For the 11th consecutive year, Fox News Channel has won the cable news network war. The News Corp-owned channel finished No. 1 in primetime total viewers this election year with an average of 2.071 million, according to Nielsen data released today, an 11% rise over 2011. However, all of the cable news networks were down in primetime viewership from the 2008 election. FNC pulled in an average of 2.1 million four years ago and MSNBC drew 920,000. In second place in 2008 with a primetime viewership of 1.3 million, CNN suffered the biggest drop four years later. In 2012, MSNBC, meanwhile, saw double-digit gains over last year in both viewers and the key adults 25-54 demographic. Behind several nights during the Presidential election in which it took the top spot over FNC, MSNBC was up 18% over last year in primetime viewership for an average of 913,000. CNN finished in third place for a third consecutive year, down 3% in viewership from 689,000 a year ago to 670,000. With almost 11.5 million viewers on October 22, Fox News hit an all-time network viewership high with coverage of the third debate between President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney. With The O’Reilly Factor on top in both viewers and the 25-54 demo, Fox News had the top 11 shows on cable news in overall viewership and eight of the top 10 in the demo.

In the 25-54 demo, Fox saw a slight 1% rise over 2011 with 431,000 viewers in primetime. For CNN, it was the reverse: The network, which former NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Zucker takes over in late January, was down 1% in the demo year-over-year, averaging 219,000 viewers in 2012. MSNBC was second in 25-54, rising 20% from last year to an average of 290,000 viewers.

Uh oh. There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne….
Please, MSNBC saw double digit increases and still LOST!!! That’s how low their ratings are to begin with. And no, it won’t last. Keith Olberman was the only one worth watching and he’s long gone.
When your viewership increases from 1 to 2, you have a 100 percent increase. So it isn’t/wasn’t hard for MSNBC to increase their share.
Not surprising that Fox News is tops.
J.K. Rowling, J.R.Tolkien, Stephanie Meyer, George Lucas, Dick Morris, Karl Rove…
There’s a huge audience for people who can create magical fantasy worlds.
Faux News is comedy entertainment. As a Democrat, I watch it so I can count how many lies they tell in one segment and to watch them rant and squawk. Just because the ratings are high, doesn’t mean they are taken seriously as a real news channel. MSNBC is a good counter balance. CNN is loosing viewers to MSNBC. I don’t watch CNN anymore. I watch Fox for fun and MSNBC to get the the other side of things. CNN has lost it’s way!
If the lies are so easy to count, perhaps you can list, say, your top 3. Maybe FOX used forged documents to try and take down a presidential nominee. Oops! No, that was actually CBS. Maybe FOX altered an audiotape to turn public opinion against a potential defendant in a murder trial. Oops! No, that was actually NBC. Maybe some FOX journalists were discovered to have committed plagiarism. Oops! No, that was the New York Times.
I started watching Fox Cable News after 2002 elections. One day I tuned into Bill O’Reilly. For the first time in my life, I saw a journalist telling it like it really was. I was hooked. Ever since, I’ve watched him
for 10 years now. That guy is incredible! He has integrity, can out talk just about anybody about the issues amd is always well prepared. Does he make mistakes? Yes, but he can even turn that into a learning experience. It’s no wonder that he now has the number 1 and 2 books on best sellers list. He doesn’t need The Factor. He could be an extremelly successful author. Fox Cable News has hired other excellent commentaries too, but none will ever be as good as O’Reilly. I dread the day he is no longer on Fox Cable.
Truth in journalism is why FNC always will be #1.
Unlike the Pravda like other news networks, truthful reporting is obvious why they score #1 for 11 straight years
Honor in journalism gets the majority viewership, and respect..
Pathetic is best description of CNN and MSNBC ,ABC,NBC, and CBS News .Their reporters respective universities, from which they “earned” Jounalism degrees , should be embarrased for producing this inferior product..
This poor , dishonest reporting results in inferior ratings ..
No Mensa membership required for this observation..
Surprising they get paid!
Why would anyone in the world watch msnbc, otherwise known as the obama channel.
I do not know how anyone could watch MSNBC. i could say i counted the lies they say on that network but there are to many of them.I could say i counted the truth they say but there are not any of thous . MSMBC should just change there name to ONOBS( Obama new’s of bull sh###) becouse that all they are .once Obama is out MSNBC will fall and CNN will take over the second spot again. I would rather watch CNN befour i would watch MSNBC.
Fox is a republican network. Not fair and balances. Im independent and catch fox constantly attacking everyone not republican
I have really missed having the Ed Show taken off the air. I always watch the Ed Show, I looked forward each day for his show. Chris Hayes is fine on Saturday and Sunday for me, but not at 8:00 during the week. That is Ed time for me. I don’t usually watch Chris as often now. He can not take Ed’s place for me. I wish Ed would take his place back during the week.
MSNBC has come out as the political mouth piece of the O administration. Their new slogan “Lean Forward” is rather obvious. There is no attempt at hiding whom the network is “leaning” towards. If you recall O used the simple word “forward” on some campaign materials. Also, something to be said when Fox gets 2M viewers while CNN and MSNBC combined get 1.6M.
