EXCLUSIVE: My news will be cheered by fans of the CBS comedy and follows the network logging a second consecutive Monday win in adults 18-49 and total viewers. For those keeping score, the hourlong winter finale of How I Met Your Mother (3.4/9) was up 6% from last week’s half-hour episode.
That Monday lineup took a hit this fall facing competition from The Voice and suffering from the move of Two And A Half Men to Thursday, so it was important for CBS to secure HIMYM for another season - especially as another tough negotiation with Warner Bros for Two And A Half Men is coming up. Now HIMYM‘s 9th season is secure even if the network and the studio and the cast are keeping mum right now. (Meanwhile I stopped watching after Season 2 because I can’t stand not knowing who the mom is, dammit.) Of course there was drama aplenty culminating today when all the cast deals closed after hard work by agents and managers and lawyers and executives and after an 11th hour turnaround of Jason Segel who was set on bailing.
So here’s what happened: HIMYM is in the last year of its current license deal with the network, while the contracts of creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays and the cast are all up at the end of the season. Understandably, Thomas and Bays had requested a decision to be made by the end of this month because of the overarching mythology of the show, which needs to finally begin building toward that big mother reveal when an end date is set. As the clock kept ticking, activity on all three fronts stepped up between CBS and HIMYM producer 20th Century Fox TV as well as between 20th TV and Thomas-Bays and between the studio and reps for the series’ stars: Jason Segel, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan. It was well-known that Segel was the lone holdout with everyone else wanting to continue. After all, a virtual unknown when the show launched in 2005, he has a prolific film career now and gave the sitcom 8 seasons already. I learned tonight that Segel indeed “decided to bail and leave the cast hangung. But he just got turned around today at the last second. The show was literally dead.”
As for the cast, the HIMYM quintet is a very tight group, with the actors supporting each other. So it may have been a sign of camaraderie for Segel to agree to the final season. CBS has been very public about its desire to bring HIMYM for another season. (“We want the show to come back next year,” the network’s entertainment president Nina Tassler said in August.) 20th TV and Thomas & Bays also wanted another season. CBS and 20th TV both have a good track record in completing complex negotiations. CBS has been able to bring back Two And A Half Men, also from an outside studio (Warner Bros), several times in down-to-the-wire negotiations. And 20th TV has successfully renewed the deals with the casts of its top series after sometime contentious negotiations.

I wonder if Segel was holding out to get better deals for the whole cast, since he’s clearly the biggest star. Anyone know?
Jason Segal is not the biggest star of the series! Neil Patrick Harris… Duh!
Starship Troopers!!! How can anybody mention NPH and not mention Starship Troopers?
JS: $1.25 million per episode for S9
NPH: $800K per episode for S9
There’s your answer as to who is the bigger star.
Just because he gets more per episode doesn’t mean he’s the biggest star, just that his demands are higher
Those numbers seem made up. Last report is $120,000 an episode.
$120,000 an episode doesn’t sound credible at all. When FRIENDS cast were making 1M USD per episode 10 years ago, ok let’s say Friends was a bigger phenomenon, HIMYM cast shouldn’t be making less than 500K USD today. With the similar concept, they have become the 2. phenomenon I believe.
One was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. One was in The Smurfs. I think we all know who is the bigger star.
Jason Segel was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall largely because he wrote it. I think I read/watched an interview where he said Judd Apatow told him that he wouldn’t be cast as a leading man in anything (which is what he wanted) unless he wrote the material. I think this is what Apatow said: ‘You’re kind of a weird dude. The only way you’re going to make it is if you start writing your own material’. I’m not saying he’s not a star now, but it certainly would have been difficult if he hadn’t pursued writing.
Yes, but he IS ABLE to write. It isn’t as if any actor can just start writing something as funny as Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
via Box Office Mojo:
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: $63M domestic, $105M Worldwide
The Smurfs: $142M domestic, $421M Worldwide.
If we are going by the numbers, I’d say NPH has Segel in this specific comparison.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall made $105,173,115 at the box office
The Smurfs made $563,749,323
Lawyered.
Except that people went to see The Smurfs because oF….THE SMURFS.
You could have cast Taylor Lautner in NPH’s role and it wouldn’t have made a difference to the bottom line.
Segel did in the past few years Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I Love You Man, Gulliver’s Travels, Bad Teacher, Jeff Who Lives at Home, The 5-Year Engagement and The Muppets. You guys really believe Harris is the biggest star, having only done The Smurfs and Harold and Kumar movies?
Forgetting Sarah Marshall? Guys, that wasn’t as big a hit as the most recent Muppets movie!!
