EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, which made one of the splashiest deals at the last Toronto Film Festival in acquiring U.S. distribution rights to the Kristen Wiig-Annette Bening-starrer Imogene, has set the film for a July 19 nationwide release. They’ve also changed the film’s title to the catchier Girl Most Likely.
When it was bought, I remember thinking that Imogene was an awful title, unless the film was a biopic of Imogene Coca, and I wouldn’t go see that movie anyway. The new title is a clever reference to Wiig’s character, a one-time playwright-to-watch who unfortunately has saved her most dramatic moments for her trainwreck of a life. A crisis of confidence stunts her professional momentum and when her boyfriend dumps her, she fakes a suicide attempt. She thinks he’ll be sympathetic and take her back. Instead, she’s consigned to return home to Jersey to live with her estranged gambling addict batshit crazy mother (Bening). Matt Dillon, Christopher Fitzgerald, and Darren Criss also star, and American Splendor‘s Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer directed from Michelle Morgan’s script. Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler, Alix Madigan-Yorkin and Mark Amin produced it.
The film is right now being contemplated as a theatrical release, though Lionsgate and Roadside have previously done well with multi-platform releases Arbitrage, Friends With Kids and Margin Call. The film’s premise is probably too dark to expect a replay of Bridesmaids, but Wiig, sorely missed on Saturday Night Live this season, is certainly an actress worth watching.

I hope it’s a wide release. I’m excited for it. I love Wiig.
Friends With Kids wasn’t a multi-platform release though. Just theatrical. Arbitrage and Margin Call were though.
Why wouldn’t you see a biopic of Imogene Coca? Her relationship with Sid Caesar in the fifties would be a hoot.
I am looking forward to seeing this film because of Darren and also Kristen. I hope it will be a hit with audiences.
Christ this sounds awful. When are we going to stop entertaining the idea that Kristen Wiig is either funny or talented?
Trainwreck of a life? Bridesmaids. Crisis of confidence? Bridesmaids. Stalled career? Bridesmaids. No boyfriend? Bridesmaids. Moves back in with mom? Bridesmaids. I’m sorry, this reminds me of another Kristen Wiig movie that I’ve already paid to see… Can’t quite put my finger on it though. Hmm.
This movie was not beloved, when it premiered at TIFF.
I saw the movie at tiff and I liked it a lot. There is the ocasional scene where there might have been one joke to many but its a small detail in the large scheme of things. It’s clever, funny and there is great on screen chemistry.
I’m not sure how much I like the title “Girl Most Likely”, although I might just be attached to “Imogene”.
I’m only gonna watch this because I know anything that has to do with Darren Criss will be amazing <3
Finally someone with the right idea!! And also, if she’s going to date Darren, how does she have a trainwreck life???? Hmmm.
We screened this back in October, and I was wondering what happened to it. The audience loved it, though it did look like it could use a little editing. The title needed to change, and I think this is better! Matt Dillon was hysterical and everyone was fully in love with Christopher Fitzgerald. Wiig is herself, as always, which you will love or hate. I love her.
Kristen Wiig playing Kristen Wiig. Like to see her do something different.
