EXCLUSIVE: Here’s the new Viewfinder List, the entertainment industry survey which polls studio executives, producers and creatives for their top 10 short films, commercials and/or music videos. This is similar to The Black List, as the Viewfinder List honors short form content and the directors who made them. The list was created by Jeff Schroeder (Brain Farm), Aaron Schmidt (Langley Park Pictures) and Patrick Chu (FilmNation). In recent years, some of the shorts got optioned and some of their directors got jobs and in this day and age, it all helps. Some of these have already been lined up for feature treatment, including the top two films on this year’s list. Here is the website for the full list:

Josh Rudnick reps THE SHINS??
RUIN is the best of this bunch.
I LOVE Project M.I.C.K! Please tell me that’s being turned into a feature. We need more films like that in todays world.
PLURALITY is incredible.
I agree. Plurality is phenomenal. I will watch the rest and then report back on whether I still think it is #1.
True Skin!
Ruin!
The Chase!
Sushi Roll!
These are the directors who will be making features. The rest, meh.
Archetype is amazing, cannot wait for the feature!
Project Mick is just over 1 minute long. It’s a scene/teaser, not a short. In that case why didn’t Bandito Brother’s Prototype get mentioned? Gotta watch all these. The ABSENCE and GUILT were both great. Both cool nice guys who directed them too. UPSTAIRS is not great.
TRUE SKIN had great effects but that’s about it… The voting committee doesn’t know film. They’d be perfect to run a studio!
Couldn’t agree more – think this is the most overrated short in years.
it’s so obvious the list is for people looking for computer generated effects – who ever has the best effects moves up the ladder. not too creative if you ask me. where’s that broke-ass guy with just a cheap video camera and a brilliant idea when you need him?
That Skybox one has no effects in it whatsoever and was made for $240 by a broke guy with a (very) cheap video camera. Not sure if it’s “brilliant”, but I thought it was hilarious. I used to work with the director… at a sandwich shop. Looking forward to the feature length version of it.
Nice CGI on a budget for sure. But everyone in our office at least found the top picks here more like cinematic simulacra, vfx reels masquerading as filmmaking… shockingly weak when it comes to direction and basic storytelling competence. In fact going through the list, the amount of cool looking CGI seemed inversely correlated to the quality of the storytelling and directing. Not sure why we can’t have both?? But if you were to go on these examples you’d think they were mutually exclusive skill sets.
Who voted for these, a buch of 14 year old gamers?? I suppose perhaps that’s the point of why they were picked. Even if some of the premises hold hints of promise, nothing would indicate these directors know how to translate that into a film that’s remotely engaging.
Bravo to the projects for creating some slick CGI that’s getting harder and harder to tell from big budget efforts. But all of the top picks felt like imitations of already creaky cliche laden vfx features, completely missing everything that, you know, actually makes you care and interested in watching a film.
Sure wish we had a list of those who voted for those top 3 so we could make sure to avoid ever doing business with them or their misguided opinions.
True skin is fantastic. Acting a little choppy but as a full length done right- it will have mass appeal. But only if the studio doesn’t rip out its heart.
