There will not be a third season of Discovery‘s docu reality series American Guns. The show, about a family of gun makers, has been drawing attention following Friday’s elementary school shooting in a Connecticut in which 26 people — including 20 first-grade children — were gunned down by a 20-year-old whose mom was a gun collector. There have been angry messages posted by viewers on the show’s Facebook page. American Guns has now been cancelled. Discovery sources say the decision was quietly made awhile ago, however it didn’t come to light until today. “American Guns concluded earlier this year,” a spokesperson said. “Discovery Channel chose not to renew the series and has no plans to air repeats of the show.” The fact that the network is not even keeping repeats of the show on the air indicate that the Connecticut tragedy may have played at least some part in the decision.
The second season of American Guns got off to a strong start in April with 1.15 HH rating, 0.87 in adults 25-54 and 0.79 in adults 18-49, up 50% from last year’s series premiere. But the ratings subsequently dropped off and, in the end, Season 2 finished down double-digits from Season 1. I hear Discovery brass also felt there was no story left to tell, contributing to the cancellation decision. American Guns joins two veteran Discovery series that have been recently cancelled: Dirty Jobs and American Chopper.

That show was terrible as are all reality shows. Too fake, stupid fights. I’m pro gun and anti bad gun shows. Not enough guns and too many fake fights and fake deadlines. I’d rather watch shooting USA. It was a surprise this thing stayed on that long.

It was a corny show, I stopped watching it, couldn’t stand the show anymore.
Max I think you are mixing up “American Guns” with “Sons of Guns” which is an entirely different show. American Guns was a much better show that actually showed the crafting of unique and special weapons for people that like to shoot.
Discovery is killing off its quality shows and doing nothing to make me watch the other limp wristed programinig they will try to push in the coming months.

Sons of gun was bad. Too much fighting. American Guns was much better Family show. I was looking forward to see if Dad and son got back together after he went to school. Vey disappointed to see it gone. Can we see the show on the net?

I have been interested in any firearms for as long as I can remember, any programme on TV about Guns is good for me, as we have a ban on firearms in the UK TV or Books is the only way we can pursue our interest.
To cancel the show on a cliffhanger is not very good, as it was a family show as well as a gun show. You are also giving way to the nuts who thinks firearms are unsafe. As a retired range control officer, I believe that a gun is not dangerous, its the guy holding it who is.
Please bring back the prog it is was interesting to us poor people in uk who because of our idiotic government we can no longer own or shoot guns.
f**k you man, American guns is real every thing on the show is real, from the builds to the time they give the gun over to the own with a bang. they are trying to show the entire build of the gun in a hours time. if they filmed the entire build in normal day time the show would be a week long if not a month long, it would never go off the air until the biuld was complete. and no tv channel would allow that. so you must be to f**k*n’ stupid to not realize that so if your going to leave comments like that about a good show cancelled or not be prepared to get messages like this a**h*le ps: I saw I miss spelled some words and didn’t puy some in I fix it now.
when will people realize that its not the guns- guns have been around since this county was founded – this tragedy is a culmination of many things: the constant acts of violence depicted in the tv and movies, the failure of our mental health system, and the failure of the nuclear family.

You clown, the show was cancelled BEFORE Sandy Hook. It had everything to do with it being a horrible show that made gun owners look like a bunch of shitheel hicks (I’m also looking at you Red Jacket LLC) and nothing to do with the tragedy.
Of the three shows that were recently or are currently on the air: “American Guns”, The RedJacket guys, and “Family Guns” (I think it’s called), “American Guns” was probably the classiest. I think the real reason it was cancelled was probably saturation of the market niche. The reason that the re-runs were cancelled was definitely Sandy-Hook however. Yes, the RedJacket guys are goofy but they also are the most enthusiastic about their topic so I expect they will continue.
It was not the best gun show, but it was entertaining. I’m sure they will keep the stupid stuff, like chasing Bigfoot and ghosts. Whoooooo, that sure isn’t fake.
In all honesty, the show rather sucked. It was mindless “reality tripe (read: scripted garbage) and did nothing at all to show how a common gun owner acts. If anything it put gun owners in a worse light, what with every shot at a target portrayed as an explosion. Didn’t help that the daughter was blatantly trapsed around for the pubescent teens to drool over.

