EXCLUSIVE: In one of FremantleMedia‘s highest-profile scripted projects to date, the American Idol and X Factor producer has teamed with veteran feature and TV writer/producer Marshall Herskovitz for a drama series project inspired by the book Hitlerland by Andrew Nagorski published earlier this year. Herskovitz will write the adaptation and executive produce with producer/manager Alan Gasmer (Vikings).
The series is set in 1920s and ’30s Berlin, an electrifying, chaotic city at the forefront of literature, art and science. The book’s accounts of American diplomats and correspondents who witnessed Hitler and the Nazis’ rise to power will be woven into a fictional tapestry of political intrigue, pursuit of power, and personal danger — set against the backdrop of the most sexually and artistically liberated city in the world. “Berlin during the 1920s and ’30s was so alive, so filled with promise, so incredibly modern — even today, much of what we think of as new or avant-garde was created then,” Herskovitz said. “And it’s equally important — in light of the dark forces in our world today — to understand how a group like the Nazis ever came to power.”
At FremantleMedia, the project is spearheaded by Jeff Tahler, SVP Acquisitions and Development, Global Content, FremantleMedia Enterprises, and Tony Optican, SVP Scripted Programming, FremantleMedia North America as part of the company’s strategy to develop and distribute dramas for worldwide audiences. “Marshall’s vast experience in creating television and feature hits, combined with the elaborate social and political landscape surrounding the story of how one of the world’s most feared regimes eventually came to power, will provide him with a completely new battlefield to explore.”
Along with writing partner and frequent collaborator Ed Zwick, Emmy winner Herskovitz co-created series thirtysomething and Once & Again. His film credits with Zwick include Love And Other Drugs and The Last Samurai. Known as a reality powerhouse, FremantleMedia has been making a push in the scripted arena, which has yielded two series: Wedding Band for TBS, with Mike Tollin producing, and Hit & Miss for Sky Atlantic, from Shameless creator Paul Abbot.

Just in case you don’t go to Barnes & Noble where they have ten new Hitler books released every week or flip onto the Hitler (oh I’m sorry, History) Channel for another dozen Hitler documentaries. You know the History Channel is Hitler obsessed when last year they even had a Hitler marathon on Christmas Day. Apparently nothing else has happened in history other than those few years.
Reminds me of the King of the Hill episode where Luanne is watching a bumper “coming up next!” of what you describe and she says, “Those Nazis sure did a lot of stuff.” I think a well-done TV show (set in 2012 America maybe??) would fill in the rise-of-the-totalitarian/fascist ‘gap’ in young adult’s education.
They did that… It was called “Kings.” It was well done, but like most intelligent shows on television, it withered away into nothingness.

Well, people are interested in the Third Reich and WWII because it offerered our people its last opportunity to choose a world different from the one we’ve been living under for 70 years. A world where our people would have survived and flourished and been proud, living in a land of decency and honor.