@Jennifer. NPH has done a lot more than just Harold and Kumar movies and the Smurfs. He was one of the most famous actors as a kid as Doogie became a household name. When he got older he’s far recognized as Barney, the Harold and Kumar movies, Dr. Horrible (Just because it’s a web series doesn’t make it not count. There’s a HUGE number of people that recognize him from that) other web stuff, hosting the Tony’s.
The fact that he’s done LESS high profile stuff and STILL is equal if not more recognizable than Jason Segel makes it simple as to who is the bigger name. Because Jason is more demanding and therefore got more money doesn’t make it less so.
Why make such a big deal of who is a bigger star than the other. Both NPH and Jason Segel have great careers, they are both pretty funny and have made a lot of us love this show. Both NPH and Jason have something different for the show that is why they are important as well as Cobie, Josh, and Alysson. Let’s just cheer that finally in Season 9 we get to know who the mother is.
@Lucian. Wrong. none of that matters compared to television. NPH is indeed an icon. but as far as movie prowess, he is no Jason Segel. I absolutely love both. but there’s got to be a reason NPH hasnt made headway like Segel has. both are seriously hilarious. maybe its the the over-the-topness that NPH brings to the table that is offputting for an actual major movie role. but as far as the show goes he i a wonderful actor, more of a stage actor. Segel is a movie man. which makes more money. who is funnier? NPH. hands down. b/c he is allowed togo overboard. but there’s a possibility that the real Segel is funnier. they’re both amazing at what they do and i think what im getting at is that they essentially have two different arts. one pitches and ones an outfielder. both good, but different skills.
NPH APPEARS to be more popular because of all the other television work he does (awards shows, commercials, etc). He shows up everywhere, so it’s easy to think he’s the bigger star.
I think it’s a lot more simple than that. I love Jason Segel, but if you took a poll and asked people who NPH was and who Jason Segel was, most would know who NPH is and respond with “Doogie”, “Barney”, “Tony Award winner”, “Dr. Horrible” etc. Some people would respond to Jason as “Who?” because his name’s not as memorable or “The guy that showed his wang in that movie?” “Marshal!”.
I meant Tony Award host*
More people would know nph because he’s been around longer.
I watch the show mainly for NPH, and the others are about equal. Besides NPH was DOOGIE, what up?
Lets not forget cobie she is gonna be in the avengers 2 and captain america and if they go forward with marvel she eventually takes over for nick fury so i could see her being a bigger star and Lily was a pretty big name as well
Many hardcore fans actually won’t be happy regarding this news; many felt that the show has been dragging its feet for a while and needed to go out on top, with the storyline naturally progressing to a Season 8 conclusion.
I agree. That’s how it’s seemed since around season 6 — the show will end in season 8. I guess the writers have no choice but to extend that now.
Exactly. It should go out while it can still be sorta good. No way the quality will be kept for a 9th season, Im sure the writers and all the actors know that. I was hoping this season was last..
Yeah, the show definitely lost its punch after 6.
Episode 6 I mean.
Great cast w/some of the worst writing on TV…you know, until Whitney.
I kinda wanted it to end this season, but at the same time I don’t want them to rush everything. Gossip girl made that mistake – as bad as that had gotten by it’s last season I think they should have done it justice by exploring the story lines better than just rushing to the end.
I just hope we meet the mother in flash forwards this season, and next season we learn more about her.
I want the last season to be How I Married Your Mother. And as a hardcore fan, I can honestly say I’m still in love with this show. I think they’ve done a wonderful job of just continuing an enjoyable show. And obviously, a big part of the story is really how Barney and Robin got married, so everything leading up to that has been important.
I’m a big fan of this series but this news is absolutely horrible. The show has run it’s course and needs to end on a high note. But greedy Jason wanted one more season so now we’re all going to be subjected to yet another season of them dragging on the inevitable conclusion a little bit longer. Hopefully Ted gets to actually meet the mother at the end of 8 so then we actually get a chance to see them fall in love and marry. I think those of us that stick with it at this point are owed that.
Uh, no, that’s pretty much the opposite of what the article says about Jason. He wanted to bail and had to be convinced to keep go another season.
your kinda an idiot it looks to me that jason segal only took this on because of the cast he was the last one to give the ok and even then it was after the show was called dead
I think Jason knew the show had run it’s course but by the sounds of it he was seduced back into it by the promise of a lot of money for increasingly broad comedy and because he’s greedy enough to want easy cash rather than give us a definitive ending we now have to delay the end until 2014 at the very earliest.