I think people need to take a deep breath and not make a knee-jerk reaction. Stop and think. We are talking about banning guns, and I myself don’t own one, my husband is a hunter though. But personally I have no affinity for the things. But think logically about this. We are going to start taking guns out of everything. There is rampant violence, sex and pornography on all levels, violence, bad language, sex and more violence EVERYWHERE our kids turn. I am hard pressed to keep my kids away from it. It is even in cartoon commercials where I have to cover my daughter’s eyes and ears. We’re taking the guns out of everything but not worried about all the other stuff????? You’re kidding yourself if you think that by removing guns you will remove the mindset that uses them against others in violence. They will just grab a bomb or knives. The damage is more limited with knives like in the China school incident. But the mindset is still there. Out of 12,000+ murders over the year, 300 were using a rifle. Our society is spiritually and emotionally ill. We can talk about the mental illness this man possessed. But really we all need to look in the mirror and take responsibility as a nation for how our children are being raised. All in the name of being “cool”.

The show is pointless, all the show is made just to show how big the owner has it. I have it all, I can do anything, I know everything, I’m the bigger one, and so on.
I totally agree. There was nothing bad about the show. I believe it was educational, in the way that is showed a safe handling of fire arms and and a better understanding of them, witch I believe is key to helping with accedental shootings. It showed a positive side of firearms witch is what sociaty needs!
American Guns was excellent show. The shooting in Connecticut was a terriable event. But it is time to stop punishing everyone who want to own a firearm.
Very easy to blame an inanimate object, but on the other hand I have to say, how do you stop crazy people from getting a weapon that can kill a large group of people in a short space of time.
I respect your wishes as far as your right to have a gun in your home, but how many shooting in schools, etc, does it take before you say enough is enough, does it take the death of someone you love?

Many people leave their kids to be raised by the big LCD window into the world, or as we know it here, the digital babysitter, kids grow up believing that’s how the world works, and emulate what they have learnt from the black box in the living room!
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy shooting guns, I respect them, but some people should never be allowed near any type of weapon, that includes slingshots, bow and arrow’s and the like, they just can’t handle any type of power!
We see what’s going on in America, over here(Australia) on the news hell if Obama farts, we know the direction, wind speed, and temperature, not long after you guys do.
The other side of the coin, The internet brings so much information into peoples homes, not all of it good all the time either, and kids can get hold of any information they want, so banning them from the TV is half the job.
This show was mostly fun and was informative, but as we all know knowledge is power and we have to be careful what power we put in the hands of the wrong people as well as the right, and some lessons are best left to a trained professional in a institution to teach under controlled conditions, under a watchful eye.

Grew up in house (Matewan West Virginia) of father (nice family) of John Hendricks, who owns Discovery Channel (Fred Hendricks was an architect that built/designed house. His wife Ruth was a City Clerk) of the person that ownes Discovery Channel. I remember John as a child (they moved out of house I was raised in when John was about 8 years old – he recently portrayed the Hatfield McCoy Feud in a very good light, not stereotyping the mountain folk (of which I hold as a proud heritage)…
That was an entertaining and informative show, which so many on television are not! What a shame something good has been cancelled for no reason at all save an illogical knee-jerk reaction.

How anyone can discribe the cancelation of a show that glamourises guns as an “illogical knee jerk reaction” I’m light of this senseless slaughter of innocent children beggars belief. It underlines what an emotionaly detached and immaturity is too common place with pro gun owners.
Then why does a show that shows firearms in a positive light, promote responsible ownership, and training, gets cancelled while a show like the walking dead, a show that has no educational value, that glorifies graphic violence, gets renewed.
Somehow I’m not surprised. Bowing to liberal pressure and political correctness. The more I know about Discovery, the less I want to do with them. What’s more, I never even watched the show. This just goes to show the extreme mentality these days. I don’t need it….

I love guns but this show wasn’t worth watching,I’m sure it was the ratings.
I watched a couple episodes of American Guns and thought it boring. As usual there is a little factual going on and then the scripted stuff and I just don’t buy into it any more.
I always like Mike Rowe but have to admit I haven’t watched “Dirty Jobs” in years. And as for manufactured drama, I never watched American Choppers.
But then, I haven’t watched much in the way of network TV this year at all. The last thing I watched was Mad Men and frankly I’ll probably not catch the next season of that either.
There are too many channels all of them looking for the next singing bass to capture your attention. Pretty soon you too will realize that “Hey, it’s a singing Bass. That’s stupid.”
I won’t tell you to go read a book. That does increase reading and different media skills but they can be full of just as much crap. Get a hobby. Build something, grow a garden or plan for next years. Read to your kids or grandkids. More then likely the TV and Movie stars your watching on tv do not share your values and if there is a character on there that seems to, well it’s just another Carol O’conner giving you HIS version of what he thinks YOU think. As a NRA life member and certifed “gun nut”I hated it and would never bother to watch it again.