If you think “your people” outnumber the rest of us, I invite you and yours to come out dressed in your SS uniforms, or whatever fetishistic outfit you choose for this decade. Johann makes an accurate and inciteful point, don’t attack him because he speaks the veracity. The multircial society that has been forced upon us has been a regressive, violent, ugly and unmitigated failure. “Diversity” is a weakness, it’s concomitants are crime, inhospitality, drugs and every other degradation. The Third Reich was a place of honour, order, responsibility and progress. A place of responsible adults living a salubrious and good life. Decent people. Shut off the TV and learn about history.
I think maybe because Hitler, the Grand Poobah of the Nazis, brought about WWII, took over much of the world into his imperial fascist dictatorship, mass murdered something like 21 million people, including the “eugenic euthanasia” of the disabled, mentally ill – children, as well as adults, in Germany itself, before WWII – Poles and other Eastern Europeans, gays, dissidents, and of course nearly wiping out the Jewish people by many means – including shootings, gassing, slave labor, and gruesome medical “experiments” that substituted living people for the lab rats of the day. And much of this happened during the lifetimes of many people alive today, up to 15 years prior to WWII, Baby Boomers, and only 15 -20 years prior to many people born afterward – so several generations of people in the US and all over the world. And the madness involved all of Europe, parts of Asia, Africa, North America, Australia, and South America after the war. In short, all the continents except Antarctica – hence the name “World War II”. I don’t believe any other event has come even close.
Just my opinion – but I think that may be why people have found Nazis and Hitler horrifying and fascinating since WWII. Not surprising. How could one person change the world so drastically in such a short time? Perhaps you were born later and don’t understand what the hoopla is all about. Just a guess – I could be wrong.
You are right on the money. I am 61 and I have been reading about the Third Reich and the Second World War since I was in elementary school. My dad served in WW II and loved history, but my fascination with the Third Reich stems from the complete disbelief I sometimes feel about that period. How did Hitler co-opt 70 million Germans into trading away their morals and willfully ignoring the systematic deportation and murder of so many innocent people? Because he was initially successful at restoring German pride and transforming a chaotic nation into a world power again, it is easy to admire certain aspects of Germany’s resurgence, like the patriotism and nationalistic fervor it created. But the successes were hopelessly intertwined with the evil that permeated Nazi ideology. It was an amazing and tragic era.
We get what the hoopla is about, we’re just sick of hearing it and being compared to today’s Liberty/Libertarian (read:TEA) aspirations of some members of the Republican party, which is a Liberty movement, not an Aryan Brotherhood run Corptocracy movement. And by the way, it was 6 million, not 21 million, and even if you count the people that died on the battlefield from German military operations, you’re still wrong. And we never hear about the 12 million people that starved to death in the Ukraine in the mid-30′s under Stalin, or the 80 million deaths under Mao in China. It’s always Hitler and the plight of ‘the chosen people.’
Maybe someone is trying to alert us to history repeating itself, only here in the U.S.!
Yes, there are reasons for this obsession, especially given our current culture.
1. Hitler was a fascist, or right-wing, version of totalitarian regimes. Therefore, it is a handy and constant 20th century target of the left to keep before the public, as if the danger always lies in too much conservatism or Christian-rooted nationalism. A liberal educational system swill pawns such a tendency. Therefore interest in history is eclipsed by interest in political ideology.
2. We are a culture of death. This comes with the emptiness of secularism that sees hopes dashed once too often. People fear death, yet are also captivated by it’s mystery and horror. Hitler epitomizes it despite his grandiose vision of a Reich.
3. Evil is alluring as long as we think we can only touch it and still avoid its consequences. In this case how evil came into a expression in a sophisticated, educated society and culture (yet spiritually nominal), and have it embodied in one man’s vision.
4. We have lots of German ancestry in our land that tries to determine ad nauseum what it is about the Germanic temperment and race that would lead it to a Hitler.
5. We have lots of central European ancestry left within the States that causes us to still look back over our cultural heritage.
6. Man is attracted to power and its use to create a “better world” for people. That such dominance of power also never acts apart from some darker motivation seems to escape us.
All too often I see Hitler classified as Right Wing. In my opinion that is an error if taken in modern context. Yes, in his times, communism was considered left wing and Nazism was considered right wing, but they were both claiming to be socialists.
The Nazi regime tore down all the traditional morals of the times. High School girls were encouraged to have children for the Reich – unmarried. Which box would you put that in: liberal or conservative?
Hitler fought against the established religions and sought to make them powerless to influence the people. Nazi’s became atheists. Which box does that fit in: liberal or conservative?
Hitler stroked up the pride of the Teutonic people and divided the people into good and bad citizens. That technique has been used quite often and currently the class most despised is my class of white males (wish I could say rich, but I am not).
I was quite shocked when I heard the President say he thought the country needed an armed national police force as strong as the military (2008). And then of course there was the purchasing of 450 million rounds of hollow point bullets for homeland security, and I got the point, and millions more for other government agencies we generally don’t think of as engaging in combat (IRS).
The importance of understanding Hitler is to see how easily liberty can be lost. As part of my German Culture class I watched a Hitler speech in German, and saw the pretty high school girls throwing him kisses. It turned my stomach.

