EXCLUSIVE: Are the Germans getting their own version of the Scottish Braveheart? 20th Century Fox has acquired Arminius, a feature script by Frank Moll. Wolfgang Petersen and Julie Yorn are producing.
Script tells the fact-based story of Arminius, a German who was trained as a Roman warrior, but who switched allegiance when the Romans tried to take over Germania. At 25, he would eventually unite disparate Germanic tribes and rally them to victory against the Roman Army in the bloody Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The defeat had ramifications that would end with Arminius losing his life, but it halted the Roman Empire’s expansion North, and became the worst loss suffered by the Romans under the reign of Augustus Caesar.
This is the first script deal for Moll, who’s repped by CAA, Rain Management Group and attorney Bob Myman. LBI Entertainment, Rain Management and Radiant Productions are producing. Erik Olsen of Apocalyptic Entertainment will serve as executive producer. I always answer yes to that enduring cinema question, “Joey, you like movies about Gladiators?” So count me pumped for the potential on this one.

Great script.
Great piece from History and I’m sure the script is great. BUT….Will it work? Americans tend to root for the Romans. Also, a Germanic hero may not play well either. Germany is too big of a villian in our recent history and our most common foe in movie culture. Don’t know that this will work on a cultural, subconscious level, which will affect overall ticket sales.
Not a problem. They’ll just reset it in England. Or maybe America. No one will notice.
Americans root for Romans? Somebody should tell Maximus about that. Or Spartacus.
Also, since when do Americans give a flip about Germans one way or the other? Sure, Nazis make good easy villains, but I doubt it extends beyond that, and no American is going to associate some guy wearing a bearskin with the Wehrmacht.
A vast majority of White Americans have German blood. So your argument is nonsensical.
Script is amazing and so is Frank. Couldn’t happen to a better guy. Congrats!
Every post-Gladiator film that’s been made has tanked, deservedly so, at the box office. Sometimes you just can’t catch lightening in a bottle more than once.
Go Tomko!
If the story is good… who cares what country? Too long the Germans have been vilified because of what happened in the past century. There is much German history to mine for stories. If the STORY is done well with some attempts at historical authenticity – great! Most people love a good action film and the whole imperialist getting ass wupped by locals has always been popular. Unless it is Americans getting THEIR butts wupped … hmmm not so cool then. Good article. Thanks for the news. Look forward to seeing how this may evolve.
I think this is great. What about Attila the Hun? Fritz Lang had a movie series about him called “Die Nibelungen” that was great. It would be nice if something came along that changed our culture’s view (and of the world, bc of movies), so that Germans today don’t have to deal with the Nazi taint everywhere they go.
Hell yeah! Unleash heil!
I saw what you did there.
How sad that Americans, the most brainwashed people on earth, cannot discuss a Cheruskan chieftain who lived 2,000 years ago without the Pavlovian “Nazi” response!
It’s high time a movie was made about Hermann/Arminius. I hope they include the love story with Thusnelda. It has everything: elopement, inlaw problems, warring families, enslavement, etc. The son, forced to be a gladiator in Rome, died as a teenager. There is no better story for an action movie. I hope they do it well and get good actors.
It’s really past time to be blaming contemporary Germans for the Nazis. Maybe the movie could teach Americans some history.
