EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Fox is closing a deal for Theory Of Everything, a pitch for a sci-fi action thriller that follows a disgraced scientist as he seeks to rescue his wife from a parallel dimension — a woman who was previously assumed dead. The film will be produced by Oscar-winning American Beauty producer Dan Jinks. The idea was hatched by Dan Casey and Nick Nantell, the latter a senior veep of The Dan Jinks Co. Casey will write the script and Nantell will be co-producer, while Matt Hawkins and Marc Silvestri of Top Cow Comics are executive producers. Fox’s Mike Ireland is steering the project.
The way they fleshed out the project was intriguing: Casey wrote a comic book that was published as a one-off by Top Cow. That provided a strong template for the concept, which is grounded in string theory and quantum physics. Fox took it off the table preemptively. WME and Circle of Confusion rep the writer.

So taking a bad idea and turning it into a comic all of a sudden makes it good? They’re alchemists I tell you.
It’s called making a property corporately defensible. Doesn’t matter if it’s any good, as long as it’s existed in a previous format, you can make the case that it’s got an audience. So if it fails, you can lay blame on someone else. In the case of the Matrix, Wachowski Starship (say that with a straight face!) put together a near 600 pg comic presentation to better elucidate the idea to Warner Bros. It worked, obviously.
I was told this same exact thing last week.
Dan Casey = best writer in Hollywood still under the radar. Congrats Dan!
What is this, the 50th Top Cow property that sold to Hollywood that will never, ever get made? These guys should concentrate more on making decent comic books instead of spending all their days and nights dreaming of “going Hollywood”.
Hey, at least it’s not some idiot in a costume running around like a chicken with his head cut off.
Superheroes are lame. Nerds go away.
Dan Casey’s comic was removed due to the fact that the idea was horribly written and did not sell. This may have been bought by fox but I bed will never be released.
Oh look, someone else with an idea about a guy saving his wife/daughter/girlfriend.
Huh, judging by what gets developed in this town you’d think a woman has never done anything for a man in her life.
Comic books? No, Sir. SPEC SCRIPTS WITH PICTURES!
Strange. As I remember, it actually made it to the final round of voting; it wasn’t “removed” from anything. And a simple Google search will tell you it’s gotten solid reviews from dozens of sources. I smell some good old fashioned jealousy.
Sounds like Fringe.
Comic Book, Graphic Novel, or just… Extended Storyboard.
Careers are doused in Napalm and lit regularly, if even a ‘pre-sold concept’ isn’t strong enough to make any money.
600 pages for Matrix? That’s an awful lot of ‘concept.’ That’s also how ‘Cloud Atlas’ got made — (however un-solid) reputation from previous ‘pre-sold’ (i.e. BO) of — whatever they (the Wachowski’s) want to call themselves. Will be harder to get their next project made though.
