EXCLUSIVE: While NBC opted not to go forward with midseason comedy Next Caller, the network is staying in business with the series’ star Dane Cook. NBC Entertainment and sibling studio Universal Television, which co-produced Next Caller with Lionsgate TV, have inked a new deal with the actor-comedian to develop a new starring vehicle for him. Cook’s casting in Next Caller stemmed from a development deal he signed with NBC last fall. Although NBC brass didn’t like the creative direction of the show, which led to its demise four episodes into production, they liked Cook — who starred as a foul-mouthed satellite radio DJ forced to share the mic with a chipper NPR feminist (Collette Wolfe) — and wanted to keep him in the fold. “Dane Cook is one of the most talented comedians working today,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke. “He has a broad fan base and always fresh point of view. We are eager to get started working on his next project.” Cook is repped by UTA.

I miss Jeff Ingold more and more every day.
Oh for the love of God….
think they came to the party late on this one. he was popular in 2003, 2004. now he’s gone the way of gallagher.
“Fresh” and “talented”? … What?
I thought he was finished in January when he bombed with an offensive and unfunny hate act at the Laugh Factory.
Stay the course, NBC!
Between this and yesterday’s ‘Whitney’ announcement, I pray for the future of comedy on NBC. (I do want to say something positive here, though: Collette Wolfe is genuinely terrific – extremely talented and very nice. She has a rare gift for comedic acting, which is something that cannot be said for the witless Whitney or the terminally lame Dane Cook.)
only NBC would hit the iceberg and decide “hey let’s buy another boat”
Hopefully, Whitney will be available to CRUSH the comedy with Dane.
Uh, does he have a credit in 300? What is with this picture?
They should do a not-funny comedy night on NBC with Whitney and the Dane Cook show.
Whitney with balls.
waste that mo-ney… clap clap – clap clap clap.
No words…
Congrats to Dane. He’s a very talented guy. NBC is smart to keep him around.
That’s a shame. New deal, but, same ol’ crap. Does ANYONE care about this guy?
I actually don’t mind Dane Cook. I don’t think he’s some great actor, but he is decent. Mr. Brooks was a pretty good movie. His standup isn’t great, but I’ve heard worse.
But why did NBC axe Next Caller. I actually found the trailer pretty funny. Jeffrey Tambor is always a hoot. And instead they extend the orders for Shitney and Idiots with Kids. WTF!?!?!?
This guy is thoroughly entertaining. Good move by NBC.
It’s easy to see why NBC wants Dane in the fold. He’s like a more cerebral Jay Leno.
Dane is a very hard working and talented guy. Glad to see him getting another opportunity.
The problem with programming isn’t the actors in them. It is the lame concepts and writing. Stop being lazy programmers and give us something worth watching. Earn your money, or get out of the way and let someone else do it. This isn’t brain surgery as much as all Hollywood types love to pat themselves on the back with self-congratulations.
Is anybody actually running NBC, anymore? At this point, the heads on Easter Island would be a vast improvement in management. They need to stop trying to be CBS and carve out their niche in programming. Or, does blowing hard count as a niche?
Dane you motherfucker, did you steal my Steroids!?
He is a very funny dude.
WHAT is happening in this picture???
I’ve lost track – how many unsold pilots and pilot developent that never shot has he been connected to? Isn’t it something like a half a dozen?
No doubt one of the mainstays of a comedy with this plot line would be to focus on prank calls. So it’s just as will that it was killed off before it had the chance to offend people all over the English speaking world.
Ugh is Dane Cook going to make another lame joke about the recent tragedy? Hackety-hack