Umm, I don’t think, without knowing details, that you can blame the entire 9th season on Jason Seagal being “greedy.” That’s just a grand assumption to make. First off, maybe he did it because they were all counting on him. I mean if you work on a show for so long you start becoming like a family. Maybe he did do it for the money but are you saying you wouldn’t?? Either way it’s not his “fault” that season 9 is happening.
Also I seem to be the only fan excited for another season… hmm.
You are not the only fan of this show. I only stumbled across it by accident, but now I’m devoted. I’m a big NPH fan — Dr. Horrible is Mr. Wonderful! — but I think the aspect of this show that appeals to me most is the affection and real love between these five friends. We should all be so lucky.
I agree. I used to like the show a lot, but this season has been mediocre at best. We know Barney marries Robin, Lily and Marshall are happy with their baby. They should have picked a nice girl to be the mother and wrap it up with a nice bow this season. I can’t imagine watching the show one more year.
Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
As a fan (and someone who is in for the weekly hijinks and hilarity vs. the resolution), I’m thrilled.
This is me, as well. I don’t even care about the mother too much anymore. Honestly, Ted is my least favorite of the characters.
I can admit that the show went through a bit of a dry spell for a bit a few seasons back, but it’s been better than ever. I’m happy to get one last season out of them!
Tough negotiation for 2.5 Men? Really?
I do like HIMYM but its definitely time for the show to end.
If Segel was the hold out, that’s a shame. We may never know his motivation for doing so, but the fact that he was the lone holdout, really disappoints me.
I hope that we get to meet the mother before the end of this season, and watch the courtship progress through this season and all next season. I don’t know that it’s owed to me, as fan since the beginning, but I’d love to see the story play out this way.
I guess we’ll see how it all plays out, right?
Segel has been vocal about not wanting to extend his contract for a long time, saying he wants to do other things after 8 years.
I’m disappointed he relented. I guess they drove a dump truck full of money up to his house.
I agree with seeing how the courtship play out should be the way Season 9 goes. Trying to meet her and how Ted’s friend’s lives evolved was interesting. I’m sure the difficulties of courtship would be fun.
And I can’t see Robin and Barney’s engagement/wedding planning playing out a whole season. It’s not in their characters.
Another show I never have watched
Then don’t read articles on, or comment about, it.
You must be unfamiliar with this little concept called “freedom of speech.”
Why all the negativity? No one forces you to continue watching the show. For me, this is brilliant news. I’m not ready to let go yet, the show is doing really well in my opinion, and I’m super happy we’re getting another year.
I like the show but END IT ALREADY!!!!!
and Segel? just holding out for money. if it wasn’t money, they couldn’t have brought him back.
He has the film career, but NPH is really the star of the show.
Can’t believe this show lasted a whole season.
I’m super pumped!! I love this show and will continue to watch until it ends!
The person i thought would be the one to hold out was NPH. He stated in an interview he wanted to move to NYC and that he and Alyson kinda wanted to spend more time with their kids (seperate kids, they aren’t married in case no one knew).
I can’t believe there are brain dead idiots who watch this show and think it’s comedy. This crap can’t end soon enough. One more season will make 9 too many.
I barely watch tv and barely any network tv shows, but I love The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. They are like John Hughes movies turned into tv series. Stupid but sweet stories and outrageous but lovable characters. What’s not to like about them? Are they Deadwood or the BBC Sherlock? No. Are they even Curb Your Enthusiam or The Ricky Gervais show? No. But they don’t have to be. There’s plenty of room for lots of different shows for people to enjoy.
The last two episodes of HIMYM show that there’s still life (somewhere) in the show. Sure the whole mother concept’s dragged on but it still remains funny in comparison to 2.5 Men.
You make a GREAT point when compairing it to the AWFUL 2.5 Men. However, HIMYM is WAY WAY past it’s prime, and the only true way to save it, is for us (the viewers) to meet the mother at the end of Season 8. But history has shown us that will never happen. I remember laughing out loud in discust when Star Trek Voyager’s credits rolled in the last episode seconds after returning home. I bet you dollars to donuts that happens in HIMYM. Spoiler Alert: the mother is Barney’s unseen half sister.
Agree. Ted has been the least likable character for a while, but they’ve done a nice job of setting him right lately. Still wish Victoria or Stella were the mother. Maybe they should do a flash forward to the mother before he actually reveals how he “met” her. They’ve deployed the flash forward trick lately for other story lines.
This show is truly wearing out its welcome or maybe CBS just has nothing prepared in advance to put into that timeslot..this and 2.5 Men need to conclude next and this season respectively.
I stopped watching HIMYM when they decided to put Barney and Robin together
I didn’t stop watching, but I hated this. Least chemistry of all the cast.