Any idea why there is a near complete blackout in entertainment/media on the crimes against humanity committed by Stalin, Mao, Trotsykites, Bolsheviks,et al in the hundreds of millions of victims? I guess some victims are more equal and more valuable than others. I guess victims are categorized in importance relative to the amount of art and gold they owned when eliminated? It is clear those who love communism and control the dissemination of information (school unions and establishment/government/media complex) still approve of the genocide and would commit it again if they have the chance. Be very afraid of a miniscule political minority who wield power disproportionate to their population pronouncing goals of “equality” for all and “redistributive justice” for all. There are countless parallels between 1920′s Germany and current day America. History has proven that tyrannies are not born overnight, but are a progressive decline, with many stages leading up to a dictatorship. Obama’s power grabs today read like a history book.

The average American is right. But political definitions change. The Nazis were the right wing extreme in their time and place, while the German Communists were the left wing extreme. However both would be considered left wing on the modern American spectrum.
It reminds me of the old joke about the British Prime Minister who comes to the US and explains that “In Britain we have two political parties. I’m from the Labour Party, or as you would know them in America the socialists. We also have the Conservative Party, or as you would know them in America the socialists”.
Most American parties are to the right of the whole spectrum in Europe and have been for a long time.

The major and most dangerous elements of Nazi ideology can only be attributed to far right extremism.
Racial superiority and master race theory. Racial purity. Ultra nationalism closely associated with race ( if you called yourself German in 1942 you were also calling yourself Aryan ). These racial ideas were at the heart of Nazi ideology and far outweighed in consequence any other social economic policy implemented.
This is why Nazism has and will forever be closely associated with the far right.

That all depends on how accurate they are with the project. Perhaps they will try to equate the Brown Shirts and SS to the Tea Party. If they do the American lemmings who do not understand history will go over that cliff with them. Those that understand history, however, know that the NAZIs (National SOCIALIST Party) were to the right of the Communists. They rose to power by popular appeal due to the absurdly punitive Treaty of Versailles and the enormously unfair reparations that Germany suffered under starting in 1919. The German economy was destroyed with outrageous hyper-inflation their money was rendered worthless. The Nazis were certainly violent thugs but it was the underlying socio-economic condition that allowed them to gain a foothold.
This is why Greece is currently experiencing a wave of Neo-Nazi popularity. When a society falls apart the extreme elements suddenly gain credibility. What many people don’t realize is that the Nazis printed their own money and they were able to escape the reparation induced depression the country suffered under. They were stupid to start another war and they were stupid to round up the Jews.

There were atrocities inflicted by all sides in World War I and the vindictiveness of the Treaty of Versailles did everything to encourage an inevitably violent confrontation with Germany at a later date, because an entire nation was being punished for something that was ultimately initiated by the act of a Serbian extremist, which activated a domino effect of antiquated yet still binding treaties. It was senseless, and such vindictiveness even more senseless, as human nature abides much as physics with every action producing an equal and opposite one. I say the Allies reaped what they sowed, wrong or right, because morality has nothing to do with describing facts–it is merely a perspective added by human emotion which is notoriously fallible.

We should know and remember that the Weimar Republic, the “liberals” allowing the Cabaret life, were very successful and determined at industrial spying, training pilots to fly gliders (powered planes were limited by the surrender agreement) and setting up the skeleton of the Germany army.
The Germans wanted revenge and their land back before Hitler arrived. And he made things much, much worse. We should be thankful he was so impatient, launching the wars in the West and East years before the generals felt the military was ready.
Also, the Americans and British knew of the death camps for Jews — and millions of others — long before the end of the war.