These shows are a cancerous blight on our society. Sadly, even though TV has completely jumped the shark, the sheer numbers of useful idiots keep Honey Boo Boo on the air. Along with the rest of the singing bass garbage.
The show was mediocre at best. It somehow managed to be worse than Sons of Guns, no easy task. If anything, Discovery is trying to score points off a decision they made long ago as if they are reacting to public sentiment. If they were making money on the show, they would not cancel it. The media is absolutely that ghoulish.

Still, American Guns is worse than any of the Outdoor Channel’s Wednesday night at the range shows (except Best Defense, which is the worst gun show on TV.)
American Guns, the story of a guy in Golden who lets his wife walk around in a size too small shirt and a push up bra, who lets his daughter walk around in a size too small stringy tank top and a push up bra, all the while flashing huge wads of cash, using his guns to blow stuff up, and riding around in a helicopter for some reason. Seems to be more of a story of one man’s descent into madness than about guns.
It would be cool if Discovery channel would do some coverage of the explosion in popularity of trap shooting in our high schools.
It would be cool of Discovery to replace it with a thoughtful history of firearms design and storys like what features that separate a $1000 shotgun from a $300 shotgun are window dressing versus important.
It would be really cool to have someone like Mike Rowe or one of the people from Mythbusters do the hosting, so we get a well produced balanced production.
Given it’s Discovery channel, these of course are pipe dreams.
You actually think Mythbuster are a credible source on anthing dealing with weapons?? These are the same people that think guns fall into the shotgun or WWII rifle version and have no clue about ammunition or skill in those handling them. I stopped watching the show when they tried to debunk the bullet through the scope myth and kept using MODERN scopes in the place of WWII russian scopes. Their “science” is more tripe than fact.
The only thing worth watching on this show was Paige…..

Anybody care to guess how many children this year in Chicago alone died due to gunfire? I’d wager more than 20. Funny how the Chicago President and Rrahm “Never let a good crisis go to waste” didn’t campaign to do anything.
I feel awful for the kids but – let’s be real, while it would be great to prevent these types of weapons to exist, you cannot guarantee such a thing. People don’t want them off the streets, they want them out of white neighborhoods where white liberals want to feel safe. That’s why I can find you 100 stories of shootings that you never will hear about – like the 14 shot at a Miami Funeral earlier this year. Or the 7 in Detroit on a boat.
How ‘thoughtful’ of these politicians to jump on this and how ‘thoughtful’ of Discovery to profit from this show for 2 years as they didn’t care if other neighborhoods deal with a real gun problem. But now they ‘care’. Ok

It won’t be missed. As a gun collector, I was unimpressed. It was less about so-so quality firearms and more about family squabbles. I have to think that the only people impressed by the show were the actors who in my opinion were second rate gunsmiths.

I have to agree with Rons76! There sponsors will have to suffer! As of now I will watch there channel for a couple of days to get the name of the Sponsors to notify them that I will no longer watch the Discovery Channel nor will i support there companys products or services!
They will still be airing (the much better and much higher rated) Sons of Guns. So they aren’t swearing off gun programming. The ratings for American Guns were pretty bad if you followed it at all.

Have you looked at school history books lately? If you remember WWII like I do and then read the current texts, you are in for a shock. Beyond that, there is no way you will ever see Yamamoto’s reason for not attacking the US mainland: Too many guns owned by our citizens.

American Guns was a loser from the first episode. The Mom and Daughter were in competition to see who would show the most boobs, while the Gunsmiths were forever arguing about each others work.
The young nymph Daughter also had a little white dog she took wherever she went in her pink Jeep.
The ‘smith that had the most space around the waist also had the most space between the ears, while trying to convince you he was a master machinest. Just hearing him attempt to explain some technical point about the gun he was working on was enough to tell he was a “bag of wind.”
The owners Son Curt had a tru talent in engraving and seemed to be the most grounded one of them all, while the old timer at the front counter was an encyclopedia of small arms. How this guy stays in business I will never know, because they appear to lack the quality and fine workmanship one would expect when entrusting an expensive firearm to a shop for repair.
Last but not least is the Dad “Rich” a former Police Chief with a gift of gab and a stong negotiating skills when buying large lots of guns from collectors that they clean up and resell.
….my best guess was a trust fund somewhere in the family. Don’t know any gunsmiths that fly a private Bell Jet Ranger locally to conduct trades when a car would suit…
I read average “reality show Star” income was $11.2 million per season and that was applied to Deadliest Catch series.
I’m sure there was a lot of backlash after the school shootings but the decision to pull the show certainly was made a while ago. I saw the show once and it was interesting but not compelling enough to bring me back.
Cancelling this show is what is wrong with America today.