Oh my gosh, thank you ! I HATE him and Robin together. I was really rooting for Nora. She was definitely my favorite of his flames.
Yeah, you sound like a HUGE fan. Can you not read? Greedy Jason? He wanted out, moron, and only came back to show solidarity with his friends. Learn a little comprehension before spilling stupid all over the Internet.
I for one am happy. I love the show and I think one more season will be perfect. If this bothers you, don’t watch. The show doesn’t need you and us ACTUAL FANS don’t want you.
If you were a fan I’d have thought you’d much rather reflect years later “Man that show was awesome, absolutely perfect” rather than “Man that show started off great but it really became a train wreck in the later seasons didn’t it?” It’s the Scrubs disease, where a once great show is now retroactively tainted by it’s money grubbing later seasons. Jason loves the cast so much? If he loves the cast he could take them all on holiday but if he loved the fans and loved the show he’d have called it quits.
I wished this ended 5 years ago, but now that it will drag on yet still ANOTHER season, why dont TPTB at least have Ted MEET the mother, and watch them fall in love, have the inevitable break-up, get back together, and then marry. DONT just spring her on us in the last 5 minutes of the finale, ok, guys? Ive invested 8 LONGGG years in this, so give us a season or so of their romance, please? It’s the LEAST u can do!
Did you actually read the article? ‘Greedy Jason’ was the one who didn’t want the show to continue, for reasons unknown (although probably to continue his movie career or perhaps he, like many fans, wanted the show to end while it was still relatively popular
I’m a huge How I Met Your Mother fan, and I think it’s a good idea to do another season, but make it about 13 episodes and wrap it up a little bit. Ted’s kids can’t sit on the couch forever.
What Movie Career for Segel? He is one of Apatow’s posse, and that train has gone off the rails. Given the amount of press Apatow did for 40, you had to know it wasn’t a great film.
I enjoy his work. All of it. But he isn’t knocking out hits left and right anymore.
Jason is the epitome of this. Muppets underperformed. 5 year engagement (which I loved) bombed. Take the money and thank god you have something that will let you do whatever you want starting in 18 months.
Segel has had the best film career out of everyone on the show. His films may not be box office hits, but as long as he’s still making them/getting roles in them, that’s not even relevant. If/when execs or casting directors get sick of him, and his roles dry up, THEN he’ll begin to lack a movie career – much like Hannigan does. I think you’re confusing the grosses of his films with the state of his career, which despite what you think, is far better than that of his co-workers.
Better than his co-workers doesn’t equal good. Plus, he is trending the wrong way. NPH will have a niche of some sort going forward. AH may have enough money to say F it. Cobie has bright things in her future. Radnour has the makings of a good writer-director going forward.
Segel’s best movies are way behind him. Box office wise, he has been in decline for a while. Plus, as I said, the Apatow gravy train is about to dry up. Soon, Apatow won’t have free reign to cast his boys in pics.
And Segel isn’t a box office draw. He will have a long and lucrative career in ensemble and supporting roles. He is wise to take a nearly 20 mill payday. This will let him do what he wants without having to who whore out in horrible roles just for the money.
Ah right, got it. You just seem to have a personal vendetta against the guy which isn’t letting you look at things objectively. You still seem to be hung up on box office grosses, when the fact remains, that unless NPH decides to prioritize his career over his two kids, Segel will continue to have the best movie career out of all of them. Hannigan will fade into obscurity, and Radnour will be lucky to make a few more indies. Not sure where the one who plays Robin is heading.
Oh, and Apatow had nothing to do with The Muppets or Jeff Who Lives at Home. Plus, he just served as a producer on The Five Year Engagement. And given how Segel wrote the script with his co-writer, I’m fairly sure that played a bigger role in him being the lead.
you described that really well, NPH is the most talented but JS has had more lead roles in features than any of the cast. NPH will have a great career though as a performer, Josh Radnor will do more indies and if Cobie Smulders really want to she could have a semi-Jennifer Aniston-like career (that may not be a good thing). This will probably be the last significant role for AH.
Everyone is saying “just stop watching if you don’t like it anymore” but this is the type of show you need to keep watching to find out what happens. It’s not Rules of Engagement or Big Bang Theory. I’d love to stop watching, but I’ve been invested in figuring out how Ted MET THE MOTHER. I haven’t actually liked the show since season 5, but it’s a show I just can’t give up on. Not happy about the renewal, it just means filler, filler, filler.
it is getting dragged out.. i mean… what was the point of getting robin/barney back together… let them go their own ways.. it made the whole breakup time a waste of time.
AWESOME NEWS!!!
