truly a man without a country. If I never hear or see him again I will have died a happy man. Someone who does not understand the concept of a democratic republic.
That isn’t the reason Americans don’t want him. It’s because he’s an unwatchable arrogant jackass/doofus, as many other commentators have already pointed out.
You’re confusing him with Sean Hannity.
OMG He needs to get over himself. He is a hack “journalist” with a terrible show. Please do us all a favor and leave. Take Alec Baldwin with you!
As much as I dislike Piers Morgan, here’s a GREAT idea:
Let’s show our support for the Second Amendment by trying to deny him his FIRST Amendment rights. Seems fair, right?
If you want to help send him away, here’s your chance:
