Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for Identity Thief, the Seth Gordon-directed comedy that stars Jason Bateman as the victim of a woman who has swiped his identity and destroyed his credit. Somehow, his only way out is to apprehend the thief and accompany her on a road trip. She’s played by Melissa McCarthy, and it looks like a strong opportunity for McCarthy to show off some of the sharpest physical comic skills of any actress I’ve seen in forever. McCarthy, relatively refined in her Emmy-winning role in Mike & Molly, let those skills shine in Bridesmaids and practically stole the movie. She did it again in Saturday Night Live, in an outrageous hosting stint. Will a whole movie’s worth of this be too much, or just right? The film opens February 8.

Damn! BIG HIT!!
“Will a whole movie’s worth of this be too much, or just right?”
Excellent question, Mike.
It will be and is too much. She needs to do a romantic comedy where she is the object of desire and affection. Women will identify with her but not when she’s a loud-mouth obnoxious harpy. She also plays the same part in “The Heat” with Sandra Bullock. That’s three movies where she’s doing the same exact part. She’s getting terrible advice on what movie roles to take. Melissa is very charming and sweet and funny on Mike & Molly. Let’s see her in the Kate Hudson part in a rom-com with a skinny pretty girl as the best friend who gives her lousy dating advice.
Good luck getting that financed in thin women-obsessed Hollywood.
Looks a lot funnier than that Streisand road movie. Sorry Seth going to see this instead!
MM is playing the same role in every movie. Gets old after a bit. I’m happy for her fifteen minutes, but I don’t know how she sustains it.
Her outtakes are the funniest bit in THIS IS 40, too…
Melissa baby is too cool for this fool. Love her and the Bate Man in same film. AS FAR AS DOING THE SAME? Playing the same? How long is the list go for that with Hollywood stars, directors and studios making B.O. and Oscar winning successes following the same formula over and over again? Really…do you even understand the movie making industry at all?
A little bit of a good thing goes a long way. I wish they’d stop shoving Melissa McCarthy down our throats.
Jason Bateman never gets the credit he deserves…such an underrated comic actor. Can’t wait til Arrested Development comes back.
If I worked in an ER, I’d get ready for some throat injuries.
This is like the third trailer I’ve seen that uses a strike to the larynx for laughs.
On the flipside, it is a very reliable self-defense technique and doesn’t rely on physical strength.
Sorry, but I don’t understand all the fuss about Melissa McCarthy. If people think she’s funny, then our collective idea of what funny is has gone down the toilet.
Bateman is the funniest guy in the business. Can’t wait to see this.
I was wondering when Chris Farley was gonna make another movie…I’ve missed him.
