BREAKING: The Film Society Of Lincoln Center has postponed tonight’s fundraiser revolving around a premiere screening of Jack Reacher, which would have featured its cast including Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie in attendance. This is being done out of deference to the massacre that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut that took the lives of 27, the majority of them small children. This follows a Paramount decision to push last weekend’s premiere scheduled to be held in Pittsburgh, PA, an event that will take this Wednesday.
I’m told that the postponement was undertaken with the feeling it is inappropriate to hold a celebration while the country is in mourning, and not because of the film’s violent subject matter. Cruise’s title character is an ex-military cop who investigates what seems like an indiscriminate shooting by a sniper who guns down five people in a public place. The film is based on Lee Child’s One Shot, written in 2006, but recent events make the timing incredibly awkward. Paramount supported the decision made this afternoon by Lincoln Center brass.
“We support Lincoln Center and their decision to postpone their fundraiser this evening,” Paramount said in a statement. “On Wednesday, Tom Cruise will be traveling to Pittsburgh to screen the film for fans in the city that so graciously hosted the production of the film. There will be no red carpet during this time and mourning. The filmmakers and Tom Cruise convey their heartfelt sadness and their deep condolences to the families during this time.”

They should go further and give a percent of the profits to Newtown. All violent movies and video games should give money to the victims of gun violence. It’s proven that they contribute to the problem that’s what people believe so let’s see the studios give away money instead of just cancelling screenings. You can see where this will lead. We are going to have politicians from both parties try to ban R-rated movies and games.
Democrats are not going to try and ban R-rated movies or violent video games; they’re too far in bed with Hollywood and the entertainment industry at large to try any such thing. When was the last time a Democrat was successful at (or even attempted) taking on a social, moral cause that went squarely up against the entertainment industry? 1985. Tipper Gore. Music industry. Lobbied for music albums to have ratings and/or advisory warnings based on content. I don’t think a Democrat, or a Democrat’s spouse, has attempted to go up against the entertainment bloc since.
And all of these tweets from celebrities about the shooting in Newtown…the “moment of silence” on Survivor’s reunion show or at the beginning of all these NFL games….is just the public seeking permission to have a good time again and not feel bad about moving on with their lives. Newtown will, regrettably, be forgotten by January 1st.
No intelligent person, regardless of political orientation, is going to ban R-rated movies or violent video games.
Because it is stupid.
Don’t make this a political issue.
Although I agree with your sentiment on the last paragraph. The moment of silence bit is incredibly contrived and a marketing tool.
And republicans are too far in bed with the NRA, your point?
That’s a very cynical thing to say.
Shouldn’t the arms manufacturers donate some of their profits too? Or are we just blaming Hollywood now.
Gun stores still selling guns, however.
I don’t like where this is headed.
Think this is getting a little out of hand? They should have just held the dumb thing, but turned it into a charity drive for the victim’s families.
But hey, that’s Hollywood: why do an actual good deed when you can just have the appearance of such?
You don’t think a fundraiser for gunshot victims, celebrating a movie focusing on indiscriminate killing, might have been just the tiniest in bad taste?
Really?
thanks for being sane.
Banning rated R films may sound good, but it won’t stop any criminal from doing what he wants to do, AND it is censorship– it will never happen.
This country has a history of glorifying violence that predates movies and TV. If you want to ban Anything, ban the news coverage of these events who glorify the madman by giving his name and constantly showing his pathetic face on an endless loop.
I agree. Stop glorifying those crazy shooters. Give his name and show face once. So people would know. And then all media should stop telling about his childhood, stop showing his pictures 10 times a day. Ignore him. Call him “shooter”. And show shadow picture. They do it for publicity. They want to be remembered, they want people to talk about them, write articles, books, do movies…
Take all that away from them and it won’t be such fun for them to do it. Call them “shooter” and don’t show their pictures. They would not want to shoot again if nobody will know it was them.
Is it just me or does this sound like Paramount is trying to milk a horrible tradgedy, for some publicity for their movie that allready has a number of early viewers saying is horrible.
I hope I am wrong but it really feels that way,
Now I realize tonights screening was called off by the Lincoln Center, but the “Premiere” over the weekend was called off by the studio and that to me just felt very much like a PR Firms attempt to get Paramount and Tom some good press for a film thats not going to do very well.
Again hope I am wrong about that though.
How does it sound like the studio is milking anything? The film is getting good word and it is about a sniper killing innocent people. You are wrong as you said and hoped you were.
