UPDATE: Shawn Ryan, who, like Kurt Sutter, also got his big break on FX with The Shield, also took to Twitter to criticize AMC over showrunner Glen Mazzara’s departure from The Walking Dead. “AMC, WTF? Common knowledge that AMC cut Breaking Bad shorter than it should have been. Now you have creative differences w/ biggest hit’s savior? With FX, Showtime, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, A&E, TNT and others to sell to, it’s a real question now why good show runners should sell to AMC?”

PREVIOUS: Sons Of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter has never been hesitant to tell people how he really feels and today he really let AMC have it over showrunner Glen Mazzara leaving The Walking Dead. Taking to Twitter on Friday, Sutter called the network executives “small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of its creative personnel.” He also warned that without Mazzara at the helm the “future is dim” for The Walking Dead – and that’s the nice stuff. Read all of what Sutter had to say:
AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of its creative personnel. Time and time again we see events like what
happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, shit on their audience and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was “Walking Dead” and turned it into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim. Showrunners are not development executives, we’re not cookiecutter douchebags that you plug into a preexisting model. TWD will suffer. Even Zombies need consistency. “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” will be gone soon. So will AMC. I hope their f*cking stock takes a dive and the shareholders line up (Josh) Sapan, (Charles) Dolan and (Charlie) Collier and shit in their open hands. C*nts.
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

“small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of it’s creative personnel.”
Some network execs might consider that a compliment.
an the award goes too… best most honest defend of a creative person, and glen is worth every word. love glen. Crash was awesome, and so will be hes next gig, and the one after and so on and so on…
Nice use of “it’s,” Otto. Otherwise, very funny.
Kurt, why did you treat Tory Kittles like a cookie cutter actor on Sons of Anarchy? Hypocrite much? Killing off a great character who you told would be a major part of the storyline this past season? Huge arc to die in season opener? Not ok.
Spot on.
Why why why would AMC do this?????????? stupid move AMC!!!!
It’s always the cookiecutter douchebags who don’t see that they are cookiecutter douchebags…
In an industry that favors carefully worded statements about “exploring other opportunities” and “best wishes,” that statement from Kurt Sutter stands in a class by itself.
BTW, best wishes to Glen Mazzara who, with his track record, will actually have other opportunities to explore.
I love SOA. But Kurt Sutter obviously has anger issues.
Yeah. Angry messages on a personal website definitely signals anger issues.
Sons of Anarchy is one of the worst shows on TV. Season 3 where the MC skips town and heads to Ireland is hilariously bad. It’s funny that Kurt Sutter has turned a motorcycle gang into drama queens. Don’t really care for his opinion, seeing how his work isn’t very good.
Would love to hear what you think is great television. Even The Sopranos and The Wire had clunker seasons. Don’t think I’m saying SOA is in the same caliber, but I think it’s still one of the better shows on TV. So, JAR, what’s better?
You’re not saying Sons of Anarchy is of the same caliber and yet you referenced it with The Sopranos and The Wire. Sure thing … and which clunker seasons are those again? So, CAS, why is SOA better than the rest again…
Sons of Anarchy is still on the air?
an honest sentiment with a signature. new respect for k sutter. who will be the new AMC…
Preach on Kurt.
Cookie cutter Douchebags everywhere are secretly plotting to take down at least one creative dynamo right now in passive aggressive reaction to this affront.
Let’s see now……AMC is getting rid of someone who shepherd the success of a good story because they didn’t agree with its popularity? What drugs are they on?
I Love Glen Mazzara. I produced CRASH for him for a year. I would follow him into hell.
I love this guy. Keep it unfiltered, baby!
Guess Sutter must have a lifelong contract with FX. Has he “worked” with AMC?
Don’t know why the change – maybe it’s justified, maybe not. Just tired of people being tasteless in public forums.
My kind of bro.
I want to hire Sutter to write my obituary. He must promise to use the words douchebag and c*nt at least once.
Can all of us commenters here on this site work together to get the phrase ‘cookiecutter douchebags’ into the lexicon. I LOVE IT!
Talk about your non-sequiturs. But I’m in.
Quote of the day : “Even Zombies need consistency.”
Another website that I frequent broke the story of Mazzara and TWD earlier today. I commented that, if Kurt Sutter hears about it, he’ll fire off an expletive-infused rant and wrap it up by calling everyone at AMC “c*nts.” Ha!
I respect Glen for turning the show around, and making it interesting, but the dialog and performances have been incredibly mediocre over the course of 3 seasons. I’d like to see someone fix that.
I’m a huge fan of Kurt Sutter (The Shield and SOA) and a huge Walking Dead fan!!! Kurt has worked with Glen in the past and knows how incredible of a person Walking Dead is loosing and I agree I don’t see any good coming out of this departure!! I think Kurt needs to admitt his powerlessness, say the serenity prayer, and remember to turn this shit over!! This always makes me feel better!!!
I love that Kurt is a fan of TWD.
Same could have and was said when Darabont left – and today, TWD is the biggest show on basic cable. I respect Sutter’s sentiments and his willingness to stick his head out there for a fellow creative, but AMC went from a catalog movie channel to a network that has some of the very best shows on television, period. That wasn’t any single creative talent, but the network. It’s easy to trash network executives, but AMC’s management shouldn’t be the first target of primadonna creatives’ scorn.
The difference is that, under Darabont, The Walking Dead was just not very good. People tuned in for the zombie action and stayed DESPITE, not because of, the lousy dialogue and lame characterization. Mazzara turned the show around and made it actually GOOD, upping the action massively and keeping it moving at a decent pace.
AMC has also had disputes with several other showrunners. Rubicon had two different showrunners in ONE season; Gilligan nearly took Breaking Bad to another network; Weiner nearly quit Mad Men; the list goes on. Not only that, but AMC keeps picking fights with cable providers, including their incredibly inappropriate recent behavior towards Verizon FiOS subscribers, harassing them with screen-shrinking and screen-crawls during Walking Dead, threatening that Verizon was supposedly planning to drop the channel in a disgusting effort to rile up the fan base and get them to bother Verizon. AMC’s management has clearly shown that it is an immature bunch of children who stumbled across good fortune with three good shows — Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Walking Dead, but as long as they keep going in this nasty, pugilistic direction, they are headed for certain disaster.
Also they are STILL skimping in HD bandwidth. Worst-looking HD in the business!
No, no, no…
If people just tuned in for the “zombie action” and stayed despite lousy dialogue, those zombie dramas on CHILLER would be huge hits.
THE WALKING DEAD has been a drunken, random slog since Darabont was removed. There is no vision, no authenticity. It no longer feels real. Look at the survivors’ interactions with the three(!) “convicts.” Truly awful.
I love Kurt but you either can plug showrunners in or you can’t!
Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was “Walking Dead” and turned it into a viable TV show with a future.
Showrunners are … not cookiecutter douchebags that you plug into a preexisting model.
