As it did last weekend, IATSE will picket against the Pac-12 Network beginning tomorrow. The union plans strike lines during basketball games at USC’s Galen Center and UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. Picketing is also scheduled at the University of Washington, Arizona State and UC Berkeley among others. Calling the network “an unfair employer” that uses non-union workers in union areas, IATSE began its action against the recently launched regional sports network December 7, and the union has had members out on lines at Pac-12 broadcasts ever since. Pac-12 Network said in a statement after IATSE declared the strike last week that it respects the right for workers to decide on union representation and intended to continue its practice of maintaining “an exciting and creative work environment.” The Pac-12 Network has contracts with Time Warner Cable, Comcast, Dish Network and Bright House Networks, among others, though it has yet to strike a carriage deal with DirecTV.

“Unfair Union” – Why must this union try to take over the jobs that students and others have been doing successfully for years? They don’t seem to care that many of us are paying our way through college with these jobs and don’t need or want their representation. Especially since if they get what they want, we’ll be forced out of these jobs. This should make everyone sick.
If you are employed by the employer, and they sign a union contract, you will be eligible to join the union. Congratulations! You may find that could be useful when you need to find a job out of college that can provide a fair wage, health benefits and a pension. If that is not your career path than don’t sweat it because you were a transient employee to begin with. If it is your career path , then you will have crossed a major hurdle to access more union work after graduation.
I’ve worked PAC-12 events when they were with Fox Sports (Union Hired). Not one paying position was held by a student. Students had opportunities to intern (the same way I entered the business a decade ago). That said, I have also worked under the current PAC-12 Network and have no problem with students learning on the job from professionals (a student or an individual new to the business had an opportunity to study a camera position – for instance). “Why must this union try to take over the jobs that students and others have been doing successfully for years?
(Cont…)…is simply a bad statement. The Union is not taking jobs from students… It sucks to lose work, but I have NO intention to cross the line. I advise “student” to really consider the big picture: PAC 12 wants Quality work with Sub-Par pay and benefits (and is willing to exploit students in the process). If and when you get into the business, I’m sure you’ll understand this!
I beleave you are right we union workers should back off as we are by not crossing the picket this way you can watch if you can tolerate it armature student tv coverage and those who injoy real tv tune into the nfl MBA MLB where real pros perform. Get the or should I say you don’t get the picture
For those of you trying to get your foot in the door, crossing a picket line is not the way to do it. Pay your dues like the rest of us have. By crossing the line and taking the work, you are undermining all of the work we have done to establish fair wages and working conditions. As for those of you that are choosing to travel in from other markets to work a PAC 12 event on the west coast, you will be known as a scab.
I have been working freelance in the bay area for 20 years and have tried to join the local union on a few different occasions and never received a positive response. I believe if the Pac12 Network gives into the union pressure, then people like me that are qualified to do the job will not get an opportunity to join the union and it will be the same 30 or so union dudes that get all the video gigs around here. So tell me way I shouldn’t cross a picket line?
