EXCLUSIVE: Disney has closed a deal for an untitled pitch to be written by Steve Pink and Jeff Morris, and produced by Infinitum Nihil’s Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski. The project is best described as a modern re-imagining of Don Quixote. Depp has long been intrigued with that character, and at one time was attached to the Quixote film that Terry Gilliam has tried to make.
Pink and Morris met working on True Memoirs Of An International Assassin, a script that Morris wrote and which made the Black List, and to which Pink remains attached as director. For Screen Gems, Pink just wrapped directing Sexual Perversity In Chicago, an adaptation of the David Mamet play that was previously turned into the film About Last Night. Pink and Morris will start writing immediately even as Pink, best known for directing Accepted and Hot Tub Time Machine, eyes as his possible next film Contractors. That is a Relativity Media buddy comedy scripted by David Hemingson and Bob Fisher, about two out-of-work contractors who hit the jackpot getting hired to build the dream home of a billionaire. Only when they get there does one of the guys learn that the rich guy is going to marry one of his ex-girlfriends.
At Disney, Infinitum Nihil just wrapped the Depp-starrer Disney The Lone Ranger. The company’s feature credits also include Hugo, Dark Shadows and The Rum Diary. UTA reps Pink, Morris and Infinitum Nihil, while Pink’s managed by Mosaic and Morris by Caliber Media.

Gilliam’s Quixote would have been much better than anything Disney tries to do with it.
No director announced yet. Maybe they’ll go after Gilliam. Can you imagine a Gilliam directed Disney film – it may actually be a match made in heaven – if they don’t constrain Gilliam – ha ha, yeah right, it’s Disney, what was I thinking? It would probably turn into another Sid Sheinberg / BRAZIL war…
Depp to Gilliam: “Go F y’erself”
This is good news. Depp doesn’t need to be working on “Gilliam” type art films. He should concentrate on commercial tentpoles for a while.
Internet sarcasm
I will continue to hold out hope that we will see Terry Gilliam’s version of this story. Please, Mr. Gilliam, hurry!
Oddly, Johnny and Terry are good friends.
Let’s see if Disney green lights this project before the release of The Lone Ranger. Script development is small change while the production budget will be much more costly. Depp, sorry to say, cannot open a film anymore just on his name.
No doubt he will find a way to do it in white face with weird teeth.
What a terrible slap in the face to Gilliam, if this isn’t a way to get Gilliam’s movie set up at Disney.
We will only make this if Johnny can tilt at windmills located at Disneyland. Don Quixote was famous for tilting at windmills so that’s what we expect to see. If we don’t have any windmills at the park we will build them and they will be spectacular.
I didn’t see anything about Johnny Depp staring in the movie, just that he would be producing. Sounds good to me,and hope Gilliam will sign on as director. I don’t think Johnny Depp’s lost any box office appeal, he’s as good as ever. Evan though The Rum Diary and Dark Shadows didn’t do as well as some of his movies, I believe they’ll have a very long shelf life. Hope,he’ll star in this, know he’ll capture a very wide audience.
just give money to Gilliam, and back off!!!
Doesn’t Gilliam seem, like, cursed? It seems as though if you crave a controversial debacle fraught with commercial dread from the very beginning – Gilliam’s the “go-to” guy! I’m not saying that he’s not talented but “the luck of the Irish” traditionally hasn’t exactly been his card in the clutch!
Johnny’s the best. Who better to play the part
johnny depp is just fuckin awesome and he will be just great for the part.and for any part.he is the best actor and for those who do not like him…i am so sorry you are so stupid.
So long as it distracts him from ruining… er, re-making the Thin Man, I will be pleased.
Hope every thing is working well for Depp’s next exciting movie. Thrilled this is a go.