The Weimar Republic carried out testing and development of military weapons in Communist Russia from the early 1920s through the early 30s – tanks, airplanes and heavy artillery. The Bolsheviks were only too happy to cooperate and learn from the knowledge of German scientists and weapons experts. I think William Shirer’s “Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” is the most comprehensive volume (1000+ pages in paperback) of that era.
Read “The Arms of Krupp” to get an idea of the industrialization it took to start and fight this war in Germany.

The reason they keep playing Hitler is because one the lefts favorite games in this country is to compare Republicans to Hitler and the Nazi party. You will see subtle digs at anyone on the right in this movie. And of course the left wants to keep Hitler fresh in everyone’s mind so when they run around screaming NAZI! about anyone who dares disagree with them the gullible people in this country will buy it. The left doesn’t show Stalin or Lenin because the left can’t compare those two to anyone on the right.
Leftists (especially those dominant in Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry) will never hold Lenin or Stalin, or any other commie dictator (Mao, Ho, Castro, Pol Pot, Kim, you name it) in a critical light because they LOVE guys like this. Interesting observation! Could it be because German-Americans are the single largest minority in the U.S.? Just as Mr. Nagorski points out in the Forward, there are close ties between the “Good Victors” and the Germans. That’s a large viewing audience made up of people like myself whose family was deeply affected by this struggle. I will always want to know more about it!

The US was in a weapons race with the Soviets after WW2, the Soviets exterminated more people than the Nazis but since they were socialists they get a pass.
A visit to any war museum or aircraft museum tells you very quickly that the Nazis were far ahead in many weapons technologies.
If they had waited a couple of years before starting the war, they might have had a fleet of jets, nuclear weapons, accurate cruise missiles, accurate stand-off air to ship missiles.
This could be a good movie, about how the allies prevented the anti-human secular socialists from walking off withe all of the tech from the Nazis.

I read a pamphlet written back in the ’50s in Germany that discussed Hitler as being the devil incarnate. While that was funny, it got a little scarier when the writer reviled that Hitler had urged his generals after the fall of France to board all available shipping, much like the Dunkirk evacuation, and head for southern England. The Generals claimed the men were too tired and should wait for spring. This allowed for the famous “Battle for Britain” to take place in the air, and for England to be resupplied with weapons and ammunition. The scary thing is that any military tactician would tell you, had Germany’s generals gone along with the plan, Britain would have fallen in one or two months, North Africa would not have happened, and Russia would not have received military aid from America. Just to let you know how lucky we were…
Oh and while the flotilla was setting off for England,the English fleet would have had to been committed to stop just when the German Luftwaffe was at it’s strongest. The fleet would have been badly beaten and many major ships sunk leading to an even more rapid demoralizing of the English and a quicker surrender. Churchill had yet to rally the people. If this is a Hollywood production you can forget any historical accuracy. On the other hand if it were historically honest it could be a very interesting lesson, especially for today’s Progressives.

I wish they would have used Richard J Evans trilogy of books as the source material. He takes the German outlook from Bismarck to 1945. It really explains the thought processes of the German people as a nation. The books are: The Coming of the Third Reich, The Third Reich in Power, and The Third Reich at War. All excellent books

I hope this is a real history and not a revisionist history of the rise of Nazi ideology. Hitler was Time magazines Man of the Year. FDR modeled many of this works programs from him. The Eugenics ideas were taken from American and English Leftists. There were huge Nazi American Bund rallies here in the USA. Hitler didnt smoke, drink and was a vegetarian. The German people had jobs, pride and food again. It was a cult of personality. He was the toast of the town and when he annexed other countries the West bent over backwards to appease him.
We all know what happened next.
Time’s Man of the year was never about who was the biggest good guy, it was about who was influential and made an impact, for better or worse. Hitler certainly had impact, including well before the outbreak of war, as you correctly point out. Its always interesting to look back on history, but sometimes its more interesting to look back to a time and then try and look forward from that time through the eyes of those actually living it. Hitler becomes a more easily understood phenomenon when viewed that way.
